When Matthew Markham noticed the tag name of the cashier, Gregory, he knew he was at the right place.
He approached him and said he needed to talk to him about Linda.
Linda was Gregory’s daughter. After his wife left him because she believed he lacked ambition and was happy working as a cashier, Linda was everything Gregory had.
“Is she in some kind of trouble?” Gregory asked the man.
Matthew shook his head. “Do you have a few minutes, please?”
The two man set down for coffee, and deep down, Gregory knew what the conversation with the stranger would be about.
“Linda is adopted, right?” Matthew asked, and that’s when Gregory’s world turned upside down.
“Yes, she is, but she doesn’t know that, and you can’t tell her,” Gregory said.
It turned out Matthew was Linda’s biological father. Up until that moment, he didn’t even know she existed.
His girlfriend died at childbirth and he was told that the baby passed away, too — instead, it was given up for adoption.
Matthew didn’t want to disturb Linda’s life, he just wanted to know what she was like and whether her life turned good. But realizing how much Gregory loved her and cared for her, he felt like he had found the answer.
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell her anything, I just wanted to make sure she was safe and cared for.”
However, although he made a promise, Matthew needed to see Linda, so the following day, he pretended to be a homeless person and entered the store where she worked as a cashier, just like Gregory.
He took a few essential food items to her checkout and waited while she rang them up. “I’m sorry, Miss,” he said once she told him the cost. “I can’t afford all of that. I’ve only got ten dollars.”
Linda smiled at him and said, “Don’t worry about it, sir. I’ll cover the rest.”
Matthew smiled back, his heart full of joy at the woman his daughter had become.
A couple of days later, he visited the store once again, but this time, he wore his best suit.
He grabbed some items, headed to the checkout, and yelled, “Get out of the way,” pushing his way to the front of the queue.
“I’m in a hurry,” he yelled, wanting to see Linda’s reaction.
As polite as ever, she turned to him and said, “Mister, I don’t care who you are, every customer is equal, and you won’t be served unless you get to the end of the queue.”
This was yet another proof of how special Linda was.
It didn’t take long before Linda received a letter from her biological father’s lawyer. He gave her he business that was worth $3.8 million.
But that didn’t make any sense to this young lady who always worked hard for everything she had.
Once at the lawyer’s office, Gregory told her the truth. He confessed that she was adopted and told her about Matthew, that he came to visit him and wanted to learn everything about her.
Linda was overwhelmed. At first, she was mad Gregory hadn’t told her the truth before, but at the same time, she was thankful for everything he had done for her, and knew he always loved her unconditionally.
“You can meet your real father if you want to,” Gregory said to his daughter. “He is a good man and deserves to have you in his life.”
A couple of days later, when everything settled down, Linda made the decision to meet Matthew.
He never did her wrong because he never knew she existed. But he reached out the moment he learned he had a daughter.
While she continued living with her adoptive father, Matthew remained an important part of Linda’s life.
