Everyday objects with fascinating stories behind their designs

Have you ever wondered why there are small holes on lollipop sticks, or what’s the purpose of the drawer under your oven? In case you have, we’ll try to answer the questions of the stories behind everyday objects.

Hats with Pom-poms

Wikipedia Commons

These hats look fluffy and fashionable, and make a great addition to the overall winter outfit for many, but the truth is that they were first introduced by the French sailors back in the 18th century to protect their heads from the low ceilings below deck.

The hole on Lollipop sticks

When we were little kids, I remember using these sticks to whistle, so I was convinced until today that it was the reason why they are even there in the first place. But, other than providing joy for children, the hole’s purpose is to keep the candy fixed to the stem. Small part of the candy fills the holes and that keeps the lollipop more stable.

The patch on the backpacks

This patch, which is usually made of leather, is used for tying or hooking things on the back of your backpack. Like your shoes, maybe?

The little hole on the smartphones

The hole placed between the camera lens and the flash might be super tiny, but its function is big. Believe it or not, it’s a tiny microphone, but not an ordinary one. It’s a noise cancelling microphone, or a rear microphone which helps improve the quality of audio recordings.

Number 57 on ketchup bottles

Flickr/torbakhopper

This one is quite interesting indeed. “57 Varieties” used to be an advertising slogan for the H. J. Heinz Company. The number is believed to be the founder’s lucky number and is now on each ketchup bottle. However, according to what the company’s spokesperson told TODAY Food, it serves a function that can come in handy. “The sweet spot to tap on the Heinz bottle is the 57 on the neck. All you need to do is apply a firm tap where the bottle narrows, and the ketchup will come out easier.”

The “pocket” in your underwear

Did you know that the pocket in the crotch of women’s underwear is called the gusset? Although it does look like a pocket, it’s definitely not used for storing anything. No matter what material the panties are made of, this tiny part is almost always made of cotton and the reason why is to provide extra comfort and allow breathing. One side is not sewn because an extra seam on that spot would make things very uncomfortable.

The spaces between the toffee treats made of caramelized sugar or molasses along with butter are used to help you reach your favorite sweets easier. Just press your thumb and forefinger on two diagonal holes to push up the candy.

Metal brackets on shopping carts

Twitter/LifeHacks

Doing grocery shopping can be as exhausting as much as it can be fun. Now, if you have troubles with your products spilling from the bags, simply hang them on the metal brackets behind the child seat on a shopping cart, just like on the photo above.

Switch on rear-view mirror

Shutterstock

Someone was curious to learn what the purpose of the switch on their rear-view mirror was and took to the Internet community to find their answer. Quora users said “That little switch works like a dimmer switch. If you look at it on an angle you will see it’s not just a mirrored piece of glass. It actually has angled slats inside of it.” It means turning the mirror to anti-glare mode will protect the driver from being blinded by the headlights of a car behind.

The little arrow-like symbol on a car’s dashboard

Do you struggle to remember on which side of your car the tank is? You don’t have to be bothered with that any longer as it turns out that the arrow or the triangle placed near the gas gauge shows exactly that.

Spoon slot

The holes in the handles of utensils are perfect for hanging the pots and pans on the kitchen wall, but they serve another purpose as well. As it turns out, the holes can be used for holding ladles and spoons while cooking. The good thing? Your counter won’t get messy.

Bride-to-be skips engagement photos to share memorable moment with her dying father

Many girls believe that “even if they find their prince one day, their daddy will always be their king” and this is very true because fathers always have a special place in their daughter’s heart and life.

Becky Carey’s boyfriend popped the question and that made her the happiest girl out there. However, her joy was not complete because she knew that her loving father who was diagnosed with cancer wouldn’t probably make it for her wedding.

U.S. Air Force Colonel Timothy Carey fought against the disease as much as he could and prayed to see his daughter in white on her big day. Becky was determined to make his dream come true so instead of taking engagement photos with her fiance, she decided to spend the time with her father instead. The two danced and had the time of their life and the photos are there to always remind this girl of how lucky she was to be having such brave and caring father.

“We whispered to each other this was just practice,” Becky Carey told Good Morning America. “But I choked up at the end, realizing how important it was.”

The person behind the emotional photo-shoot, Bonnie Turner of Bonnie Turner Photography said how she felt blessed to witness such touching moments between a father and a daughter.

“Photos are everything you have when people are gone, it’s what we have to look back on to feel that person with us,” she said speaking to GMA.

Turner even started a GoFundMe page to help the bride-to-be with the expenses around the photography and the wedding which helped raise more than $8,000.

“I shared their heartfelt story on Facebook and so many of you have given a tremendous outpour of love. You all have asked to donate to her engagement photos and wedding expenses,” Turner wrote.

The incredible photo-shoot took place on Oct. 14, 2018, and Becky’s wedding was scheduled for September 2019. She was grateful she had the “just in case” dance with her daddy because he lost the battle with cancer on March 2019.

Becky’s wedding started with a video of her and her dad dancing. The guests were overflown with emotions and couldn’t contain their tears that kept rolling down their faces. The two danced to their favorite song, “Unchained Melody.”

“He fought cancer harder than anyone. He should have died at least seven times prior. I know he was holding on for me,” the bride said.

Throughout his career of 30 years, Becky’s father earned many honors and took part in many military missions. His life ended just four days after Becky’s engagement and she’s forever grateful he was part of it.

“I had been in chosen denial about how sick he was. We were able to talk and laugh,” Becky told Inside Edition.

“He started crying, so of course I started crying,” Becky recalled when she spoke of the day of their last dance. “It was sad. But it was also beautiful.”

Col. Carey passed away in his home.

“We found him at 7:30 in the morning,” his daughter said of finding him in the exact position he had been in when they tucked him in the night before. “He didn’t move. I think it was very peaceful.”

This touching “just in case” dance will make you call your dad and tell him how much you love him, of course in case you are among those lucky ones who still have their ‘king’ in their life.

Boy bullied for being overweight has the last laugh after dropping 184 pounds

Bullying can take place anywhere and can affect anyone. However, bullying kids for their appearance is the most common reason of this type of harassment.

I am sure that you can think of someone who has gone through the ordeal of being mocked and made fun of because they were obese.

Sadly, young Ethan Taylor was one of those people. But his story isn’t a sad one. It has a happy ending and serves as an inspiration for anyone who has ever experienced bullying because of the way they look.

Ethan has been a chubby boy for as long as he can remember. However, his classmates thought it was enough reason to treat him with disrespect and make fun of him.

This affected his self-esteem but he never stopped excelling at the school subjects.

Although his high-school life was a tough one and affected his self-esteem because of the bullying he experienced, Ethan was able to attend the college he wanted because he was an excellent student. Unlike him, the bullies had to satisfy themselves with low paid jobs and a lost opportunity to graduate from college.

Well, if they were focused on studying instead of making other students’ life a living hell maybe they would have accomplished something.

Ethan moved places and was now miles away from his vicious classmates, but the effects of what he had gone through wouldn’t fade away.

That and being away from home in order to attend college made Ethan eat junk food and drink heavily. On top of that, he started skipping lessons and lost interest for studying.

In just a couple of months, he gained a lot of weight. As the pounds went up, his will to change things for the better went down. Ethan weighted 368 pounds at his heaviest.

Seeing that number was a turning point for this young man. Something clicked inside of him and that changed his life forever.

The New Year came with a new restitution. To lose half of what he weighted.

But was that possible? Even if the answer was yes, Ethan was well aware that accomplishing that goal would require total dedication and staying on track.

The first step towards his new life was joining the local gym.

Ethan’s work-out included running outside, too. He also ditched his old habit of eating fast food. Greens, fruit, and vegetables were now on the menu.

It was now time for braver decisions so Ethan decided to sign up for the Chicagoland Spring Half Marathon.

Luckily, Ethan wasn’t alone in the plan to become healthy. His family was there to support him and his brother worked-out with him every step of the way.

The marathon took place in May 2019 and was a huge success and an additional motivation for Ethan as he managed to finish it. In fact, he said that he loved it and wold definitely do it again.

Even though he reached his goal of shedding half of his weight, Ethan still makes sure to eat healthy. He doesn’t plan on going back to fast food i]or drinking ever again.

What’s most, Ethan didn’t only change his life for himself but for all those students who are victims of bullying because of their obesity.

He is now planning to run a full marathon and that way help raise money for the charity organization Action for Healthy Kids.

This young man’s dedication is such an inspiration.

5-year-old child with autism hugs classmate, causes criminal investigation

Even though things started moving forwards when it comes to acceptance of children with autism and their place in the society, there is still a lot that we need to learn about their needs and interests and how they perceive the world around them.

A 5-year-old boy named Nathan who has autism found himself in trouble only because he showed affection towards his classmates.

Despite his condition, Nathan has grown into a loving and caring boy. His guardian, Summery Putnam, has dedicated her life to teaching him the right values he should live by. Among the rest, she taught him to show appreciation whenever someone does something nice for him.

The thing is that Nathan does it by offering hugs and kisses. You may think that it’s very sweet of him to do that, but sadly, the school he attends, East Ridge Elementary, thinks differently.

Feeling the need to show them his love, Nathan would hug his classmates. But, instead of saying thank you or something, they made fun of him and complained that he was making them feel uncomfortable.

He couldn’t really understand why his friends laughed at him when he would offer his affection, so he wouldn’t stop hugging them even after the teacher and the rest of the staff told him not to do it any longer.

What the school did next was outrageous. Instead of reaching Summer regarding the ‘problem’ her son was causing, they filed a criminal report against Nathan with the State of Tennessee, labeling him a sexual predator.

When Summer heard of that, she was beyond angry. But no one cared to listen when she was telling them how Nathan had autism and was doing things differently,

Summer did her best to explain to her son how hugging his classmates was not allowed, although he couldn’t understand what was wrong in doing so.

Nathan’s grandma, Debi Amick, was shocked as well, so she decided to share her grandson’s story on Facebook, wondering how on Earth could a 5-year-old autistic boy be accused of sexual harassment.

Among the rest, she said, “He shouldn’t be treated like this. The kid doesn’t even understand what sex is.”

Only after his caring mom and grandma spoke up for little Nathan, the injustice was corrected.

The school admitted they had gone too far but justified their action of filing the report against Nathan by saying it was based on the school’s policy of reporting such cases to the Department of Child Services.

Thankfully, Nathan’s record that said he was a sexual predator was cleaned and he was enrolled into a special education class.

Sweet Nathan had to go through an ordeal only because he wanted to get along with his friends.

We honestly hope he would be able to forget this ‘incident’ and will show amazing performance at school.

We are glad he was given the chance to start over and be around new friends who understand him way better than those who hated his innocent hugs and kisses.

Rare white moose spotted taking a dip in a pond in Sweden

Planet Earth is the home of around 8.7 million species, and humans have only managed to identify 1.6 million of them. All of these creatures who inhabit this world are special in their own way. However, some are a bit more exceptional than others, just like the white moose captured on a video in Sweden.

It is believed that this part of the Scandinavian country is a home to around 100 moose of this kind. And although one would assume their pure white color is a result of albinism, the reality is that these unique creatures lack a gene, one known as the Armstrong White Gene Strain.

YouTube: The Dodo

The video was taken in the Southwest Sweden in the Värmland region by explorer Hans Nilsson who said he had been waiting for such encounter for many years.

The gorgeous animal is seen taking a dip in a pond and then munching on some three leaves.

Speaking to Sweden’s Sveriges Radio, Nilsson described the experience “as great as seeing a leopard in Africa.” Knowing leopards are endangered species and are rarely spotted by humans nowadays, we do understand how special this encounter was for Nilsson, as well as to those who have seen his footage.

Shelter pup saved by a firefighter is overjoyed to see her rescuer again

Some time ago, Sacramento firefighter Mike Thawley rescued a puppy that was on the verge of death. The poor animal was abused and scared and prayed for someone to hear her cries for help. Mike was on the job at the time he heard the noises the puppy was making, but had to answer a call and just passed by. However, when his shift was over, he couldn’t help but think of the animal that was in need of some help, so he got back.

Source: Sacramento Fire Department, Facebook

The pup was a severely neglected Pit Bull whose owners tied her to a tree in the pouring rain.

Mike could tell she suffered from a skin infection as her whole body was covered in mange and open wounds.

This amazing firefighter named the dog “Chunkie” and before he brought her to the Front Street Animal Shelter, he took her home and gave her a nice bath. Mike knew Chunkie was in safe hands, but he somehow couldn’t stop thinking about her.

Source: Sacramento Fire Department, Facebook

So, the following day, the first thing Mike did was visit the shelter and see how Chunkie spent her first night at the shelter.

When he saw her, his heart melted. Chunkie wore a cute pink sweeter and was way happier than the previous day. She recognized him the moment she saw him and rushed to say hi.

Source: Sacramento Fire Department, Facebook

He knew he did the right thing taking her at this shelter as the staff there is very loving and welcoming. Chunkie could feel she got a second chance at life and won’t stop fighting until she’s completely healthy again.

As for Mike, he is considering offering Chunkie a place to stay, and even adopting her.

We know that if that happens, this pup will be the happiest pup on Earth.

Couple from India become first time parents after welcoming their child in their seventies, making the mother the oldest to give birth

Most couples dream of having a baby. However, the sad thing is that sometimes, this wish doesn’t turn into a reality because of different reasons. When that is the case, some opt for adoption, others accept that they will never be parents, and some, like a woman named Daljinder and her husband, never stop trying.

This couple from India was dubbed the oldest couple to ever welcome a first child. Believe it or not, when Daljinder gave birth to son Arman back in 2016, she was 72 years old.

Source: Truly Youtube/Screenshot

The new parents said that the arrival of Arman was the best thing that has ever happened to them. And although they don’t know what future will hold for them and their son, they never regretted the decision to have a baby, even at that age.

Daljinder and husband Mohinder, who was 79 when he became a father, have been married for over 50 years.

It was back in 2014 when they turned to the medicine in order to be able to become a mom and a dad. The doctors were hesitant whether the couple could conceive, but after numerous tests, it was determined that Daljinder was completely healthy and that she could carry a baby, so they underwent an IVF treatment. The procedure cost 1 million rupees, or around $10,000.

Source: Truly Youtube/Screenshot

“We cannot thank God and our doctor enough for blessing us with a baby boy,” the happy mother said. She even breastfed her son and said how many media were interested to pick up their story so they felt like their bundle of joy was sort of a celebrity.

And while the parents are overjoyed and thank God for their new life roles, people say they are selfish. “This is just sad because most likely the child will be young when his parents pass away,” one person wrote. “They seem nice, but this is incredibly selfish on their part. They should have ADOPTED 47 yrs ago,” another person added. However, there are also those who say that Daljinder and Mohinder’s story gives hopes to other couples who struggle to become parents themselves.

You can take a look at their story in the video below and don’t forget to share it with your friends.

Baby Cockatoo jumps in excitement seeing dad gets home from work

We always speak of cats and dogs as of the perfect pets one can ever have because they are always willing to play and run around, but the truth is that every animal, including birds, can be awesome companions.

The sweet Cockatoo from the video below proves this to be right. Same as the four-legged pals who always wait for their owners to get back home, Cockatoo Onni is eagerly waiting to see his dad and is looking straight out of the window until he gets.

The moment dad’s car gets parked at the driveway, Onni gets so thrilled that he can’t wait to greet him and give him a kiss. Believe it or not, Onni rushes towards the stairs and screams in exhilaration.

Seeing baby Onni jumping in excitement has to be the best thing you’ll see all day.

Check the cute video below and tell us if you too own a pet that loves you this much.

Officer tells woman to pop trunk because brake light is out, doesn’t realize she’s recording him

When you’re stopped by the police, it doesn’t usually tend to be a great experience, if you have done something wrong or not, but most of the time its at least a little nerve-racking, your thinking ‘did I do something wrong at all?’

Chy-Niece was traveling to her job interview, then something happened to her and it made her feel dreadful. She saw the blue lights of the police and it wasn’t long before she realized they wanted her to pull up!

Her stress levels being that high were not good before her interview…

She was not driving too fast and she had used her signals correctly, so really, what could be wrong?

After she grabbed her license and registration she rolled down her window, what then happened is really spreading like fire through a forest, for all the best reasons right through the internet.

But the officer is not aggressive at all, Officer Jenkins explained that one of her brake lights was out, and this was stressful, she really didn’t need a fine and repair costs!

The officer instead of writing out a fine, he did something that she really couldn’t believe…

She wrote this on Facebook about what happened:

“So this happened just now. I’m on my way to go to my interview this morning when I get pulled. Both brake lights decided to go out this time. As he walked to the car and I was pulling out my stuff, he quickly said…”

“Don’t worry about pulling anything out. I just want you to know your brake lights are out”

“So I’m immediately upset because I just got them replaced last month. So I explained to him how Firestone wants to charge me $600 just to run a test on the wiring of the car.”

“He looked at me (like he knew this was crazy) and told me to pop the trunk…”

“He checked the lights in the trunk and tapped them, but they didn’t come on. So he told me to pop the hood to check the relay box then asked me to get out to check the other one.”

“He could have easily given me a ticket, but Officer Jenkins stepped out of officer role and into mechanic role to make sure I was straight.”

So with all the awful things happening in the world, it’s awesome to actually have a happy story to write about, with a happy ending.

To go that little extra and show a bit of humanity, and interpret the rule-book the kindest way possible with a huge handful of leeway, it really makes a difference to life!

A great big, thank you, Officer Jenkins, is well deserved, instead of ruining Chy-Niece’s day, he took the time to help her big style!

When she published the story on Facebook, it got 420k likes straight away, and nearly 100k shares too!!

This is without a doubt proof that we all love to read about acts of kindness and humanity between us all.

Disabled 13-year-old girl is left to die after her own mother pulled the plug on her and waited 6 hours before calling for help

When Kylie Larson from Minnesota was born, she experienced severe oxygen loss and that affected her health a great deal. The girl suffered from chronic respiratory issues her whole life and was wheelchair and oxygen machine bound. That meant Kylie, 13, was in need of round-the-clock care mostly provided to her by her mother Elise C. Nelson, nurses, and family members.

Despite her condition, everyone described the girl as sweet and happy. Her smile brought happiness to many and she enjoyed doing a lot of things, like being around her family, visiting places and going for boat rides, according to the obituary shared by Daniel Funeral Homes.

Source: Kylie Larson’s obituary on Daniel Funeral Homes

The life of Kylie ended in a horrific manner. Her oxygen supply was allegedly turned off by her own mother while the father was gone fishing and the two were alone in the house.

It was later determined that at the time the mother called 911 and said her daughter wasn’t breathing, the girl was already dead for around six hours. When paramedics and police arrived, Elise claimed she gave Kylie CPR but there was no response. The incident was later investigated further and it was discovered how the mother was tempering with the oxygen levels. When this happens, an alarm goes off, and it was determined how the alarm was switched off twice. After that, Elise turned off the machine completely.

“Kylie was blessed with amazing nurses who loved her so deeply and she became part of their hearts. Her fellow schoolmates looked forward to pushing her around in the halls and laughing with her. You saw her sweet soul and smile in her eyes. The simplest things in life would make her laugh. Kylie made all our lives better when she was around,” her obituary read.

Elsie was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. If found guilty she could be spending up to 40 years in prison.

Rest in peace Kilye, you were loved by many.

Incredible makeover takes years off woman

As we get older, there comes a time when we realize we’ve been wearing the same old hairstyle and those clothes bough years ago for way too long. And then out of the blue, something clicks in and we feel the urge to experience certain change. Whether it’s a new hair color, or getting rid of the old skirts, we know we have to fight the dullness that has somehow become part of our everyday.

Debbie, a woman in her late fifties, found herself in a situation like this and decided to do something about it. She needed to transform the way she looked, and hoped that it would also affect the way she feels. The answer? A drastic makeover!

If you ever had one, then you know what we are talking about. A haircut? New pair of boots you never dared wearing before? No matter what you opt for, undergoing a makeover is always welcome.

As for Debbie, you’ll never guess she is the same person.

YouTube

Of course, the person behind the magic is the prominent ‘Makeover Guy’ who has given “a new life” to a great number of individuals who weren’t satisfied with the way they looked. Christopher Hopkins, the man behind the miraculous transformations is a multi talented author, media personality, and a makeover artist who never ceases to stun us with what he does.

This fabulous man makes people’s dreams come true together with his crew of fashion advisers and hairstylists who are among the best in the country. The makeovers are done in the city of Minneapolis where people from every corner of the country come to experience and witness the end product of the process of “improvement.”

YouTube

Debbie admits she is fond of undergoing drastic changes, but putting her trust about her looks in the hands of someone else is what she had doubts about. However, when it comes to the Makeover Guy things are a bit different. She trusts him so much that she would dye her hair green if he said so. Luckily, he had other plans for lovely Debbie.

The most amazing thing about her transformation is that Chris achieves to harmonize her appearance with her vibrant and bubbly personality that definitely didn’t fit her grey and black hair and dark toned clothes.

He chose for Debbie’s hair strawberry blonde with highlights and swept away 10 years off her face.

Facebook/TheMakeoverGuy

Debbie is extremely satisfied with the way she looks after she has undergone the makeover and says she is eager to see her family’s reaction.

It’s a pity that we don’t get to see their jaws dropping when this beautiful lady appears in front of them.

The best part of all is that she now seems way happier and way more satisfied with herself.

Someone commented how they are “lost for words,” and we are too. This is definitely a must watch.

Surgeon obliges little boys solemn request before surgery

Ever since he was diagnosed with a brain cyst and a condition called hydrocephalus, now eight-year-old Jackson McKie didn’t have it easy. He spent most of his childhood in and out of the hospital. His parents have always been by his side, and he would often find comfort in his plush teddy bear.

However, there has been another person Jackson could rely on and that’s Dr. Daniel McNeely, a neurosurgeon who cared for and treated the boy all along.

What this kind-hearted surgeon did during the last operation Jackson undergone is beyond adorable.

Facebook/Rick McKie

Before the operation, Jackson asked the doctor if he could do something for him. He wanted the surgeon to operate on his teddy bear as well. Dr. McNeely didn’t hesitate a bit because he was aware that would mean a lot to the boy and it will encourage him to endure the whole thing knowing his plush friend is next to him during the procedure.

Twitter/P. Daniel McNeely

Dr. McNeely later told CTV News Atlantic: “I thought if there was something I could do to help make him feel better, it seemed like a simple gesture and I was only too happy to oblige.”

The nurses prepared the table for the teddy bear they called ‘Little Baby’ and the surgeon started stitching the toy. Thankfully, both procedures were successful.

Rick McKie, Jackson’s father, said what the doctor did for their son was simply amazing. Not only Dr. McNeely is one of the best surgeons, but he’s one kind-hearted and compassionate man.

“He’s one of the nicest human beings I’ve ever met.”

Now Jackson and his friend, the bear, both had stitches and they could go through the recovery process together as well. The doctor shared the story of the surgery on his Twitter account and it stole the hearts of millions of people.

“Patient asks if I can also fix teddy bear just before being put off to sleep … how could I say no?”

Twitter/P. Daniel McNeely

The doctor couldn’t imagine that his post will reach to so many people who praised his action and named him one of the most sympathetic surgeons.

“I thought it might make a few people smile, that was the only intention I had. I’m glad that others are enjoying it.”

We hope there are more people like Dr. McNeely who would do anything for the sake of their patients’ well-being.

Police is searching for a suspect after 49-year-old mother of four was shot dead while working at 7-Eleven

Police are looking for a suspect who committed a horrific crime on Thursday, October 1, after he attempted robbery at a 7-Eleven in Waldorf, Maryland, and shot dead the clerk, 49-year-old Lynn Marie Maher.

According to costumers who were inside the store at the time of the incident and witnessed the whole thing, the killer was a black man around 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10 tall and wore surgical mask, jeans, dark tennis shoes, and a hooded sweatshirt. He was said to had fled the place on foot and it is still unknown whether he used a car or not.

At the time Lynn was shot, she was reported to be compliant with the suspect, according to Charles County Police spokeswoman Diane Richardson.

Lynn was a mother of four. Her brother-in-law, Chris Maher, said how she and his brother were high school sweethearts who went separate ways but reconnected years after and were married for ten years.

According to him, Lynn loved her job at the store and even knew most of the customers by name. She was a kind-hearted person who had a black belt in Taekwondo and spent her free time teaching unprivileged children this martial art.

The victim’s children are between 17 and 25 years old. Maher said how one of her kids is a Marine based in California and is currently trying to make arrangements to get back home for his mother’s funeral.

Following the deadly shooting, 7-Eleven provided a statement, writing, “Our hearts are with the victim’s family. We are working with the local Franchisee to gather information and provide local law enforcement with any information helpful to their investigation. The store is currently closed while police complete their investigation.

The police is asking from the public to help track the killer down and call the station in case they have any information that could lead to his arrest.

They can call Det. J. Feldman at (301) 609-6474 or contact Charles County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.

“This is a very quiet area,” Richardson said. “It’s unusual that something like this happens. We think that the community obviously will be outraged, and again if anybody knows anything, we’re hoping that they’ll call.”

Charles County Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $2,500 and 7-Eleven is offering a reward up to $10,000 leading to the arrest of the suspect.

World War II veteran celebrates 100th birthday

Our veterans should be the most respected citizens and we should never miss a chance to thank them for their service and their sacrifice. That is why stories like that of Raymond Duncan, a veteran who turned 100 years old a few days ago, brings smile on my face and makes me extremely happy.

The birthday of Staff Sgt. Duncan from Oklahoma was celebrated by the whole community and a great number of people who gathered to wish him all the best.

Koco News

Duncan was a member of the 487th Bomb Group and led the largest Eighth Air Force mission of the war on December 24, 1944, which involved more than 2,000 bombers on airfields and communication sites in western Germany.

Speaking to the ABC News station Koko, Duncan spoke of that mission and said a day doesn’t pass by without him thinking of that day when his life and that of the fellow soldiers was spared after a bomb went off over their base a second too late.

“I was in World War II. My airplane led the largest air raid during World War II over Germany, Dec. 24, 1944,” the veteran said. “And I’ve been honored by three presidents for that service.”

Facebook

“When I came back and worked at Tinker Air Force Base for 27 years, I hear one of those engines fire and chills ran through me.”

Sadly, 235 group members didn’t make it back home and gave their life for the country. Their deed should never be forgotten. Duncan said how the soldiers didn’t really try to make friends while deployed because they never knew “who was coming back and who wasn’t.”

Duncan received many awards for his bravery, among which a Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct Ribbon.

Thank you Mr. Duncan for everything you’ve done for America. We wish you a very happy birthday and many more to come.

Great Dane asks owner for a sandwich bite in the most hilarious way possible

Of all the friends a human can ever have, dogs definitely are the most precious. These animals aren’t just friendly and loyal, but very intelligent too. They will always stay by your side and be your best companion during your best and worst days.

Well, the only time they won’t listen is when you are eating and not sharing your food with them. Those who own dogs are pretty well aware that eating around them without offering a bite or two is practically impossible, because even if you don’t do that, they will come and get what’s “theirs.”

The man from the video below is trying to enjoy his sandwich, but his Great Dane is sitting right in front of him and looking straight into his eyes. Once she realizes she isn’t getting any of the snack, she starts barking, and according to many, the sound resembles a lion’s roaring.

And as if having one gentle giant observing the man’s every chew isn’t enough, the two other dogs want their portion as well. The best thing is, they are only getting a bite after they say I love you.

The video has been seen over 7 million times. Check it out below and see the reason why!

Ellie, an 18-year-old model with Down syndrome, stars in Gucci’s new beauty campaign

Although the this world changes with only a gradual pace, people seem to finally understand that accepting the differences is what makes it a better place to live in.

In the past, fashion industries only featured flawless and good-looking models in magazines and on the runways, but as time passes by, they understand that one doesn’t have to be skinny and tall to be beautiful. As a result, famous fashion brands are now working with everyday people as their models and are embracing the differences.

Just take a look at Ellie Goldstein. This 18-year-old girl with Down Syndrome is one of the most famous Gucci models and not only people from her country of England know of her, but she’s gathering an international attention and thousands of followers on Instagram also.

Ellie was discovered when the company was looking for a model for their new makeup line campaign.

Just a glance at this lovely young lady was enough for Gucci to know she is just the person for them. After being chosen, she was part of the Gucci Beauty and Photo Vogue Festival.

The agency representing Ellie is the Zebedee Management agency which mainly represents models with special needs. ”Our models are beautiful! No ifs, no buts, no excuses. Talent and beauty don’t care how many legs you have or what condition you were born with,” their website says. The goal of this agency is “to redefine the perfection of beauty, disability and diversity.”

Ellie, who describes herself as “Passionate about drama, modelling & dance. Living life to the full & following my dreams,” has always wanted to be part of the fashion world, but little did she know this dream of hers would one day turn into reality.

Today, she is very successful at what she does and was even featured on the cover of the Glamour magazine in September of this year.

Her friends and family are extremely proud of Ellie’s success and say she totally deserves it because she worked hard for everything she has achieved so far.

“We’re all incredibly proud of Ellie and all the lovely comments she has had on Gucci’s Instagram,” her mom, Yvonne, told Channel5 News. “She has always loved being in the limelight and in front of the camera, she’s very confident and good at taking direction.”

Ellie is over the moon. “I really enjoyed the modelling and loved wearing the Gucci dress. I’m really proud of the photoshoot and would love to be famous. I’m looking forward to modelling for other brands,” she said.

Ellie’s story is inspirational and reminds us that we should never spot chasing our dreams. She’s now a role model of many young girls and boys who share her condition and teaches them that nothing is impossible.

Oklahoma police officer adopts the boy he saved from severe child abuse

Some people are so compassionate that their kind deeds restore our faith in humanity and remind us of how we should all strive to become better people whose kind actions would help the world go round.

Officer Jody Thompson from Oklahoma and his wife were already parents of three when a life-changing incident took place and the family ended up welcoming another family member in their home and in their hearts.

It was in 2015 when this police officer received a call of a case of child abuse. When he arrived at the scene, his heart broke because of the gruesome sight. A young boy was bound by his hands and feet with rope, shoved inside a trash barrel. His condition was so poor that his whole body was covered in bruises. The 8-year-old boy was starved so much that his ribs were showing. He was also forcefully held in the shower for very long time so he was soaked to the bone.

Inside Edition

This was the most severe case of child neglect and abuse this man has ever seen.

Thompson felt so sorry for this boy that he promised to be there for him and never let something like this happen to him ever again. The boy, John, was quickly rushed to the hospital, and during the whole time, Thompson never left his side.

Once the boy recovered from the injuries, his life tuned upside down in an instant. The Thompsons adopted him and surrounded him with all the love and kindness he deserved but never felt until that very moment.

Inside Edition

John Thompson is now an A-straight student and his parents are proud of him and everything he achieved. His new family helped him forget the ordeal he had to go through when he was living with his biological parents.

If you think the Thompsons are kind-hearted people who were there for John when he needed them the most, wait until you see what else they did. John’s biological mother gave birth to a baby daughter while in prison, and his new parents adopted his little sister too. Only 24 hours after she was born, this amazing family started the case to officially make her their daughter.

KFSM Fort Smith reported on the touching story. The interviewer asked Officer Thompson how did he know that he was looking at his future son:

“When I seen him…when I seen him in that house, I knew,” the officer said, tears welling up in his eyes.

Looking at John and officer Thompson, it’s obvious the two love and respect each other endlessly. No one would ever assume John was adopted. He has always been treated equally as the rest of the kids. John said of his father, “he’s [Officer Thompson] is the reason he’s here right now.”

We can never thank this family enough for providing two innocent souls with a loving home. If it wasn’t for officer Thompson and his wife who knows what would have happened to John. We are happy this sweet boy and his little sister got the life they deserve.

Woman enters the barn and spots an unlikely creature napping on her horse’s head

Oh, those unusual animal friendships! Have you ever seen anything better and more heartwarming than animals of different kinds hanging around and showing love to one another? I know I haven’t. These scenes aren’t just cute beyond words, but they teach us a lesson of respect that we should all learn and follow.

Nancy is a farm owner from Elk City, Oklahoma, and a huge animal lover. She enjoys being around the sweet creatures, especially the horses. Well, one day, when she went to check them at the horse stable, she came across what might be the sweetest sight ever. One of her horses, Rocky, had a visitor, his feathered friend, Chickaleta.

Now seeing the two hanging together is something common, but what caught Nancy’s attention and what she believed was worth sharing was the resting spot of the chicken.

As it turns out, Chickaleta fell asleep on her friend’s head, and seeing the photo of them made people wonder what animal found it’s comfort with Rocky.

The best part is the ending, when the chicken climbs off the horse’s head and stays next to him. It looks like they are hugging and we are all smiles.

This video is definitely something you don’t want to miss, so make sure you check it out below.

Sir Elton John spoke of the guilt after his ex-wife attempted suicide 3 days into their honeymoon

Just a single look at Sir Elton John and husband David Furnish will convince you that you are witnessing one of the best love stories in the world of celebrities. The two met some 27 years ago and are going strong as day one.

However, not many know that the famous musician was married before he came out as gay.

Back in 1984, John, who was openly speaking of being bisexual, got married to Renate Blauel. Speaking of the decision to tie the knot with her, John told Los Angeles Times, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly, “Even though I knew I was gay, I thought this woman was attractive and that being married would cure me of everything wrong in my life…”

During a 1976 interview with Rolling Stone, he said, “I’d rather fall in love with a woman eventually because I think a woman probably lasts much longer than a man.”

Blauel spoke of John too and dubbed him the nicest guy she had ever met.

Sadly, the two called it quits and divorced just four years later, and Blauel kept a low profile and stayed out of the spotlight. But just last year, she caught the attention of the public eye when she filed a lawsuit against John, asking for £3 million in damages after he spoke of their marriage publicly and published intimate details of their relationship in his book Me and the movie Rocketman, thus breached their divorce deal.

According to the legal papers filed at the High Court in London, while the couple was on their honeymoon in France, John told Blauel how their marriage wasn’t working and asked from her to return to London, which lead to her trying to take her own life. She recalled taking an overdose of Valium.

The Academy award-wining musician’s ex wife also claimed she suffered mental brakes after details of her marriage to John emerged.

In his memoir, John spoke of the regret and the guilt he felt for hurting his ex-wife. He even said he hoped the two would remain good friends and that she will meet his children one day. “I wanted her to be part of our lives, and us part of hers, in some way,” he wrote, according to The Independent. “But she didn’t want to and I didn’t push the issue. I have to respect how she feels.”

At the moment, the legal proceedings against Sir Elton John are still underway and we are eagerly waiting for the outcome.

11-year-old with terminal brain cancer asks for ‘patches and pins’ from law enforcement as his final wish

Life was unfair to 11-year-old John Francis Hoague-Rivette. This boy that was once vibrant and ran through life with a smile on his face was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer in May 2019.

His parents and family’s hearts were left broken. What started as mild symptoms and continued with inability to walk, talk, and eat, followed by frequent seizure-like episodes, turned to be grade 3 Glioma tumor on the brain stem.

After the numerous surgeries he had to go through, the doctors at the Albany Medical Center offered John Francis’ parents two choices; either let him stay at the hospital, or take him home and make him comfortable. They chose the latter.

Now, the smile on the boy’s face is mostly present when he receives coins, pins, and patches from the members of the police.

One day, John Francis’ teacher asked the local police department to pay the boy a visit and make his day as she knew how much he wanted to be a police officer one day. After the members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office stopped by his house and gave him the title of an honorary captain, John Francis’ family asked from other officers to send their son pitches and prayers.

Getting them cheers him up more than anything else.

“He grew up knowing that police, firemen, EMTs and military members were a part of something bigger than themselves,” Carrie Rivette, John’s mom, told Fox News. “He respects them and admired them.”

John Francis is familiar with the job of these people and love what they do for the society as many members of his family were part of the law enforcement.

The number of pins and patches is getting bigger by each passing day. Not only police officers from the town show their support by sending one, but officers from all over the country too.

In the meantime, John Francis is doing everything in his power to live his life the best he can.

Police officers showed once again why they have our trust and utmost respect. They are going an extra mile for the sake of the smile on this boy’s face.

If you are a police officer yourself, or you know someone who would like to contribute to John Francis’ happiness during his tough days, show them this story and let them know they can send their patch on the address below:

Captain John Francis Hoague-Rivette

Whitehall, NY 12887

Keep fighting little warrior, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

8-year-old boy slept next to his pregnant mother, not knowing she was dead

Domestic violence happens way more often than any of us can imagine. According to statistics, 1 in 4 women are likely to experience abuse by their intimate partner during their lifetime, and this is a devastating fact. Men are also victims of domestic violence.

The sad reality is that the abuse which takes place behind closed doors can easily escalate and result in killing.

Ashley M. Garcia was a mother of one, with her second baby on the way, when she suffered from the hands of her partner, 23-year-old Alexis Armando Rojas-Mendez. Neighbors saw the couple arguing at the parking lot and witnessed Rojas-Mendez forcefully pushing Ashley and her son into his Jeep on September 18. The following day, the mom was found dead in her apartment in block 5500 of De Soto Street, Houston.

Her son had no idea his mother was killed and went to her bedroom to sleep next to her. After Rojas-Mendez couldn’t stop the 8-year-old from going to his mom, he asked him not to wake her up, saying she was sound asleep. The poor boy listened to the killer and just slept in his dead mother’s arms. The following morning, he tried waking her up, but she didn’t respond. The scared boy alerted the neighbors who called the police.

Ashley was severely bitten and suffered brain trauma after Rojas-Mendez hit her on the head with his steel-toe work boots, according to People. The boy witnessed the horrific incident.

The family organized an intimate funeral and one of Ashley’s sisters said, “I have so many mixed emotions. I am sad, I am angry, I just want justice for her, that’s all I want, I want her to be at peace,” according to 2ClickHouston.

After leaving the place, the killer called his sisters and asked for money because as he told them, he had to take care of certain “out of town job.” The sisters, who spoke to People, said they could feel from his voice that he was in trouble and refused to help him.

Rojas-Mendez is charged with murder and is on the run. The police is urging anyone who has any information that could help lead to his arrest to come forward and contact the HPD Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.

Man sneaks up to a stranger’s door stealing his package, just 40 seconds in, he gets his payback

There are lots of people who just can’t wait for their online orders to appear on their doorstep. And then, after all the waiting, the package somehow ends up in the hands of thieves. No one really wants to experience this, but the fact is that it happens more often that you can imagine.

Now, if you think you can’t do anything to prevent these criminals from stealing your packages, just wait to see the revenge YouTube prankster Tom Mabe prepared for one of them. If you’ve ever heard of the saying “revenge is sweet” let us tell you that this one includes some dog poop.

Tom created a “bait box” that he filled with feces, and all he had to do was wait for the thief to take a notice of the box placed in front of his place.

When they saw someone driving back and forth the place in a suspicious manner, Tom and his crew knew some good laughing was just around the corner, or better said 40 seconds after the man in white touched the box. That’s how long it took for the package to explode.

This should teach him a lesson, don’t you think so?

The life of Lauren Tewes, who played Julie McCoy in The Love Boat – This is what she does today

We admire celebrity people, and often times, we wish we were in their place and be loved by the whole world. The truth is, being under the spotlight at all times is not that easy. Many people who are part of the entertainment industry struggle to cope with their fame and fortune and wrack their career instead of getting the most out of their celebrity status.

Actress Lauren Tewes experienced the pressure of being part of Hollywood herself.

After landing some minor roles in movies, Lauren had her breakthrough with the role of cruise director Julie McCoy in the series The Love Boat which aired for nine seasons, from 1976 until 1987.

Having been featured in a TV commercial for Lipton ice Tea, Lauren’s beauty caught the eye and the attention of many. Besides that, she got the opportunity to join the Actors Guild and could register with an agent. Lauren simply knew her place belonged in front of the camera, and getting the role of McCoy only confirmed what everyone knew, that this beautiful young lady would become America’s sweetheart.

Speaking of the time she auditioned for the role that changed her life, Lauren said there were over 100 actresses who wanted the job, but she ended up getting it.

She recalled the first day of shooting and how she worked as as a Sunset Strip waitress and told Entertainment Weekly, “I had to borrow money to get a new tire, because my ’62 Volkswagen Bug was not going to get to San Pedro. That first day, standing there in the little outfit, and I had to say, ‘Hi, welcome aboard, I’m Julie McCoy, your cruise director’ a gazillion times. But I kept screwing it up and saying, ‘Hi, welcome aboard, I’m Julie MacLeod…’ because I was talking to Gavin MacLeod and I was so excited.”

MacLeod, who played the role of the ship’s captain Merrill Stubing, got back to those days and said, “I tested with 11, 12 actresses that could’ve played Julie. It wasn’t what they wanted. They wanted a girl who exemplified today.”

Lauren made a name for herself and was considered one of the greatest actresses of the time. She got to visit beautiful places and be around some of the most famous actors.

Many of the scenes were shot on the cruise ships The Pacific Princess and Island Princess. The passengers played extras and the cruises doubled the ticket sales as everyone wanted to be part of the famous series and meet the cast.

Unfortunately, after few years on the show, Lauren started struggling with substance addiction and was let go of the series in 1984. According to her, until the show ended she was clean and overcame her issues.

A few years ago, she spoke of this chapter of her life on The Oprah Winfrey Network. ”I felt guilty, I felt shamed and humiliation and disgusted and disappointment, I knew that I had gotten myself into a situation I couldn’t get out of by myself,” she said. “I secretly begged and begged and begged for someone to help me. For me it was an issue with cocaine in the 1970’s and early 1980’s when it was a popular drug but if you ask anybody, I was the only one doing it in all of Hollywood. It was just me and nobody wanted to help me.”

After that, she continued her career in front of the camera and returned for a guest role on The Love Boat. In 1979 she appeared in Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders with Jane Seymour and two years later she starred in Eyes of a Stranger. In 2007, she acted as Karen Noone in “Prayer for My Enemy,” a play by Craig Lucas.

Lauren was married three times. She met her third husband, Robert Nadir, in 1993 while performing in an Arizona Theater Company play. They tied the knot in 1996, but in 2002, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ASL) and passed away in their home in Seattle at the age of 46.

This wasn’t the first time for Lauren to lose someone she loved. In 1987, she lost her 1-month-old daughter who was born prematurely.

Now, Lauren is 66 years old and is still acting every now and then. In 2017, she appeared in an episode of Twin Peaks and now works as a cheese steward and a sous chef following her completion of culinary arts studies.

Chilling footage shows cops doused in petrol while crowd shouts “Set them on fire!”

A shocking video from May 2019, recently featured in the documentary Critical Incident, shows then 28-year-old man named Justin Jackson dousing police officers in petrol after they try to arrest him. The incident, which was caught on tape from a police helicopter took place in Basildon, Essex.

The chase after Jackson started after he was spotted driving dangerously. Eight miles later, he was about to be arrested when he reached for a can filled with liquid. The officers were unaware of what was inside and were attacked with petrol moments later, according to Daily Mail.

Andrew Bird, one of the eight officers present at the scene, recalled the attack and said, “As I was trying to control a gentleman who had run out of the middle of nowhere this other chap has appeared with a watering can.”

PC Matthew Cutts realized what was going on and tried fighting the attacker. “I could smell petrol so I sort of fumbled around to get my baton out but once I’ve got it out I’ve put it behind my head and just struck him in line with my training,” he said. “It’s not a random act of violence, it’s a controlled measure that we are taught to use to get people away from us.”

As the officers were covered in petrol and panicking, they could hear the crowd gathered around them shouting, “who’s got matches, who’s got a lighter, let’s set them on fire, let’s light them up.”

As reported by Daily Mail, Chief Inspector Jonathan Baldwin said, “I don’t know how we didn’t just cut and run but then that’s not the way we’re wired – we all stuck together. There’s something running in the core of us that says you don’t run away from the danger, you run towards it. One match, one lighter, one spark could result in us going up in flames and being disfigured for life or possibly even dead.”

Luckily, a team of 90 officers were on their way to rescue their fellow colleagues and arrest the attacker. Jackson pleaded guilty after he appeared at the Basildon Crown Court and was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

The cops affected believed he deserved what he got and remembered thinking they wouldn’t get alive.

“At the time of the incident while being covered with petrol I remember thinking ‘we could all go up in flames here like Roman candles,'” CI Baldwin recalled. “It was one of those days I realized I might not have got home at all. This was in my view a calculated attack carried out without regard for the lives of police officers, their loved ones, and others who were nearby at the time.”

We are glad the cops didn’t get injured. You can take a look at the chilling incident in the video below.
