I gave my coat to a woman in the cold—two weeks later, everything changed

If you’ve ever walked down Fifth Avenue at the tail end of winter, then you know precisely the kind of morning I am talking about. You likely remember the particular feeling of hopelessness that sets in on such mornings, when the city seems stripped bare of everything pleasant and good. Not a trace of snow anywhere, let alone any Christmas decorations, just gray concrete, gray slush, and a sky that resembles nothing so much as an old, ragged piece of wool. And the wind… it’s not just a gust; it’s a hunt, finding the smallest point where your scarf meets your chin.

I was doing what most of us do when we are overwhelmed by the situation, dwell on small, trivial matters so that we would not have to face the bigger and scarier ones. I was practically lecturing myself about how stupid it was for me to wear such thin socks, instead of the thick ones I should’ve picked. Then I made promises to myself that once I had received my bonus, I would invest in a proper coat because until then, I had no intention of spending money on anything fancy. These were the “safe” things that I told myself, which meant that I did not have to confess how exhausted I really was. I was already feeling drained before I had even reached the office and started working.

Well, that’s when I saw her, curled up in the space between the marble of our lobby and the sidewalk. Security guards generally run people off, but at such an early hour and in such freezing temperatures, I guess everyone was trying to stay indoors for warmth. She sat so close to the stone that it seemed as if she was trying to blend into it, as if by pressing herself further against the wall she might find traces of warmth from the building’s radiators. The woman was dressed in what I could only describe as a threadbare purple sweater, covered in the tiny balls of fluff that appear after multiple washes. She wasn’t even wearing a coat.

At that moment I acted like a true New Yorker and did the “polite ignore.” We all know what I mean by that. There you are, and there is a person right in front of you going through hell, and your mind just blocks them out. This is the way nature works, no? You would never get to work if you had to stop for everybody that is suffering. And I had certainly passed that girl by dozens of times over the week, but I didn’t even recognize that she was a living person.

However, as I approached her, the “pocket shuffle” kicked in. This is that unconscious reflex in which we search our pockets for anything and everything that we can offer so we do not look like a complete jerk. The old trick was well-rehearsed. I would give an appreciative nod and perhaps even a dollar if I had it, followed by a sympathetic half-smile, before disappearing into the comfort of the building’s lobby. However, all I could find was some pocket lint, a torn receipt from the bodega deli, and a gum wrapper.

When she spoke, it caught me off guard. Her voice wasn’t high or shaky or desperate. It was just… flat. Neutral. She asked if I had any spare change, but it didn’t sound like a plea. It sounded like she was just taking a poll, checking to see if kindness was still a thing that existed in the world, but not really expecting a “yes.”

I told her my standard line of “Sorry, I am tapped out” and headed towards the door. However, something made me pause. In fact, I did stop and look back at her. But, more importantly, I actually paid attention to her. It’s not because she looked cold. Instead, it was because of her face. She wasn’t looking down or looking into thin air. Her eyes were observing everything around her with such intensity.

At that moment, the gust of wind blew through the street, and it was like somebody had smacked me in the face with a piece of ice. I was bundled up in three layers and a scarf, but I still felt terrible. This woman had only a tattered sweater and a wall. It struck me that I would be okay. I would be indoors in thirty seconds. I would be at a heated bus stop shortly. A couple of minutes of freezing wouldn’t hurt me, but it seemed like she was about to die from the cold right now.

For some reason, I took an action that wasn’t part of the plan. I unzipped my coat. As soon as I took it off, the air seemed to have a certain weight, just pressing out all the warmth from my body. I refused to think about it because otherwise, I wouldn’t do it. I only held out my coat to her.

She didn’t snatch it from me. Instead, she just gazed at it as if it was some venomous snake that I was holding in front of her eyes. She was completely stunned. Finally, I had to bump her shoulder with it so that she took it and held it, but her fingers were literally cold like ice. She made me jump when she laid her hands on mine. And despite the fact that the coat hung below her wrists because it was far too large for her, it felt good.

She never said “thank you.” At least, not right away. She just smiled and it was an “I see you’re still alive” smile—not a “thank you for the coat” smile. Then she thrust something into my palm. It was a coin. Old, rusted, heavy. Like it would be in a museum or a 1920s junk drawer. And I wanted to give it back to her. But she shut my hand around it, and she had that look in her eye, that utter confidence, that made me know that it was mine now.

And that’s when the heavy glass doors slid open, and Mr. Harlan emerged. The thing is, at this point, you need to visualize what Mr. Harlan looks like to understand just how awful the next minute and a half became. Harlan is one of those men who seems like he was created in a factory specializing in making lobbyists look good. His charcoal suit is flawlessly cut, his hair hasn’t moved from wherever it was in 1994, and the man has such an inflated ego that it practically needs its own zip code. He saw me—the guy standing in front of him, shivering in just his dress shirt, berating a “loiterer,” and his face went purple.

There was no private conversation about the matter, he just began shouting. In Harlan’s book, I hadn’t just done something inappropriate or rude; I had made myself into a “liability” and a “bad look” for the firm’s image. He even mentioned having to navigate through “this kind of element,” as if the woman I gave my coat to was some sort of dangerous weather condition. Before I could explain anything about how my coat had ended up on her in the first place, he cut me off. “Clear your desk,” he said. “Effective immediately.”

He used those exact words as if he’d read them from some kind of corporate script he kept beneath his pillow. There was no discussion, no mention of a Human Resources meeting, none of the things you’d expect when firing an employee. He simply did it. And then, as if he’d just dealt with a minor annoyance, he walked inside.

There I was, standing outside in the wind as the glass doors closed on my career. I had just traded a 401k for a rusty coin and a $200 jacket. She, still wrapped in my oversized coat, apologized and said something that stuck with me: “You knew what you were doing.”

I left feeling like an utter fool. The next two weeks saw me doing “pasta math” while recruiters stayed silent on the phone. I froze in my apartment to save money, and constant anxiety became my only roommate. I was falling, and time was running out.

Fourteen days later, a small velvet box appeared on my front doorstep—no stamps, no return address. I retrieved the rusty coin from my junk drawer and slid it into a narrow slot on the side of the box. It clicked, opening to reveal a card: she wasn’t homeless at all, but a CEO testing who would really give something up.

But below that was an offer of employment with a salary that seemed like a typographical error. It was life-altering.

Within days, I was falling apart, but the new office was sleek, made of glass, and filled with expensive silence. I walked into the boardroom, and there she was—without her pilled sweater, dressed in a business suit, and with that same piercing stare. No long explanation was necessary. She understood how close I’d come to tossing the coin; I understood that she had saved my life.

On the fiftieth floor, I came to understand that by removing my suit jacket, I had not only done a good turn for a stranger but had prevented myself from turning into yet another empty suit like Harlan. I was finally warm. I think I’m going to enjoy this place.

Top 10 safest places in case World War 3 breaks out

If global tensions ever erupt into a full-scale warfare, one can’t help but wonder if there would be anywhere in the world safe enough to seek refuge. While the idea of a world war is frightening to say the least, it does raise a number of questions about geography and survival. In today’s climate, these concerns feel more relevant than ever. Following reports that Ali Khamenei was killed during large-scale US and Israeli strikes in late February 2026, the situation in the Middle East has intensified dramatically. The subsequent retaliation, particularly disruptions around critical global trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz, has underscored just how quickly regional conflict can escalate into a crisis with worldwide consequences.

Just this week, on April 7–8, a fragile two-week ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan, Time reported. Although this last-minute deal has put on hold the looming danger of “infrastructure demolition” as President Trump has dubbed it, the economy around the world continues to suffer because of the energy crisis. The best places to be at this stage would surely be those that are distant from military and economic centers, as well as from complicated alliances.

Truth is, however, that no place on Earth would be completely untouched by the effects of a possible global war.

Still, some locations are far better positioned than others to handle widespread instability. Research in geopolitics and disaster management often points to three key factors that can improve a region’s chances of staying secure during a crisis: distance from major conflict zones, political neutrality, and a strong level of economic self-sufficiency. Countries that combine these qualities are not only less likely to become direct targets, but are also better equipped to endure long-term disruption. With that in mind, here are ten places often considered safer options during a global conflict, along with the reasons behind their resilience.

1. New Zealand

Being situated in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is one of the most geographically isolated industrialized countries in the world, so it doesn’t come as a surprise it comes on the top of the list.

It is unlikely that any of its neighbors will engage in warfare against it, especially considering the fact that the two main conflict zones of the contemporary world are currently the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Also, its foreign policy is rather low-key, and it does not have any geopolitical rivals.

However, aside from its geographical isolation, the country has all the necessary conditions to be entirely independent. Indeed, New Zealand boasts an exceptionally productive agricultural industry, which allows it to produce vast amounts of food, while its power supply is based mainly on renewable sources, including hydropower plants and geothermal energy stations.

2. Switzerland

Switzerland has long been synonymous with neutrality. It has managed to stay uninvolved in any major war for well over two hundred years. The topography of Switzerland also contributes heavily to its defense, being surrounded on all sides by the Alpine mountains.

Furthermore, Switzerland boasts a very elaborate system of civil defense. It is also among the few nations with enough underground shelters for the population to withstand nuclear fallout. When coupled with its economic stability and local food production capabilities, it can be safely said that Switzerland is well-prepared to weather any storm.

3. Iceland

The reason why Iceland gets on this list is because it’s an island nation located in the North Atlantic Ocean, away from other continents that are highly populated and regions affected by war. It has no active military forces, and its relations with other nations are rather peaceful. Most importantly, Iceland uses renewable sources to generate all of its power needs, which come from geothermal sources and hydroelectric power stations. Having no military importance, Iceland is even less likely to become a target. In a world where oil supplies are currently being choked by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Iceland’s energy independence is a massive survival advantage.

4. Antarctica

Even if it cannot be considered a destination, Antarctica offers complete isolation. As it is stated by the Antarctic Treaty, the place is used for scientific purposes, while any military operations are banned there. There are no permanent residents in Antarctica, just rotating teams of scientists and support staff.

Its extreme climate makes survival challenging, requiring careful planning and logistical support. Nevertheless, because of its isolated nature, Antarctica lacks important strategic value, making it less likely to become the center of any confrontation. Though impractical for most individuals, it shows that complete isolation can bring about security.

5. Argentina

Being spatially remote from numerous centers of power around the world, especially those located in the northern hemisphere where most of the disputes have traditionally occurred, Argentina enjoys certain advantages.

Also, the country is a major agricultural producer, capable of feeding its population through domestic means. At the same time, it has significant natural resources and energy potential. The Andes Mountains form a natural barrier along its western border, adding a layer of protection. Research into global food security consistently points to countries like Argentina as being better positioned to withstand disruptions due to their agricultural capacity.

Pixabay

6. Ireland

Another country that fits this pattern is Ireland. It is not a part of NATO and maintains a long-held position of military neutrality. As it is located on the western edge of Europe, Ireland is not a focus of any potential conflicts in the region.

Ireland enjoys the advantage of having a peaceful political climate, availability of fresh water, and an operational agricultural economy. It is also engaged in global business but not in any military blocs, which makes it less vulnerable. In today’s tense climate, Ireland has continued to act as a peace advocate rather than taking part in any conflicts.

7. Canada

When it comes to larger countries, the one that stands out is Canada, more specifically its northern and interior areas. Being the second-largest country in terms of land area, Canada has vast stretches of sparsely populated areas that are far removed from major cities and potential military targets.

Also, these areas provide natural resources such as water, forested regions, and agricultural land. Though Canada is part of the NATO alliance—making some areas potentially a target for military actions—the vastness of its interior makes these regions difficult to target effectively.

Pixabay

8. The Pacific Island Nations

Island states in the Pacific like Tuvalu, Samoa, and Kiribati do not play a significant role in world geopolitics. The fact that these island nations are very remote means they are not likely to become targets during war situations.

Many of these islands rely on fishing and small-scale agriculture, which could sustain local populations. Nevertheless, due to their remoteness, some specialized healthcare facilities may not be available. In addition, it can be difficult for goods from outside to reach these areas. Thus, during a world war, these island nations would largely have to rely on themselves, which is both a risk and a form of protection.

9. Bhutan

Bhutan is a country located in the Himalayas that offers a rare combination of geography and political ideology. This tiny nation concentrates on ensuring the welfare of its citizens via the notion of Gross National Happiness, which stresses sustainability and community rather than swift industrialization.

The nation has been able to steer clear of international disputes and follows a prudent approach to foreign policy. Its mountainous terrain provides a natural barrier, making Bhutan less accessible. Bhutan’s reliance on agriculture and hydroelectric power helps shield it from the current global energy crisis.

Pixabay

10. Chile

Finally, an excellent example from South America is Chile. Situated on the west coast of the continent, it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, both serving as natural barriers. The country enjoys political stability as well as a diverse economy that includes agriculture, mining, and green energy production.

The southern regions of Chile, especially Patagonia, are highly isolated and sparsely inhabited. These areas could provide sanctuary during international unrest, as they are far removed from major conflict zones around the world.

Conclusion: What makes a place safe?

Various studies have found that several factors must be considered. For example, distance from military superpowers and critical assets reduces the likelihood of being attacked. Political neutrality helps a nation avoid involvement in conflicts. Access to sufficient food, water, and energy allows a country to survive independently if international supply chains fail, as is currently evident due to the maritime blockade. Finally, strong physical and social infrastructure is essential for maintaining stability during a crisis.

Ultimately, although it is impossible to predict exactly what future wars might look like, history and geopolitical analysis can help us make informed guesses. Isolated countries that are self-sufficient and politically neutral are generally safer. Still, it should be noted that no country is completely safe. Even remote nations remain vulnerable to the indirect effects of major conflicts, such as economic disruption, climate impacts, or large-scale migration.

Of course, it would be ideal if the current two-week ceasefire between the USA and Iran could evolve into a long-lasting peaceful relationship and prevent further war. Nevertheless, it is important to prepare for all possibilities. Understanding which countries are relatively safer can help individuals feel more prepared. While the ten countries listed above are not entirely risk-free, they represent some of the best options available today.

Turkish woman claims to be Donald Trump’s daughter, requests DNA test

A court in Ankara, Turkey, has formally rejected the paternity lawsuit filed by Necla Özmen, 55, who made a claim that she is US President Donald Trump’s biological daughter. Although the court stated that there were no “concrete evidence,” its ruling did not stop Özmen, who is taking her search for identity to the international stage.

Özmen, an Ankara resident, has spent her whole life knowing to be the biological daughter of Satı and Dursun Özmen. Her father Dursun passed away in 2009 without any hint of a family secret. According to Necla, however, her life changed drastically in 2017 after her mother Satı, who brought her up, supposedly revealed the truth of her birth while on her deathbed. The story Özmen shared is a complex one, which makes for fascinating reading. In 1970, as she says, Satı gave birth to a stillborn child at a hospital. At the same time, she continues, there was another woman, Sophia, a United States citizen, who was in the hospital. As Necla tells it, Sophia got pregnant through an illicit affair with Donald Trump, who was, according to her, then part of the NATO forces stationed in Turkey.

Allegedly, Sophia handed her child to Satı to raise Necla on her own.

The turning point for Necla came years later when she saw Donald Trump on the news. She recounts that Satı pointed to the screen and identified him as the man from the photograph Sophia had shown her decades earlier. This revelation sparked a nearly decade-long emotional journey that eventually led to the doors of the Ankara 27th Family Court.

Upon filing her case in September, Necla demanded a DNA test as well as legal recognition of paternity. Unfortunately for her, the Turkish judicial system appeared to be a barrier too high to overcome. Indeed, on October 10, the court rejected the case, arguing that the claim lacked “concrete evidence.”

The court noted that the issues with the case were “substantive rather than procedural.” From a legal perspective, this implied that there was no room for extending the period for submission of evidence, because there were no grounds at all to hold the trial, i.e., there was no evidence in terms of documents (e.g., travel documents, hospital reports, confirmed letters).

Despite the legal rejection, Necla has been vocal about her intentions. In emotional interviews with Turkish media outlets, including a televised appearance where she burst into tears, she has insisted that her motivation is not financial or political.

“I don’t know how accurate it is. I want to find out if he is my father,” she stated. “I don’t want to cause him any trouble, knowingly or unknowingly. I just want to know the truth. I can prove through a DNA test that he is my father, if he agrees.”

She refers to Trump as a “good father” to his other children and believes that had he known her, he would have embraced her into his fold. This case is not about suing a world leader; rather, she sees this as a journey for finding a part of herself that she lost along the way. She has gone on record addressing him as “my father” and requesting his help in finding herself.

However, Necla Özmen has not accepted the Turkish court’s decision as the final one. She has lodged an appeal in the Turkish appeals court, while at the same time taking further legal action in America. Collaborating with Turkish-American attorneys, she has sent her requests to the American Embassy, and it has been reported that she has even made efforts to lodge a case with a “competent American court.”

The double track approach indicates that she has a tough battle ahead of her. Although the Turkish court was concerned about the absence of evidence in her claims, Necla seems to be banking on the possibility that the American court could see her claim as an individual’s right to know their biological parents.

If her claim turn out to be true, the consequences are huge. She was born in 1970, which would make her the oldest daughter of Donald Trump, even preceding Donald Trump Jr.

It would mean the president has children with four different women, stretching back to a period of his life that has remained largely outside the public record.

Popular beliefs and interpretations: 6 zodiac signs likely to become rich after march 2026

Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova, or widely known as Baba Vanga, was a Bulgarian mystic whose prophecies are so accurate they are chilling and go far beyond the year we now live in.

Among the predictions she made was the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers, the same one believed to be also made by Nostradamus himself.

She also predicted the death of Princess Diana, the Chernobyl disaster, as well as her own death.

And now, with the new year just around the corner, many of her claims linked to the year 2026 started circulating, attracting the attention of many.

So what did the “Balkan Nostradamus” predicted for the year 2026?

One of the most dramatic claims the blind mystic made was that humanity may come into contact with extraterrestrial life, often interpreted as a massive craft approaching Earth in November 2026. Popular roundups link the prediction to discussions surrounding the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, suggesting unusual activity in the skies.

Another popular prediction linked to Baba Vanga says that in 2026, massive earthquakes, violent volcanic eruptions, and extreme weather could affect up to 8% of the planet’s land area, and while it lacks clear locations or dates, recent global disasters have helped it gain traction.

Baba Vanga is also said to have warned that the changes linked to 2026 would unfold gradually and would reveal themselves through subtle signs.

She described a shutting down of a long cycle of prosperity, notably one that started in the late 80s, and maintained that we’re already living out its endgame in escalating economic volatility, hobbled systems that were once taken for granted, and mass moves away from careers that offered lifelong certainty. Not collapse, but cleansing: these were the words used to describe such changes in the book Redemptive Communitarianism.

She had also named the meteoric rise of wealth in areas that had previously been dismissed as laughable. Emerging technologies, nontraditional platforms, and creative endeavors are starting to generate income in ways that would once have seemed implausible, which she described as a “first signal” of expanding abundance. Along with these external changes, she highlighted an internal one too, a growing feeling of dissatisfaction many people have with their current financial path and an instinctive draw toward change.

The essence of financial astrology lies in knowing how to time things right. And as we left March 2026 behind, there are some signs which are experiencing an alignment of hard work, strategizing, and luck, in their favor. Obviously, no astrologer can write you a check for your good luck or fortune, and wealth will not be guaranteed by simply relying on the positions of the stars. What will come in handy however are the opportunities presented through the current movement of the planets and Baba Vanga’s predictions, for a few particular signs.

It is important to understand that the coming prosperity is not about some sort of lottery winnings, nor the sudden rise to fame. The coming prosperity will be earned as a reward for perseverance, wise thinking and acting, and making decisions when necessary. Let us see what signs of the zodiac will benefit from the changes taking place after March 2026.

This period will signal a well-deserved watershed for those born in the sign of Capricorn. They have earned their reputation for legendary self-control by working tirelessly for decades, yet their efforts produce no immediate results. But once March 2026 ends, all this hard work begins to bear fruit. It may manifest in the form of leadership, career advancement, or even owning one’s own company. It is not about luck catching up with them, but simply a consequence of years of effort being acknowledged for what it really is. The net worth of a Capricorn will soar with intent and experience.

Taurus is likely to experience development through a combination of stability and good judgment. Being a sign that loves to be secure, a Taurus doesn’t really indulge in risky endeavors. After March 2026, the celestial conditions favor them in the sense that they can increase their wealth without being reckless. It could be through owning property, saving a lot of money, or accumulating assets in general. If a Taurus opts to venture beyond his or her limits but within reason, they stand to gain quite a bit from their ventures.

But Leo faces another kind of change—driven by visibility. Post-March 2026, Leos will be under the limelight, either in terms of a high-profile career move or an entrepreneurial pursuit. Leo’s charm is a force that pulls him towards experiences which not only inflate his ego but also put money in his pocket. The key to financial gain lies in gaining attention and respect; leadership positions and personal branding form the core of his journey. Rather than working hard in anonymity, Leo’s road to riches relies on stepping into the limelight.

The pursuit of prosperity by Scorpio is a lot more subtle but certainly no less dramatic. Scorpio is known for its ability to perform behind the scenes, and post-March 2026, the sign will become even better at understanding people and the market trends. Success can happen through smart business partnerships or investments that take time. Even if the process does not look glamorous initially, the ultimate outcome will be nothing short of revolutionary for Scorpio. This period in Scorpio’s life is all about playing the “long game” and knowing precisely when to act.

Innovation will become the golden key for Aquarius. As the revolutionaries of the zodiac signs, they succeed when they shake things up a little bit. Following March 2026, any sources of income associated with technology, digital media, or innovative business ideas should do well. It is not the path that everyone walks on; it is one of the paths less traveled by. But for those willing to venture out into this uncharted territory, there are new income opportunities that nobody else even knows about.

The road map for success of the Virgos is lined by precision. The way they think and how they work is their biggest strength. Once the post March 2026 period starts, all that translates into earning money for themselves. They can become good consultants, data analysts, and even management specialists, which will bring them money on a regular basis. For them, the concept of becoming successful means doing things perfectly and reliably.

Conclusion

Though these six astrological signs might have the “wind at their back” from March 2026 forward, it is important to note that astrology is akin to a weather forecast, rather than a predetermined script. Intentionality serves as the common denominator between the disciplined nature of Capricorn, the attention to detail of Leo, and the creativity of Aquarius. These three signs are not likely to discover money by sheer luck, but only when all of their hard work pays off.

This period represents the “slow burn” method to riches. For most people, this means receiving “green light after green light” in those places where they once had barriers. This isn’t about the universe giving you things without rhyme or reason; this is about the world finally giving you something in exchange for your unique strengths. This can mean “time wealth” or getting a job promotion.

In the end, the stars set the tempo, but you do the dancing. For these six star signs, after March 2026, the melody gets much easier to understand, but you must still get up on the dance floor. With cosmic timing and down-to-earth action, this period is not only a prediction but also a road map for your future.

A simple act of kindness that made a lasting difference

I can remember that day very well. There was nothing strange about the store itself; just the typical dull drone of fluorescent lighting that makes its way into such small stores. It was a typical supermarket where everything is packed in rows and covered in plastic, giving off a distinct sterile smell.

Everything seemed normal until I walked down to the baby department.

There I simply wanted to waste some time by browsing through the aisles, but suddenly something caught my attention. Not too far from me there was a woman, cradling a baby tightly as if protecting him from everybody in the store. But it was her expression that made me stop.

She did not seem to be shopping at all; she was only staring around at people who seemed completely out of place in such a setting. There was no hysterical scream of horror. You could tell she was carrying way more than just the baby.

I attempted to return to my shopping, yet the voice of my inner instinct persisted to ring inside of me. It is a feeling when your common sense screams at you to concentrate despite not caring much about other people’s affairs.

After several seconds, she started walking towards us. She was moving slow, like she was second-guessing every step.

“Excuse me,” she said, looking back and forth between me and my husband.

My husband, a typical guy, responded politely but cautiously to her inquiry. His response was brief, as men tend to be polite but also unwilling to engage in lengthy conversations.

But I had been watching more closely. Her hands were trembling as she straightened out the blanket of the baby. She was picking her words carefully. There was no matter of what she was saying, but rather it was the vibration of everything around us.

I interrupted before I thought better of it.

“It’s alright,” I said softly. “Take your time.”

She gazed at me right then, and in that moment, her “everything is okay” mask just broke down. No show at all, but just enough to realize how much she was going through.

The problem is that sometimes what someone needs isn’t a moral or a cure-all. What they really need to hear is that they are not invisible to the world around them.

I didn’t think too much about it. I didn’t do a psychological assessment of the situation. I simply heard what she had to say and when it seemed appropriate, I offered my assistance with something simple. I reached into my bag, I pulled out $200 and handed it to her, telling her to use it for baby formula and whatever else they needed. It felt like the right thing to do, even if it wasn’t something anyone else in the store would have noticed or cared about.

There were no other words exchanged, except her “thank you.” They echoed through the room like a huge load being lifted from her shoulders.

There was no exchange of pleasantries. No prolonged interaction to make the whole thing a little more memorable than it had been. There was only an odd silence between two people who barely knew each other. But the air somehow shifted.

My husband looked at me after she left.

“You don’t even know her,” he told me. He did not mean to insult me. “Sometimes, you have to be careful, you know?”

I understood what he meant. This world is crazy, and people are taking advantage of others. He did make a valid point.

However, all I could do was nod. “Yes, I do understand that, but sometimes, it’s just… you know.”

He had no other choice than to leave me alone with this one. For me, however, everything seemed alright because I was not guided by logic anymore.

Time passed by, and weeks later, the incident in the store was just something else that ended up being another memory.

But somehow, it was always there.

I began taking notice of people. How someone holds back from talking, that certain glimmer in a stranger’s eye because they were having a particularly terrible day. This realization showed me just how much we walk right on by and do not see anything.

Everyone has a story we know nothing about.

Pexels

This experience taught me that kindness does not have to be this grand gesture to mean something. More often than not, it is the smaller things that make all the difference.

A couple of months after the first experience, I was in another store in a completely different area. It was larger and busier. I had walked around for a while just getting a few things without really paying any mind.

As I stood at the counter, I looked up, and suddenly stopped dead in my tracks.

Recognition can be a strange thing; you get that feeling for just a second.

It was her.

She was at the register, hair tied back, in a uniform. She seemed entirely different from before; she seemed calm and sure of herself, and she was simply doing her job. She was talking to people and genuinely seemed like she enjoyed being where she was.

She took a little while to notice me.

However, when she did, everything changed about her face.

Her eyes got wide, and she smiled at me like I’d never seen anyone smile before.

“You,” she said. It almost seemed unbelievable.

“Hi,” I replied.

The sounds from the store momentarily fell away, just as they had the last time I saw her.

“I had hoped that I might see you again,” she said. She sounded much more assured than before. “Unfortunately, there were things I didn’t get to say that first time.”

I assured her it wasn’t a problem, but she would not let it go.

“Absolutely not,” she said. “It most certainly is.”

She glanced behind me in the line, leaning forward slightly.

“On that day, what happened… It was much more important to me than you can possibly imagine,” she said. “I was in a very tough place in my life, and I really wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I almost didn’t even ask for your help.”

I listened.

“And yet you didn’t turn away,” she continued. “You didn’t make me feel like a burden, and that meant a great deal to me at that time.”

“‘What was that?’” I asked.

“‘Hope,’” she replied.

The word hung there.

It seems that one encounter was enough to push her into seeking help, to begin looking for work, and to start putting everything in order again. Of course, that was not easy, but that first experience became the beginning.

“This small gesture,” she said, “was enough to believe that maybe hope was not impossible.”

I could not really respond.

To be honest, I never thought that such a simple action would make such an impact on another person’s life. After all, it was my decision, made in a store.

But now I understand that kindness does not always come with such loud signals. Sometimes, its influence on people is imperceptible.

That doesn’t mean it is not powerful, however.

“I am so glad you are feeling better,” I told her.

She looked genuinely happier and smiled once more. “I am too.”

After leaving the store, I felt… lighter. Not proud. Just realized. We underestimate the small things we do all the time. They think we have to do something big and impressive to make a difference. But most often, small things, unnoticed things, end up meaning the most.

That is one thing I try not to forget.

To take a few more seconds and truly pay attention to the person right in front of me. Because we all carry our burdens and worries around us. You just don’t realize it until you are looking into their eyes.

Sometimes, even a little bit of kindness goes a long way.

10 rude behaviors that might actually indicate high intelligence

It’s easy to write someone off as rude, arrogant, or just plain inconsiderate, but those snap judgments usually miss the real story. In most cases, what people view as ill-mannered behavior is just an outcome of a very active mind that doesn’t think in the same way as others. Not everyone who appears direct, inattentive, or impatient does it because they want to. In fact, most times, such people are just hard-wired in their own way, seeing the world through different lenses. People with a high level of intelligence are often unable to get along with societal conventions, and when one chooses to see clarity in everything, they are sure to be misinterpreted by others.

Actually, highly intelligent people don’t always follow social norms in the way others expect them to. Their internal hierarchy of needs often leans much more toward truth and precision than toward making sure everyone feels comfortable. As a result, their actions could be easily misunderstood as arrogant and condescending. Traits such as raw curiosity, single-mindedness, and extreme honesty may come off as abrasive during normal, day-to-day encounters. Although these behaviors can be quite irritating, they are also indicative of a level of insight, creativity, and depth of thought that is rarely found in those who strictly adhere to social niceties.

Indeed, you may find these traits in yourself or among those around you whom you hold dear. As soon as you adjust your point of view and do not seek to interpret such a behavior as being rude, the rudeness turns into a mere character trait instead of a flaw.

1. Interrupting During Conversations

While most take interrupting to be an obvious act of rudeness or taking control, in a fast-thinking individual, the goal is generally not dominance. For some, the mental processing occurs at such rapid speed that once the connection is made or the answer found, there arises an overwhelming compulsion to communicate it lest the idea disappear altogether. This is far from an attempt to shut down the other person; rather, it is the consequence of an over-enthusiastic mind keeping up with itself. While certainly irritating, the motivation behind this “irritating flaw” is typically not a lack of respect for the person speaking, but quite the opposite – engagement with the topic being discussed and an attempt to add fuel to the intellectual fire.

2. Correcting Others in Public

Correcting someone in public for making a mistake, whether it is a pronunciation or just a factual error, can feel like a personal slight or a display of intellectual superiority. However, for people who have highly developed analytical minds, correctness is not a matter of choice but rather a matter of morality. The last thing they wish to do is to publicly humiliate anyone; however, what makes them incapable of doing anything about it is the feeling of revulsion at the sight of inaccuracies floating in midair. It seems to be very insensitive and sometimes even pedantic behavior. However, for those people, the value of truth is much higher than their personal gain in terms of social well-being or creating any vibe.

3. Being Brutally Blunt

The people who forego any sort of formalities and go straight into things without beating around the bush often get termed as cold and cruel. They do not mean any harm by being like this; it’s just that they may prefer to be honest and save time rather than wasting it on social niceties. Rather than sugar-coating the message or going around a lot to make things difficult to understand for everyone else, they prefer to be as precise as possible so as to avoid any kind of misunderstanding. While they know that it may seem cruel to some, they don’t consider themselves to be mean; they see things differently. For them, the best way to honor somebody is by being completely truthful to them, for it sets a ground of trust where one always knows what the other person is thinking.

4. Showing Impatience with Small Talk

Impatience is generally considered a character flaw, yet at the same time, impatience can be seen as an indicator of someone whose mind is operating at a level much farther ahead than the present conversation. If someone is able to digest information quickly, then they will become frustrated during a discussion when it appears redundant, cyclic, and overly detailed. Their impatience does not come from a disregard for the other person; instead, it stems from their internal clock that measures the end goals, the solutions to the big questions, and the steps towards achievement. These people are not being dismissive; they simply need more substance. Recognizing this can help to understand them better.

5. Questioning Authority and Rules

However, challenging conventions or continually asking questions like “Why?” may make one appear hard-headed, rebellious, or even “holier than thou” in front of people who are above them. However, this is often not the case; more often than not, these people just have a mind of their own. Intelligent people often do not accept surface-level answers. Instead, they seek to find out what really lies beneath the answer to fully understand whether or not there is a logical basis for it. In cases where the rule being implemented is arbitrary or inefficient, intelligent people would instinctively try to challenge that rule and refine it to fit better.

6. Ignoring Social Formalities

Forgetting a “thank you,” not engaging in the obligatory conversation by the coffee machine, or not exchanging pleasantries can appear to be an insulting or a snubbish behavior. Nevertheless, when people become deeply engrossed in solving complicated issues or are engaged in creative endeavors, it can happen accidentally that such niceties escape their notice. All their cognitive processes are dedicated to addressing the issue at hand or pondering it; thus, there isn’t any “brain capacity” left for performing socially appropriate actions. It is not that they do not value other people; rather, at that moment, their mind is preoccupied with another priority.

7. Zoning Out During Conversations

When the person listening to you starts getting glazed-over eyes, the automatic response would be that he or she is tuning you out since they are not interested at all. However, more often than not, the thought processes going on in the mind are actually quite intensive. The individual may be thinking about how one point you raised relates to another five or even considering the future consequences that are bound to arise out of the discussion. He or she has not lost touch with reality but rather, has just become engrossed in processing information. Once they come back from their reverie, a valuable revelation usually awaits you.

8. Using “Unprofessional” Language

Swearing is commonly associated with people who possess limited vocabulary or lack self-discipline, particularly in a business context. However, recent linguistic research proposes quite an opposite conclusion. Individuals who swear tend to possess a larger vocabulary and employ such words in order to convey certain feelings and thoughts in a much more precise manner. To some extent, swearing is used to give extra weight or even add humor to a phrase that “polite” words cannot convey. Although such words may not be appropriate in all contexts, this certainly does not mean that individuals who resort to such language are less intelligent than others.

9. Ignoring Messages or Taking Days to Reply

A failure to respond promptly to messages or calls may be taken as highly insulting when instant responses are expected, yet intelligent people tend to ignore such expectations in order to preserve their flow state. When deeply immersed in a project or engaged in complex reasoning, they do not see interruptions as anything but an unwelcome intrusion into their thought processes. Instead of replying to multiple superficial messages, they prefer to concentrate on their current objective. It is not a personal attack on the person who sent the message but rather a way of setting boundaries in order to allow themselves to think properly.

10. Preferring Solitude Over Socializing

Declining invitations and skipping social events may make one appear rude and antisocial. However, for intelligent people, being in solitude helps them restore their energy since socializing takes quite a lot of brainpower, particularly if it involves performing in front of others. Solitude is used by them as an opportunity to meditate and process all the enormous quantity of information that they gather throughout the day. Excessive socializing might result in a person becoming “burnt out.” Solitude, therefore, is crucial in order not to lose energy and become productive. Although it might appear antisocial, such behavior demonstrates one’s awareness of himself/herself.

Conclusion

Once you strip away the façade, the difference between “rude” and “highly intelligent” becomes increasingly ambiguous. In most cases, these actions are simply reflections of a mind that prizes honesty, concentration, and productivity over anything else. While this certainly does not make the individual’s conduct less frustrating to cope with, it does reveal that their motives were nowhere near as sinister as we initially assumed. When we consider these quirks from another perspective, we can show some tolerance toward how people operate.

This simple bedtime habit could reduce risks of heart attack

Although it is common to assume that becoming healthier means making drastic changes, such as engaging in intense training or surviving off green juices, studies reveal that a key factor in longevity may be the time spent in the bedroom. In particular, this involves what one does in the final few minutes before going to sleep. As reported in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a small tweak to one’s bedtime ritual may lead to greater benefits than anyone assumes.

In an age where it is fashionable to lead an extreme lifestyle, studies show that a slight modification in one’s daily routine may make a world of difference in terms of improving one’s overall cardiovascular wellbeing. Instead of changing everything at once, a person needs only to increase their sleeping time by a little to lower their risks of having heart attacks or suffering from strokes.

In order to understand how such small behaviors impact cardiovascular diseases, a study was conducted where data on health and lifestyle behaviors of over 50,000 adults in the UK were collected over an eight-year period. As noted by the authors of the study, it is one of the more detailed researches exploring the role of behaviors rather than genetic or other medical interventions in cardiovascular disease risks.

Participants in this study weren’t only asked whether they slept well or not; rather, they were rated based on their diets, physical activity level, smoking habits, and alcohol intake. The outcomes were remarkable: people who lived a healthy life had a 57% less chance of having heart attacks and strokes than those who did not follow healthy behaviors. While this result alone is enough to validate some traditional medical advice, the aspect that surprised the researchers the most was the benefit that even slight improvements might bring.

Data showed that one does not have to become a “health saint” to get a huge return of investment. Perhaps, one of the most shocking revelations was that adding 11 minutes to your sleep routine each day, along with a couple of other minor tweaks, could decrease your risk of developing heart disease by 10 percent. On the surface, 11 minutes might seem like an insignificant amount of time, considering it is hardly enough to even glance through your social media feed or catch a quick video clip online, but over weeks, months, and years, this slight increase in rest contributes to meaningful physiological improvements.

Why such a small amount of time could matter? As the experts believe, the thing is that this particular time should be consistent rather than intense. It is important not to totally change your way of life at once but to introduce some new habits which you will be able to follow. At the same time, it should be mentioned that a drastic change is quite hard to implement and maintain for a long time.

Pexels

This was explained by Nicholas Koemel, the author of the study. He stressed that the cumulative influence of small changes can significantly improve people’s cardiovascular health. Instead of changing only one habit (for example, doing more physical exercises), it is better to introduce several new habits to different spheres of life.

Even a few extra minutes of sleep may be enough for regulating blood pressure and helping to minimize the stress hormones, which are present in our bodies due to the fight or flight response. Lack of sleep leads to higher production of cortisol, causing inflammation and stiffening of the arteries. Thus, by sleeping a bit longer, we allow our body to regain balance in its functioning.

The significance of sleep has been well understood in recent years. Previously, it was viewed as a factor inferior to diet and exercise; however, it is now established as an essential component of well-being. The American Heart Association has declared that sleep time is now part of their “Life’s Essential 8” criteria for measuring cardiovascular health. Adults should get 7 to 9 hours of sleep daily to ensure that their hearts remain in optimal shape.

As suggested by the AHA, failure to achieve the recommended number of hours of sleep increases the likelihood of suffering from hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and heart diseases. Sleep helps regulate numerous biological functions in the human body, such as metabolism and hormone secretion. Therefore, when these processes are not regulated correctly due to insufficient sleep, it creates a “perfect storm” for developing chronic conditions.

This notion is supported by a research conducted in 2019 and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, which states that people who had healthy sleeping habits were at a much lower risk of suffering from any cardiovascular disease. These scientists discovered some specific behaviors related to good sleeping practices, such as having a regular sleep pattern and never experiencing insomnia. It proves that sleep plays an essential role not only in recovery but also in disease prevention.

Another important reason why small extensions to sleep periods are so influential lies in the concept of a keystone habit. The difference between such a small change and big changes in your lifestyle is the lack of large time investments and costs that come along with big improvements in sleeping habits. As noted by behavioral psychologists, good sleep improves your productivity during daytime, thus, creating positive effects.

If you do not feel tired all the time, it will become easier for you to remain productive, choose healthy food options, and cope with stress instead of using cigarettes and alcohol. In addition, sleep becomes an important element from which the rest of the healthy habits will emerge. As stated by Emmanuel Stamatakis, who works at the University of Sydney, it is vital to think about useful and user-friendly strategies.

The second lesson learned from this research relates to the importance of making gradual changes. For instance, when someone feels less tired because they got enough sleep after an extended period, they tend to follow through. As suggested by the research, this results in a good loop when one behavior promotes another.

Nevertheless, although such conclusions are optimistic, specialists highlight the importance of realizing that sleep is not the only factor contributing to a person’s well-being. Although gaining several additional minutes of sleep per day contributes to good cardiac functioning, this change needs to be regarded within the context of a more comprehensive lifestyle choice.

The study does a remarkable job of arguing its point: your body doesn’t require a full-scale revolution to be able to heal itself; what it requires is just a bit of extra space to breathe. When you think of wellness as an either/or kind of situation, the hurdle to cross seems to be enormous. You are convinced that if you cannot dedicate one hour of your time to the gym and achieve the perfect eight-hour sleep, there is no point in trying at all. But this data disproves this belief known as the “perfectionist’s trap.”

As it turns out, even 11 extra minutes of sleep, combined with tiny improvements in your nutrition and physical activity can lower your heart disease risks by as much as 10%.

In the end, however, the results provide hope to those who feel like they need a break. While you cannot alter your genetics, nor can you leave a stressful work environment, what you can do is take 11 minutes for yourself. With today’s constant need to achieve, knowing that something as simple as being marginally better can lead to living longer and living healthier is indeed liberating. Healthier does not mean perfection, or becoming a “health saint”—it simply means you should strive to be a bit more well-rested than before.

What really shapes life after 80 (and why it’s not what most people think)

Reaching 80 is an impressive accomplishment, isn’t it? There is a unique gravity attached to the experience not only because of the number itself, but because of the amount of history which precedes it. If you stop to really look at it, reaching eighty means you have lived through more cultural, technological, and personal transformation than most people can even fathom. You are a living bridge between the past and the future, carrying decades of memories, faces that have come and gone, and hurdles that once felt insurmountable but were somehow cleared.

However, as you move closer to this moment in time—or as you observe others moving into this era—there is always one question that quietly and urgently rises to the forefront: How do you live after you reach that point?

This is something we see happening all around us; there are people who make it to their eighties and yet remain “electric”; they are sharp, full of curiosity, and have remained fully integrated within the community. However, there are also those who start fading away “much sooner than expected”; they lack energy and focus, and start withdrawing from those around them. And while we attribute such occurrences to “the luck of the draw” or genetics, science tells a different story altogether.

1. The quiet power of “ikigai”: why you need a reason to get up

Purpose, which cannot be detected by any blood test, is one such factor that is often disregarded. The concept of purpose in Japan, particularly in Okinawa, the “Blue Zone” of Japan where people live extremely long lives, is known as Ikigai, meaning “reason for being.”

Many people find themselves at a point in the eighties where they lose their structure. They are retired, their kids are grown up, and their deadlines, which once drove their days, are gone. At first, it seems like it’s all good because it means more time for themselves. However, the lack of motivation makes these people’s days blur into one another.

New findings from a recent study featured in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry (2025) indicated that higher sense of purpose could be considered a crucial protective element against cognitive deterioration. The study included more than 13,000 individuals who displayed fewer signs of cognitive dysfunction despite having a genetic predisposition toward it if they felt a greater sense of purpose.

How to find it:

Purpose at 80 can be discovered in many “small” pursuits:

The “accountability” factor: Looking after pets, gardening, and keeping an eye on neighbors. If somebody (or even something) is counting on you, your mind keeps working.

Continuous education: From learning a new recipe to grasping new technologies, curiosity serves as “exercise” for the mind.

Contribution: Feeling that you are still sitting at the table.

2. Connection as a biological necessity

While most of us see socializing as the “icing on the cake” in terms of our health, for the eighty-year-olds, socialization is the main entree.

Loneliness is more than just an emotional experience; it’s a physical stressor. For instance, you’ve probably come across the shocking claim that feeling lonely is comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. And it isn’t an exaggeration. Chronic isolation maintains the body in a constant state of “high alert” and leads to high levels of cortisol and systemic inflammation, which affects the heart and brain.

As years go by, our social circle becomes smaller. We lose some friends, others become occupied with family responsibilities. Consequently, being socially fit becomes equally important to being physically fit. According to the Harvard Study, those who were the happiest within their relationships at fifty years old turned out to be the healthiest at eighty.

The strategy:

It’s not about needing a huge network of friends. It’s about needing “quality” connections:

The “micro-interaction”: Scientific studies prove that even “weak ties,” such as chatting with your librarian or the clerk at the supermarket, elevate mood and improve mental performance.

Regular socialization: Scheduling a coffee meeting or playing cards once a week establishes a pattern, thereby keeping “silence” from turning into “isolation.”

3. Movement: reclaiming functional independence

There is the false idea that a sharp drop-off in health is inevitable once you turn 80. But while some slowing down is to be expected, the truth about a lot of what is called aging is not really true.

Movement does not necessarily mean trying to be physically attractive at 80 years old; it means being able to do things like stand up from a chair without help, carrying your own grocery bags, and walking on unsteady ground.

A study from 2026, featured in PNAS, showed that exercise causes mitochondrial remodeling. That means that exercise literally signals our cells to keep up production of energy, in a way “reversing” certain aspects of cell aging.

The approach:

The “sit to stand” exercise: Geriatricians frequently assess one’s capability to rise from a sitting position without the use of the hands as a primary predictor of longevity. Repeating this simple task about 10-15 times daily serves as an excellent form of exercise.

Walking for bone density: Walking is not only a cardiovascular activity; its impact on bones helps keep bone density strong, making one less prone to breaks.

Resistance training: No heavy lifting required. Resistance bands and light dumbbells counter sarcopenia (the gradual reduction in muscle mass that comes with aging).

4. The fuel: nutrition and the “thirst gap”

Nutrition at age 80 differs from nutrition at age 40. Although the metabolic rate has slowed down, the demand for certain nutrients rises.

The most frequent error people make is what has been dubbed the “tea and toast” regimen. People opt for foods containing simple carbohydrates because they are easier to cook. The aging body becomes inefficient in handling proteins, so now it is recommended that seniors take in between 1.0 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram body weight per day.

Among the weirdest effects on the body during aging include the “thirst gap,” where the part of your brain that detects thirst becomes less effective, causing you to become dehydrated without ever realizing it. Symptoms of dehydration in the elderly include:

Confusion/brain fog

Dizziness

Urinary infections leading to sudden changes in mental state

The strategy:

Proteins with each meal: Eggs, Greek yoghurt, beans, or meat can help “alert” your muscles to stay strong.

Scheduling hydration: Drink a glass of water with each meal and one in-between meals.

Conclusion: The “upward spiral” and the power of cognitive reserve

The reason why these four pillars—purpose, connection, movement, and nutrition—are so effective is because none of them live by themselves; they form an intricate web in which your life experiences play out. When looking at what happens at the end of this cycle of habits, one sees the formation of Cognitive Reserve.

Consider that the brain is akin to a muscle. By remaining socially involved (connection) and engaging in novel activities (purpose), you are essentially challenging the brain to think through difficult situations and create new connections. This “cognitive reserve” refers to the ability of the brain to function spontaneously in a situation where one approach might no longer be possible due to physical deterioration. In other words, a highly cognitively reserved brain can find “other paths” to accomplish certain tasks, thereby making you immune to the harmful consequences of forgetting things.

Together, all of these make up the “Upward Spiral.” For example, if one feels a purpose to wake up each day, then there is a higher chance of leaving the house. By leaving the house, one is moving the body (movement), which in turn results in meeting up with neighbors (connection). The act of meeting neighbors lifts one’s spirits, resulting in increased hunger levels (nutrition).

On the other hand, all that is needed in order to succeed above age 80 is merely to find out what “domino” has tipped over and tip it back up again. If one feels tired, check their movement. If one feels isolated, examine their purpose.

Aging well is not about dodging the difficulties of eighty; rather, it is about how you choose to face them. It requires an entirely new sort of courage: the courage to remain visible, to get up when it would be easier to sit down, and to reach out when you would rather withdraw. Your latter years need not mark a “slow fade” from life into retirement. Rather, it should be a period of true synthesis—when the lessons learned throughout your lifetime come together with a resolve to remain actively “in the game.”

By making all these tiny decisions each day, you aren’t simply extending your years but also enhancing them with a deeper sense of life. There is always room in our society for active, aware, and involved people in their eighties. In fact, since you’ve witnessed our world’s evolution, no one is more qualified to interpret its future than you.

The moment I finally understood what commitment really means: from doubt to a life-changing realization

After fifteen years of marriage, I made a mistake that I knew would alter everything forever.

This wasn’t an ordinary mistake that would blow over in time. This was the type of mistake that felt suffocating, and it left me unable to breathe. Every minute, every second, was like a lie.

At first, I remained silent. I kept thinking that I would tell her; just not today. After all, every time I had to speak to her about such matters, there was a never-ending list of excuses for why I didn’t want to talk about it at that moment.

It began to consume my entire existence. Looking into her eyes while dining with her became impossible. Her laughter made me cringe in fear. Even the silences between us that once felt comfortable were now stifling.

Eventually, I realized that I was not protecting her from the truth. All I was doing was protecting myself.

So, I told her everything. I told her about that other woman, and how it didn’t really mean anything to me. It just… happened.

It was no neat little speech – it was a chaotic, confusing one where I rambled around and repeated things twice because I had to say everything that needed to be said.

Not once did she interrupt me. And you know what? That was the scariest part of the whole thing.

She just listened while I talked, and I could tell that she was absorbing everything. Bit by bit. Once I got everything off my chest, I realized that I had crossed a line that you don’t come back from.

I prepared myself for the rage that would follow. Actually, I even expected it. Maybe I wished for it because, quite frankly, it made more sense. It’s something you could act upon.

Yet, she didn’t yell. She didn’t toss anything. She didn’t march out the door nor she spoke any harsh words.

My wife simply… fell silent.

And somehow, that was even more painful.

The following days were very peculiar. Nothing dramatic or wild happened—they were bizarre.

She moved around and lived a somewhat normal life, but not entirely. In fact, she cooked dinner once—I’m talking my favorite meal, too. I stood in the kitchen watching her, wondering what on earth was going on.

On another day, there was a small note beside my keys. Not anything about what had happened. Just one simple word: “still.”

That word stayed with me in ways no lecture would.

I didn’t know what to say. I kept expecting her anger to show itself. Or at least, that was what I was waiting for.

So, I tried to make up for that somehow. I sent flowers—too many of them. I apologized endlessly and soon enough, even I started to feel like it became something that was no longer sincere. I gave her lots of empty promises of change, things I wasn’t even certain I would be able to deliver.

But she didn’t push back, and neither did she ask for anything from me.

That is what confused me about everything. She didn’t give me a list of things to do if I wanted to fix things between us. There weren’t any requirements or conditions. It almost seemed like she was playing on an entirely different level than me, and I couldn’t comprehend it at all.

I could take this pressure for only a few days after which I had to know the reason behind it all.

We were sitting in the living room in silence and I finally decided to come out and ask her bluntly, “Why are you acting like this?”

It sounded more irritated than intended.

Pexels

She took some time before responding. However, she finally did look towards me and moved slightly closer to me and her voice sounded surprisingly calm. It wasn’t cold or emotional but very steady when she replied saying, “I have been thinking.”

This single phrase left me speechless.

She said that she was considering everything inside her mind about what should be done and what makes sense.

“And then it hit me,” she said, “that I can choose not to always feel angry about the things around me.”

It seemed like such an easy thing to say, but it wasn’t. And then she said something else, something that made me sit back up straight:

“I’m not doing this for you,” she said. “Not yet anyway. I’m doing it for myself.”

And that hurt more than if she’d screamed at me. Because she was right.

Initially, I believed her being composed meant she was fine, or maybe she simply wished to get over the whole thing quickly.

However, this was definitely not the case. She was not fine, but rather she was refusing to let the whole scenario consume her life. These two are different concepts completely.

When she told me she did not know where things would go from here between us, it was difficult to take, although I knew I had no right to expect anything definite.

“I do not know if everything will be all right,” she said. “I know I do not wish to spend each and every day angry.”

This is when it dawned on me. She wasn’t pretending nothing happened, nor was she offering any quick forgiveness. She was simply choosing how she wanted to spend her life, regardless of my actions.

To be honest, I didn’t see that coming.

Everything I knew about commitment until that point meant staying, putting in the time, working through the difficulties, not leaving.

Well, turns out commitment means much more than that.

It is one thing for someone to stick around, but it’s another thing when there’s an element of self-discipline involved. She could have done anything to make me pay for the way I acted; but she did nothing, not because I was due any such treatment, but rather because she would prefer not to become the bitter woman she could have become.

And that’s commitment to an entirely new level. It wasn’t commitment to the marriage alone, it was commitment to herself.

Everything did not become rosy right after our conversation. The problem did not magically disappear like in any romantic movie.

There are days when it all seems good. But there are also days when things aren’t so great. Every once in a while, it feels like it’s going back to normal, and something tiny makes you realize the distance hasn’t been bridged yet.

The thing that has changed is the way I look at these situations.

Before that talk, I believed that only huge gestures could make any difference — finding the words and doing something to compensate for my wrongdoings. I was completely misguided then.

These days, it’s not even gestures, but more a way of life. And it all comes down to patience. Lots of it.

What I learned from this experience of infidelity and confession is that forgiveness doesn’t really come in a Hollywood fashion in real life.

Sometimes, it does not come instantly; sometimes, it requires more than a grand gesture. And yes, sometimes, it is not about forgiving the other person but choosing to forgive simply because you cannot keep carrying that burden around anymore.

This does not solve all problems; this does not undo what happened. However, it makes the atmosphere different. This makes it possible for the problem to be either healed…or, at the very least, left untouched so it does not worsen.

Commitment, however, is not about perfection. Commitment is about how you respond when you mess up really badly.

Chayote, a simple vegetable with powerful metabolic benefits

Keeping blood sugar levels stable is one of the most important things you can do for your own body. This task, however, becomes particularly challenging when dealing with type 2 diabetes. While medications and regular exercise should not be overlooked as vital parts of managing this condition, proper nutrition remains one of the most important and impactful factors.

Among the usual suspects in the produce aisle, there’s one vegetable that usually flies under the radar: chayote. This pear-like light-green squash is not as popular as other types of vegetables, but its effect on metabolism are powerful, to say the least. Due to the low-calorie nature and the high water content, this vegetable makes a great addition to any diabetic-friendly diet.

What exactly is chayote?

Chayote falls under the same family of Cucurbitaceae, making it related to cucumbers, melons, and summer squashes. The chayote is referred to as “vegetable pear” or “cho-cho,” but whatever name you may call it, one thing is certain – it has an incredibly mild taste, something like a blend of a crisp apple and zucchini.

Nutrition-wise, chayote is built for metabolic efficiency. As per the USDA FoodData Central, a cup of cooked chayote (about 160g) contains:

Calories: 38 kcal

Proteins: 1 gram

Carbohydrates: 8 grams

Fiber: 4.5 grams (which is quite impressive for a low-calorie food)

Water content: 94%

Since it is highly concentrated in water and fiber but low in carbohydrates, its energy density is extremely low. What this means is that you can consume a lot of it without ingesting too much sugars and calories.

The glycemic index: Preventing the spike-and-crash cycle

The most immediate benefit of using chayote comes from its extremely low Glycemic Index. The Glycemic Index refers to a system for rating how quickly the intake of carbohydrate-containing foods raises an individual’s blood glucose level. High glycemic index foods, such as white bread and tropical fruits, result in rapid spikes in the sugar level in the blood. In turn, such foods force the body to produce high amounts of insulin; hence, creating an insulin spike that leads to a sudden “crash,” leaving a person feeling exhausted and irritable.

Since chayote ranks at the lowest point on the glycemic index, it provides an array of benefits to those with Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetic patients. It has been shown by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health that including low glycemic index foods in one’s diet can be highly beneficial to those with Type 2 diabetes because it significantly improves insulin sensitivity, reducing the risks of heart disease. Chayote provides an “insulin buffer” to people suffering from diabetes.

Fiber: The natural glucose “speed bump”

If insulin acts as the fuel for your metabolic car, then fiber acts as the braking system that will keep you from plummeting into the abyss. Indeed, chayote fruit has both types of fibers—soluble and insoluble—and each performs a particular function in managing glucose levels.

Soluble Fiber: As the name implies, this type of fiber absorbs water, forming a viscous gel. This gel serves to slow down the rate of sugar and fat intake into the bloodstream.

Insoluble Fiber: Insoluble fiber increases the bulk of your digestive tract and helps maintain beneficial microbes in your gut. Recently, studies show that gut health correlates to effective insulin action.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that individuals rarely take in more than half the amount of fiber required on a daily basis. Adding chayote to your diet can help fill this void effortlessly. By eating foods rich in fiber such as chayote, one can create a speed bump for carbohydrates in their meal, making sure they do not all reach their bloodstream at once.

The science of myricetin and insulin sensitivity

In addition to the common vitamins, chayote contains numerous bioactive components from plants, referred to as flavonoids. Particularly, one type of flavonoids present in large quantities in chayote has drawn global interest due to its benefits in metabolic health – myricetin.

Current research, including that featured in Frontiers in Nutrition, has indicated that myricetin exhibits strong antidiabetic effects. Myricetin is effective through multiple mechanisms:

Increasing Sugar Uptake: It facilitates glucose uptake in your muscles and adipose tissues, improving how they draw sugar from the bloodstream, even when you have some degree of insulin resistance.

Beta Cell Protection: These are the pancreatic cells involved in insulin production. The antioxidant activity of myricetin assists in protecting beta cells against oxidative damage, delaying the onset of any metabolic deterioration.

Alpha Glucosidase Inhibition: These are enzymes present in your digestive tract which facilitate the breakdown of starch into sugars. Extracts from chayote contain compounds that inhibit this enzyme.

This is why chayote does more than just serve as a mere “side dish”; rather, it functions as a functional food, contributing to positive changes in internal body chemistry.

Clinical evidence: Chayote and metabolic syndrome

It is not only a theory but there have been some clinical observations of the effect of chayote on the human organism. Specifically, researchers examined the effect of chayote on people suffering from Metabolic Syndrome that includes such factors as high blood glucose, high blood pressure, excessive weight.

The experiment conducted by MDPI and published in their journal Antioxidants revealed several effects. People with metabolic problems used chayote in their diet, and the results were impressive:

Reduced Fasting Serum Glucose: Fasting serum glucose was reduced.

Improved HbA1c: HbA1c levels were also reduced because it shows three months of an average sugar level in a person’s blood.

Reduced Inflammation: The antioxidants in chayote increased the activity of enzymes in order to fight chronic inflammation typical for diabetes patients.

While the researchers emphasized that no single food can replace medical treatment, they concluded that Sechium edule (chayote) is a powerful, low-cost complementary tool for glucose control.

Weight management

It is clear that there is a definite relationship between excess body weight and insulin resistance. Visceral fat deposits produce inflammatory agents that impede the physiological function of insulin.

Chayote is described by researchers as a “secret weapon” in one’s arsenal against obesity. This is due to the extremely high satiety index of the fruit. When consuming it, the presence of large amounts of both water and fiber causes stretching of the stomach wall and stimulates the brain to send a signal of satisfaction. The fact that the amount of consumed calories is negligible prevents the creation of a calorie surplus.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), even a modest weight loss of 5–7% can significantly improve insulin sensitivity and even put some cases of Type 2 diabetes into remission. Swapping high-starch sides like potatoes or white rice for roasted or sautéed chayote is a simple, painless way to reduce your caloric intake without feeling like you’re on a “diet.”

Heart health and the potassium connection

The metabolic health of an individual cannot be isolated from their cardiovascular condition. Often, when an individual has problems with their blood sugar level, he or she is likely to have high blood pressure.

The chayote vegetable contains a substantial amount of potassium, a key mineral that ensures the elimination of excessive sodium from the body and promotes the relaxation of blood vessels. In turn, this helps keep blood pressure within acceptable ranges, thereby decreasing the strain placed on the cardiovascular system, which is already experiencing high pressure due to the person’s increased glucose level.

At the same time, dietary fibers present in chayote bind bile acids in the gut, which is helpful in reducing the level of harmful cholesterol.

Folate and cellular repair

Chayote contains a rather large amount of Vitamin B9, also known as folate. In one cup of chayote, there is more than 20% of your folate requirement per day. Folate has a lot of important roles, from repairing the DNA and cell division to the breakdown of homocysteine, which is a type of amino acid associated with increased heart disease and stroke risk when found in high amounts in the body. For individuals living with a metabolic disease, low levels of inflammation and high cell repair capability are crucial.

How to cook chayote

Many people avoid chayote simply because its bumpy skin looks intimidating. The good news is that it’s incredibly easy to work with. If the chayote is young and bright green, you don’t even have to peel it—the skin is perfectly edible and contains a large portion of the antioxidants.

The “potato” swap

This is by far the most widely used preparation method for chayote. Chop the chayote in small pieces, season it with olive oil, salt, pepper, and rosemary, and then bake it in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes. The chayote will remain crunchy and give you more satisfaction than any other soft vegetable; besides, it will provide you with the taste of roasted potatoes with just 1/4 of the carbohydrates.

Sautéed with protein

Slice the vegetable thinly into semicircles, sauté with garlic, onion, and ginger, and then add whichever meat you like. Chayote has very little flavor and therefore makes it easy to get the flavors from the garlic and ginger.

Refreshing “slaw”

A fresh chayote feels like the combination of a jicama and a cucumber. You can either grate it or cut it into thin slivers, then toss it with some lime juice, olive oil, and cilantro. It is a perfect accompaniment to spicy dishes and also a great way to have some fresh raw fiber.

In soups & stews

Chayote is one of those vegetables that are commonly used in traditional soups such as “caldo de pollo” since it does not fall apart the same way zucchini does.

Unsplash

Conclusion

Unlike the super foods like kale or blueberries, chayote doesn’t have an expensive marketing strategy, but its role in blood glucose regulation is hard to ignore. Chayote’s composition that includes low glycemic index, high fiber content, insulin-like plants compounds, and low calorie count make it one of the simplest and highly-effective foods that will allow you to take your well-being under control.

Adding it to your daily diet doesn’t mean that you will have to undergo drastic changes to achieve your goal. All you need to do is try replacing other vegetables with chayote in your stir-fries or roast it instead of your preferred option. In many cases, the tools that help us stay healthy are the easiest ones that we have never used before. Try adding chayote to your diet now and see how quickly it helps you regulate your blood glucose levels.

Prophet who predicted Covid-19 and Queen’s death foresees chilling events

Athos Salomé has been a constant presence in international news articles, appearing in stories published by the New York Post and The Daily Star among the rest. He is sometimes referred to as the Living Nostradamus. Anyways, this 38-year-old Brazilian parapsychologist who asserts that he travels through the timeline of events to alert humanity of an upcoming change in their future, has caused quite a stir with his predictions.

Salomé’s latest dossier on 2026 reveals that this period marks a shift towards a state of invisible warfare and fundamental transformation where the distinctions between war, money, and individual freedom no longer exist due to technology.

The “Living Nostradamus” grew up in a small town in Brazil, where he claims to have found out about his gift when he was only twelve years old. Athos attributes his ability to see things before they happen to both his spiritual insights, which were obtained through the help of an entity known to him as Putsatanakia, and his use of Kabbalist numbers. The technique of calculation is based on the principle that letters can be assigned specific numbers, which can help one uncover certain patterns in names, dates, and historical periods. Salomé became famous around the world for the forecast of many important events, including the outbreak of the coronavirus in China, the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, and Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter. Instead of being described as a psychic who can predict the future, he positions himself as an analyst of the unseen forces that govern the 21st century.

Central to Salomé’s 2026 warnings is the concept of Cobalt Storm. According to him, this refers to an advanced cyber alliance between China and Russia that does not rely on conventional military equipment such as tanks and missiles. This attack strategy concentrates on “traceable-less” sabotage against the energy network, satellites, and financial system of America, Europe, and Japan. Salomé believes that the intermittent power cuts observed in some regions of Spain and Portugal are just the prelude to a bigger digital earthquake that will knock the West off its feet.

This view of cyberwarfare is reflective of technical realities in the real world. While the term “Cobalt Storm” may be his creation, cybersecurity specialists have known that Cobalt Strike software has been employed by state-funded agents for a while now. Initially, the software was designed to enable security practitioners to test their own capabilities; however, a cracked version of the software has been extensively used by Russian hacker group APT29 and other Chinese hacking gangs to gain access to Western government servers. The “vision” presented by Salomé is actually similar to what the current threat assessment is of NATO and the FBI.

Salomé believes that the future of the war beyond the digital battlefield will involve an underground transformation of the world’s economic order using the Athena Protocol, which is being piloted in banks around Singapore, China, Russia, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates. Intelligence organizations and financial elites, including members of the Davos circle, are allegedly trying out a new protocol with the ultimate goal of replacing the US dollar with a world currency pegged on rare earth metals, gold, and carbon credits.

This forecast is indicative of the true phenomenon of “de-dollarization” that can be seen among the BRICS+ countries. Although there may not be an officially confirmed existence of the “Athena Protocol,” the adoption of CBDCs and the decision of developing nations to conduct transactions in their own currency are proven facts. Salomé sees this process not as a change in official policy but as a covert maneuver that will ultimately make geographical boundaries irrelevant as financial influence shifts to a new, non-Western axis of power.

Among the most terrifying parts of Salomé’s prediction about 2026 is his idea of something called ONI. According to him, ONI is a project that uses AI for emotional mapping supposedly in the name of humanitarian help and support of people’s psychological condition. This idea of Salomé is illustrated by the application of emotional biometric ID in refugee camps in Syria and Sudan. The stated aim was to protect from mass suicide or murder, but actually, there was another plan named “predictive surveillance.”

In this particular case, access to basic utilities, food, or transportation could depend on one’s emotions, which would be gauged using advanced facial recognition software and brain wave frequency detectors. This concept alludes to the controversial issues related to the “Social Credit System” implemented in China and the general use of intrusive technology in today’s world. In his writings, Salomé foretells how communication, living, and even war will change when inner emotions become measurable through AI.

In the most recent updates provided by Salomé, he highlights some of the geographic locations whose events will challenge the stability of the world. Among these, the Arctic Circle is the major “flashpoint” for 2026. In light of rapid melting of ice in the Arctic region, he forecasts that Russia and NATO will have conflicts over the shipping lanes and oil fields that become available due to the melting of the ice. Also, the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia will result in economic exhaustion, which will lead to territorial divisions in March 2026.

The proponents of “Living Nostradamus” skepticism often highlight a number of benefits that modern prophets enjoy in regard to their predictions. First of all, many of his prophecies have been validated afterwards based on “hindsight bias,” which means a previous vague prediction gets attached to some major news item occurring lately. Besides, forecasting some general phenomena such as “instability,” “disasters in the Caribbean,” or “royalty with health problems” has a high chance of success in today’s world populated by eight billion people with aged rulers.

What makes Salomé’s prophecies intriguing to society is the way in which he addresses the known fears related to our dependence on technology and climate change. In other words, whether those predictions come from the future or reflect the current social concerns about the modern world, they become a reflection of the mass anxiety of the twenty-first century.

For anyone wishing to keep track with the accuracy of his forecasts as the year 2026 unfolds, Salomé’s main platforms are his Official Instagram account and the many interviews with both HOLA! USA and The Daily Star.

When we think about it, it does not matter whether “the Cobalt Storm” will actually occur as an attack or symbolizes our vulnerability in cyberspace; Salomé’s emergence serves as a reminder that there is one thing that people continue to seek in a period of uncertainty– someone who sees the way out.

Donald Trump Jr. recalls he played video games with Michael Jackson as a child

Donald Trump Jr. has had his fair share in the business of his mogul father and POTUS Donald Trump. Raised in the Trump Tower, he got to experience the life of luxury from the moment he was born.

When he was just 12 years old, his parents divorced and Trump Jr.’s mother, Ivana Trump, got the custody of him and his siblings, sister Ivanka and brother Eric. In fact, at the time, it was Ivana who was spending much of her time with the children while Donald Trump was busy running his business and expanding to Manhattan.

Shutterstock

As a child, Trump Jr. spent most of his summers with his maternal grandparents in Czechoslovakia where he enjoyed going fishing. He also learned to speak fluent Czech.

Being a young boy and not being aware of how things worked between grown ups, Trump Jr. blamed his father for the divorce. “How can you say you love us?” the 12-year-old Trump Jr. told his father, according to a 1990 Vanity Fair article. Later, however, he said he was “manipulated” into thinking that Donald was the only one responsible for the separation.

“Listen, it’s tough to be a 12-year-old. You’re not quite a man, but you think you are. You think you know everything,” Trump Jr. said. “Being driven into school every day and you see the front page and it’s divorce! ‘THE BEST SEX I EVER HAD!‘ And you don’t even know what that means.”

Shutterstock

After the divorce, Ivana received $25 million payout and wrote in her memoir: “Donald might not have been the greatest husband to me, but he was a good father to the kids.”

Ivana was heavily involved into the family business while married to Donald. She was the designer of the interiors at the Grand Hyatt Hotel and Trump Tower, as well as president and CEO of Trump Castle and also president and CEO of the Plaza Hotel.

As his father has always been a very powerful man, he was good friends with a number of celebrities. Speaking of those times and the life at Trump Tower, Trump Jr. wrote in his book Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us: “Even when Dad would bring home a celebrity, which he did often, I would usually run in the other direction.” That, however, wasn’t the case when the King of Pop was around. Michael Jackson owned an apartment at the Trump Tower and he was a frequent visitor of the Trump family.

Trump Jr. recalled he and his siblings had several playdates with the music icon. During an occasion, as he and MJ were playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Nintendo, Donald gave Michael a copy of the game.

Shutterstock

“Michael Jackson used to come up and he was our neighbor at Trump Tower,” Trump Jr. told Fox News. “So I was playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Michael Jackson! You know, this is in the early 90s—maybe even in the late 80s. Peak Michael.

“We’re playing Nintendo and Michael really likes the game. So my dad walks in and says ‘well why don’t you take the game Michael?’ And so I’m sitting there like….,” he said expressing disbelief.

“My parents made us work for the things that we wanted and it was one of the great things they did for us,” he continued.

“So that took me whatever it was time to earn it — I’m pretty sure Michael could’ve called Nintendo and said I want one of those. It wouldn’t have been a big deal, but he just took it. I was like, ‘What’s going on here?’”

After spending some time in Aspen, living in his truck and working as a bartender, Trump Jr. returned to New York in 2001 and he’s been working alongside his father ever since. During Donald Trump’s presidency, Trump Jr. was his chief adviser and helped with the campaign a great deal.

He has been supporting his father’s plan to run for president once again. However, when asked whether he considers running himself, he said at a Conservative Political Conference in Texas that he hasn’t “personally thought about” running for President in 2024.

Shutterstock

Trump Jr. also added that “[unnamed polls have] me pretty high up the list if not at the top of it.” As quoited by People, he also said: “Who knows. The reality with that job is you also have to want to do the day job, right? It’s not just about the campaigning.

“I love being in that fight, I love fighting for the things that are out there, that I believe in as a conservative. I will do that irrespective. To want to actually get in that mix, is a whole different story.”

Trump Jr. was married to now ex-wife Vanessa for 14 years before they decided to untie the knot back in 2018. They are parents of five children.

Public restroom warning: avoid using toilet paper that has any suspicious marks or stains

Using public restroom on a daily basis almost feels like a routine, so we do not give it much thought, do we?

Regardless of whether you are in an office, in a shopping complex, or traveling by plane, public bathrooms will always be available. However, even such familiar surroundings can present some risks when it comes to hygiene, which may go unnoticed unless one pays attention. For instance, one of the things that one needs to consider when visiting the bathroom is the state of the toilet paper. Although this may seem trivial, experts recommend considering the small things.

On first inspection, a small spot or a mark on the roll may seem insignificant; after all, it could simply be a speck of dirt or a flaw in manufacturing. However, occasionally, it may signify something more than meets the eye. Toilet paper found in highly trafficked restroom facilities is subject to constant exposure to humidity and high foot traffic throughout the day. This means that it becomes quite easy for the toilet paper to become contaminated due to poor maintenance. Damp spots or weird marks usually mean the paper has been touched by wet hands or splashed, which isn’t exactly what you want to see.

However, the key point here is that most bacteria and viruses are completely invisible to the naked eye. This makes a sheet of toilet paper look “acceptable” but in reality, serve as a great landing strip for microorganisms. In other words, once a sheet of toilet paper comes into contact with bacteria or viruses, the latter become transferred from the former onto the surface of a person’s body through direct contact. While you are not likely to fall ill on each occasion, your chances certainly increase when hygiene starts to slip.

This is the reason why experts suggest just skipping over any paper that doesn’t look perfectly dry, clean, and intact.

To be frank, there are a lot of things in public restrooms that would have your personal toilet turn its back on you. Starting from the door handles and dripping faucets and moving on to flush handles and toilet paper dispensers, there is always a bunch of people who use these objects daily. Of course, you don’t have to refuse using public bathrooms, but you can be more cautious when it comes to touching things. It’s not enough to just watch for paper – you should also avoid getting close to any standing water and dispensers that haven’t been cleaned in days. It won’t take you much time to check your surroundings.

If the paper feels wet, if there is an odd color change to it, or if you get that gut feeling that something isn’t quite right, don’t hesitate. Moving over to the next stall, or searching for fresh paper, can take only a few seconds and greatly decrease your risk of being exposed to potential germs. For anyone who needs to travel often, or travels through crowded cities on a daily basis, keeping a packet of travel tissues or sanitizing wipes with you at all times is a game-changer. It may go unused most of the time, but when you’re in an unkempt restroom on the side of the road, or at a sports stadium, you’ll thank yourself for bringing your own.

It’s also worth remembering that you’re allowed to speak up when a facility isn’t cutting it. If a restroom is clearly out of soap or looks like a disaster zone, mentioning it to a manager or the janitorial staff is actually a huge help. They can’t fix what they don’t know is broken, and a quick heads-up helps ensure the next person doesn’t have a terrible experience. Think of it as a bit of “hygiene karma”—by looking out for the state of the shared space, you’re helping maintain a healthier standard for the whole community, which eventually benefits everyone.

No matter how much scouting there may be, the best line of defense you can ever give yourself is the one you do at the sink. The use of soap and water to wash your hands is a very effective practice because of this very reason. This is especially true after going through the stall where you cannot help but touch something that is full of germs such as the lock or the handle of the sink itself. While it is always good to have some kind of high alcohol-based sanitizer with you, there is no comparison to physically washing those germs away.

Thus, this assignment is not about developing an unhealthy obsession with cleanliness or making you feel uncomfortable every time you go to use the restroom in a public facility. The idea here is to develop some “street smart” habits which will help you to feel at ease throughout the day, realizing that you do everything necessary for your health but do not make any additional efforts. This means that there is no need to become paranoid or obsessed with hygiene issues – just pay attention to details and follow basic rules which are quite natural and easy to remember.

All in all, staying healthy in a public space does not mean analyzing each and every inch of the room. In order to stay healthy in the bathroom, a person only needs to be vigilant and to act rationally, following certain rules and taking proper steps. Thus, one needs to have a look around the room, wash hands properly and pay attention to other details which are rather important for one’s hygiene.

My 13-year-old brought a starving friend home—then something from her backpack stopped me cold

For many years, I lived with the illusion that life is some kind of grand ledger sheet. I thought that, somehow, by working hard in my job and spending enough hours in our home, everything would even out in the end, and I could finally live in some sense of balance. I was expecting “enough” to show up – enough to eat that I wouldn’t have to bother calculating the unit price of cereal anymore, enough heat so that our thermostat didn’t need to go above 65 degrees, enough emotion so that I could actually exist in our hallways without feeling like a ghost.

What I discovered, though, is that “enough” wasn’t something you achieved. It was a fight. It was a constant battle waged at the checkout line, during the mad scratching of numbers into a checkbook, and in the late night moments of lying in bed awake, trying to do the calculations in my head to figure out our financial debt. Enough was a ghost that haunted me, and I was failing to catch it.

It always started on Tuesdays, which were the absolute worst. At our place, Tuesday was known as “rice night,” which was a tactic made out to seem like a normal thing. As I stood at the kitchen counter gazing into a box of chicken thighs and some wrinkled carrots, I knew I had to make this pitiful bunch of food stretch to last an entire meal for three people, and even one more for lunch tomorrow, or everything would fall apart. I always found myself thinking about what bill I could ignore for ten more days until everything went dark.

Dan came in off the garage floor looking like someone out of a movie of black and gray shadows. The grimy nails and slumped shoulders revealed that he had been working on automobiles that cost more than our yearly salary. We exchanged the familiar pleasantries – quick summaries about how the day went, and feeble jests at our daughter Sam’s addiction to her cellphone. However, my mind wandered away from the conversation because the focus of my attention was the stove and the steaming pot there.

But then everything changed in our life course once again when Sam walked in and brought with her a girl I did not know, drowned in the dark and bulky hoodie. Holding on tightly to the straps of her tattered purple bag, the girl kept staring intently at her worn sneakers. There was no need for Sam to ask anyone for permission to let Lizie stay until dinner was ready.

I will never forget the sudden shock of fear that ran through me. It wasn’t hatred; it was the stark reality of a mother who had already shared her food equally in exactly three and a half parts. My grip on the knife became firmer as I momentarily despised this child, as one more person I could not possibly provide for. Then I saw her. Really saw her. She was shaking in a warm kitchen and the sunken places under her cheekbones showed that she was hungry for much more than just a skipped meal. I stuffed my bitterness down into a shadowy crevice of myself and got out a fourth plate.

To see Lizie eating was like witnessing an exercise in resignation. Unlike the average teenager, she did not plunge in with reckless abandon. Rather, she ate with a frighteningly precise politeness. Her rice portion was a scant bit of food. One chicken piece was all she allowed herself along with exactly two carrot slices. Her movements made her seem invisible to everyone as she flinched whenever there was any clinking sound or when Dan laughed loudly.

The conversation that evening was a delicate affair. Upon hearing that Sam was her partner in physical education class, Dan attempted to smooth things out by bringing up their school. The voice that came from Lizie was soft and almost imperceptible. She admitted loving algebra because she enjoyed patterns. This was a chilling revelation—that a young girl loved math because everything else in her life was unpredictable and crumbling around her. On Lizie’s way out, Sam did something that made me feel a lump in my throat. She handed Lizie a banana, saying it is our “house rule” that no one leaves without receiving anything.

Explosion took place the moment the door closed behind me. I lashed out at Sam. “We are struggling to make ends meet,” I said, “and we cannot simply give what little we have left to whoever you feels pity for.” But Sam did not back down. With an intense look in her eyes, she explained how Lizie almost fainted in the bathroom, how her dad worked two shifts a day just to pay off their rent, and how they have been going on without electricity.

The knowledge that my daughter’s “friend” was really just a teenage girl going through systemic collapse made my small calculations seem traitorous. I came to know that as I was worrying about the grains of rice and calculating in order to save whatever I could, a little girl in the neighborhood was really fading away.

The following day, my concept of “enough” took on a completely different meaning. I stopped worrying about making my chicken last longer and just started purchasing whatever large packets of pasta I could find in the grocery stores. Lizie became a part of our life and a constant presence in our kitchen. Initially, she used to apologize for taking up so much space or fall asleep on the counter due to her exhaustion.

It took about a week before we were fully aware of the severity of the situation. Lizie’s backpack knocked over, dumping a pile of “Final Warning” letters on top of a journal with an entry labeled, “What we take first if we get evicted.” The sight of a child’s meticulously written list of the items she would keep in case she and her family lost their home brought a realization to all of us.

The situation escalated to a crisis level when Lizie’s father, Paul, finally showed up at our door to take Lizie home with him. At this point, he looked like a completely empty man, struggling under the weight of an emotional cocktail, consisting of his pride in himself and his grief over his wife’s death, trying to keep faith with his promise to “handle everything” alone. It was only a direct confrontation between parents that allowed Dan to talk some sense into him and make him accept the help available for the sake of his daughter’s well-being.

The weeks that followed did not turn into a fairy tale but a marathon of organizing and sorting everything out. Every evening was filled with conversations with the school district, endless paperwork related to food pantries, and also discussions with the owner of the house regarding rent arrangements. Dan became an expert of “clearance sales” sections in stores, and we managed to live on fewer funds so that Lizie could get a bit more.

However, something unusual took place while we were going through these hardships. In spite of a tighter budget for the groceries we used, the house became freer in some way.

For all these years, I had been operating under the assumption that my life was an example of a closed system; whenever I gave something away, I was losing something. However, Lizie taught me that “enough” is not about material possessions. It is a mindset, one which gives me the peace of mind that I am not going through everything alone.

Eventually, when the electricity returned, and the possibility of eviction was put on hold, Lizie went back to her home. However, she did not really leave our table, either. She visited us not out of hunger but out of love. She held herself differently now, she spoke with authority, and the fearful look she used to give way to a hearty laugh.

One night, several months later, as I stood in the kitchen staring at that very same stove which used to make me feel such resentment, I prepared dinner that was, by no means, lavish. As I heard the girls’ voices coming from the living room, I did not feel the old familiar twinge of stress. No, there was no need to check and recount carrots or calculate rice.

I was simply arranging four plates on the counter when it occurred to me that the hunt had ended and that I had finally got hold of the elusive prey. No, it was not about having plenty of money or a well-stocked pantry. The truth is, I had found what I had been searching for all those years – in the form of a collective effort, an opened door, and an additional chair. That night, I knew without any calculations that there were enough plates for us to have more than enough.

New details of Ivana Trump’s death come to light

The news of the passing of Ivana Trump, the first wife of former president Donald Trump, caught the world by storm. At the time of her passing, she was 73 years old. Ivana was the mother of three of Donald Trump’s children, Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka, and Eric.

At the moment, neither the Trump family statement nor the post put out by Donald Trump himself has mentioned Ivana’s cause of death.

The former president shared the news of his ex-wife’s passing on the social media platform Truth Social where he wrote: “I am very saddened to inform all of those that loved her, of which there are many, that Ivana Trump has passed away at her home in New York City.”

Her children, who are devastated and in deep mourning over the loss of their mother remember her as an “incredible woman – a force in business, a world-class athlete, a radiant beauty and caring mother and friend.”

Their family statement read: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ivana Trump. She fled from communism and embraced this country.

“She taught her children about grit and toughness, compassion and determination. She will be dearly missed by her mother, her three children, and ten grandchildren.”

What is known of Ivana Trump’s sudden passing comes from The Fire Department of New York. According to Reuters, first responders answered a call about cardiac arrest at an “aided individual” at about 12.40. p.m. When they arrived at Ivana’s apartment, they found a “73-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive.”

Although the exact cause of death hasn’t been revealed, the New York Police Department said there did not “appear to be any criminality” related to her death.

Ivana Trump was considered to be a very important and influential person in Trump’s life as she’s credited with helping him build his empire.

Ivana was born on February 20, 1949 in Gottwaldov, today’s Zlin, Czechoslovakia, today’s Czech Republic.

As a child, she had it all. Her father Milos was very strict, but he taught his daughter to be disciplined. Ivana was very good at athletics and learned how to ski when she was around three years old. Some of her former classmates describe her as a very bright and intelligent woman who excelled at school.

Her beauty helped her get into the modeling industry and work with some of the most famous names in the world of fashion at the time after finding her way out of Communist-controlled Czechoslovakia.

Once in Canada, Ivana met and later married Austrian skier Alfred Winklmayr. The two stayed together for two years, and then in 1976, Ivana went to New York at a fashion show and that’s when her love story with the former president Trump began.

In her memoir, Ivana wrote how she and some friends were at Maxwell’s Plum, described by a 1988 The New York Times article as “a flamboyant restaurant and singles bar that, more than any place of its kind, symbolized two social revolutions of the 1960s – sex and food.”

Getting a table there wasn’t easy, and as Ivana was waiting, this tall man with blue eyes tapped her on the shoulder, introduced himself as Donald Trump, and told her he will arrange a table for her. “I look at my friends and said, ‘The good news is, we’re going to get a table real fast. The bad news is, this guy is going to be sitting with us,’” she said in an interview with the NY Post.

After the dinner, Donald paid the bill and left the place. Once she was out, Ivana noticed him waiting for her in his limousine, and that’s how they started dating. At the time, Donald was the richest and most influential mogul who had just inherited his father’s empire and business.

Shortly after, Donald and Ivana tied the knot. First, their son Donald Trump Jr.was born, and then they welcomed their daughter Ivanka and son Eric.

After 14 years of marriage, the two divorced, and at the time, all eyes were on them. Ivana received $25 million and custody over her kids. Speaking of Donald, she always praised him of being the father every child could ask for. Although strict and unconventional, Donald was devoted and his children love him and support him.

“Donald might not have been the greatest husband to me, but he was a good father to the kids,” Ivana wrote. “Obviously, they adore him and are fiercely loyal to him. If he were a horrible dad, that would not be the case. If Donald wants to write a book about fatherhood, I would be happy to read it.

“I believe the credit for raising such great kids belongs to me. I was in charge of raising our children before our divorce, and I had sole custody of them after the split,” she wrote in her memoir Raising Trump. “When each one finished college, I said to my ex-husband, “Here is the finished product. Now it’s your turn.”

After Donald, Ivana was married twice. Both times with men younger than her.

Rest in peace, Ivana Trump.

UPS driver goes viral after sharing his weekly paycheck

The “Great Resignation” may have cooled, but the “Great Paycheck Pivot” is officially in full swing—and it’s arriving in a brown truck.

As Skyler Stutzman, a UPS driver based in Oregon, pressed “post” on his TikTok video showing his paycheck for the week in late 2023, he not only became an overnight sensation but also unlocked the key to one of the best-kept secrets in the blue-collar world. As many white-collar workers struggle with the concept of “quiet quitters” and stagnant salaries, Stutzman’s open discussion about his salary, which has the potential for six-figure incomes with top-tier benefits, has sent a shockwave for the labor market.

The clip revealed that Stutzman worked 42 hours at $44.26 per hour, earning $2,004 before taxes and taking home a little over $1,300 after deductions.

Needles to say, the clip caused a stir on the social media and triggered a lot of comments from people who compared their salary to Stutzman’s, especially those netizens whose job requires a university degree and a bunch of other qualifications. Well…it did sound like some of them were a bit jealous.

“Not me realizing that a UPS driver makes more than I do. 20 years in my field with a degree!” one person lamented.

Another added, “$44? I’m a dang nurse only making $32.”

In fact, many people joked about it, albeit half-heartedly, about joining the team themselves as drivers. But, as Stutzman explained in a series of follow-up videos, getting to where he is today has not been an overnight success. In one video, he mentioned that it took him nearly six years to land a full-time gig, followed by another four years of incremental pay increases to get to where he is today. That’s about a decade’s worth of waiting, which someone likened to the years it takes to become a doctor.

Stutzman also noted that workers may be required to start at a UPS warehouse before moving into a driver role. Thus, even though Stutzman’s paycheck may make the work sound appealing, it’s definitely not the easiest path. And that’s not even taking into consideration the physical work that goes into delivering packages.

Stutzman explained that he was sharing his paycheck as a matter of radical transparency, a core value upheld by the Teamsters union during their high-stakes 2023 negotiations.

He wanted to show the fruits of the labor battle the union fought for: a historic contract with substantial wage increases and safer conditions, such as the promise of air-conditioned delivery vehicles for the first time ever.

The point of Stutzman’s post wasn’t to invite envy but rather to show the power of collective bargaining and the importance of wages that keep up with the cost of living.

@skylerleestutzman Quite the 's'kerfuffle I'd say. Quite a lot going on. #upsdriver ♬ original sound – Skyler Stutzman

While the internet buzzed over individual pay stubs, UPS CEO Carol Tomé confirmed the new standard during a 2023 earnings call. Tomé stated that by the end of the new five-year Teamsters contract, full-time drivers would enjoy an average total compensation package of $170,000. She further emphasized that the deal didn’t just favor those behind the wheel; part-time union workers would see their minimum pay rise to $25.75 per hour, all while maintaining the ‘gold-standard’ healthcare and pension benefits that have made UPS a cornerstone of American labor.

Foods that help you sleep and foods that don’t

When we are not getting enough sleep, it can have negative consequences on both our body and mind. Eventually, lack of sleep does more than just make us tired; it leaves us drained, foggy, and irritable, and it can increase the risk for serious health issues in the longer run. The good thing, however, is that it’s never too late to start forming better sleeping habits and getting your life back on track.

Nowadays, most of us tend to follow strict schedules packed with a bunch of commitments, and sadly, 24 hours aren’t always enough to have everything done, so we tend to start cutting corners, and sleep is usually the first thing we cross off the list of our priorities. Between our jobs, our families, and our screens, it’s easy to stay up a little too late or drag ourselves out of bed a little too early. While these things are important, cutting corners on sleep consistently eventually alters how both our body and brain operate, even if we are not really aware of it until we are running on empty.

So, how do we know we are running low on sleep? The most common signs are irritability, mood changes, or problems concentrating. Most times, sleep deprivation is also visible when we look ourselves in the mirror and notice dark circles or puffiness under our eyes.

While each individual is different when it comes to the hours of sleep they actually need in order to get through the day, the widely accepted rule says teenagers need between 8 and 10 hours of sleep daily, while adults need 7 to 9. Senior need 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.

A great way to determine your personal “sweet spot” when it comes to the hours you need to sleep each night is to pay attention how you are feeling the next day based on the hours you get to sleep the previous night.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lack of sleep affects almost every part of our body, including the hormones that help regulate hunger and metabolism. This is the reason we always feel like having junk food when we’re tired. Prolonged deprivation of sleep is associated with more severe medical conditions like heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Sleep deprivation also affects our mental well-being. It is difficult to handle situations like anxiety when mentally exhausted because our brain has not had a chance to reboot.

Sleep is like a restoration project for the body. When you’re asleep, your body is hard at work. Your system is busy repairing muscles, balancing your hormones, and even “cleaning” waste from your brain. Sleep is also one of the best ways to combat stress. Sleep helps you keep your cortisol levels under control. When you’re well-rested, you’re able to handle the next day.

If you are having trouble getting a good night sleep, the good thing is that even slight changes to your routine can make a great difference.

For example, you can try going to bed at the same time each night, keep your room temperature cool, and keep your room dark. It’s also a good idea to put your phone away some time before going to sleep, avoid that late-night cup of coffee or a glass of alcohol, and get some physical activity during the day. If all this fails, then maybe it’s time to consult a medical professional who can give you useful advice and even medications.

At the end of the day, when you finally decide to prioritize your sleep, you are not just going to start the morning fresh and energized, but you will also help your heart, your brain, and your mood.

No matter your age, once you decide sleep becomes a non-negotiable part of your routine, you’ll start to feel real difference in your energy and focus.

The choice of food is also important when it comes to good-night sleep that comes without disruptions. Some foods help you sleep better, while others will just leave you lying awake all night.

So let’s take a closer look at the foods than can help facilitate your sleep.

1. Turkey

Turkey is an excellent source of lean protein; however, it is more famous for containing tryptophan, an essential amino acid that is used by your body to produce serotonin and melatonin—two of the most important chemicals that are used to regulate your mood as well as your sleep-wake cycles. Once in the brain, tryptophan helps increase the production of serotonin, which is then converted to melatonin, the hormone that tells your body it’s time to sleep.

Of course, consuming a slice of turkey won’t be enough, because tryptophan works best when paired with carbs which enable amino acids to get to your brain more effectively, as explained by Sleep Foundation.

2. Almonds

Almonds are a nutrient-rich snack that can, in fact, do a lot to ensure a good night’s rest. Almonds are rich in magnesium, which is good for relaxing the muscles and regulating the body’s internal clock. With just a single serving of almonds, which is one ounce, you are assured of 77 mg of magnesium, which can do a lot for the quality of your sleep.

In addition to that, almonds are a natural source of melatonin, the hormone that regulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle, as well as healthy fats, which are good for you anyway. Almonds are low in sugar, so they do not cause a rapid increase in energy, making them a perfect snack to ensure a good night’s rest.

3. Kiwi

Kiwi make for a great healthy snack because they are low in calories. But did you know that they’re also good for a good night’s sleep? Just like almonds, kiwi contain serotonin, the chemical that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and kickstarts melatonin production. On top of that, they are also rich in antioxidants and vitamin C.

4. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is a classic for a reason. This tea contains an antioxidant called apigenin. This antioxidant binds to specific receptors in your brain that make you relax a little bit and feel drowsy. Because of this, chamomile tea is the best solution for anyone who wants to relax or needs a solution to deal with insomnia without grabbing the pills.

5. Fatty Fish

Fatty fish like salmon, trout, and mackerel are packed with vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids which may help regulate serotonin levels and support better sleep.

6. Tart Cherry Juice

Tart cherry juice is yet another natural source of melatonin. Consuming some of the juice before going to bed can ensure that you are asleep for a longer time, as well as improve the quality of your sleep. In fact, research indicates that the juice can even ensure that you fall asleep a little more comfortably when your head hits the pillow.

7. White Rice

White rice has a high glycemic index, which can also help you fall asleep faster, as it allows tryptophan to enter your brain easily. Having some of this an hour before you go to bed can help you fall asleep faster and even improve your sleep quality.

8. Passionflower Tea

The flavonoid antioxidants found in passionflower tea are natural relaxants that can aid your body in getting into a healthy sleeping routine. The relaxing effect of passionflower tea can take the edge off any stress or anxiety you may be feeling, making it much easier to fall asleep.

9. Dairy Products

Dairy products, including milk and yogurt, are good sources of tryptophan, the amino acid that your body needs in order to create serotonin and melatonin, the “dynamic duo” for controlling your sleep.

Having some dairy products in your evening meal, especially if you’ve had some exercise during the day, can really help your body relax, which makes it much easier to fall into a deep sleep that rejuvenates your body.

10. Bananas

Think of bananas as of nature’s own little relaxation kit. They’re chock-full of magnesium and potassium, which are two minerals that do all the hard work for you when it comes to relaxing your muscles and soothing your nervous system.

Having a banana in the evening is a great way to help your body relax on a physical level, which means that falling asleep is easy, and staying asleep until your alarm goes off is even easier.

11. Oatmeal

When we turn to a comforting meal, it’s not unlikely that we choose oatmeal, since it’s high in carbs and fiber that can cause sleepiness if consumed before going to bed. Also, it contains melatonin, which we already mentioned is what helps us fall asleep.

12. Seeds

Pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds are like little magnesium powerhouse. Magnesium is also known as the “relaxation mineral” that helps the muscles release tension and reminds your nervous system that it’s time to chill.

Having seeds as part of your nightly routine, maybe soaked in yoghurt or just as a snack, can help you relax and have a better sleep.

13. Peanuts

Peanuts are an excellent source of niacin and folate, two nutrients essential for the production of serotonin. So, if you want your body to “switch gears” and starts preparing for sleep, have some peanuts before going to bed, you won’t regret it.

14. Walnuts

When you think of an “all-in-one” snack for a good night sleep, think walnuts. Not only they are naturally melatonin-rich, but they also have good fats and antioxidants that are beneficial for the brain.

Food to Avoid for a Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep Foundation reminds us that besides the foods mentioned above, which facilitate our sleep, there are also foods to avoid if we have troubles sleeping.

Caffeine is a no-brainer, and I guess that’s something we are all aware of but there are also other foods that affect our sleep as much as the caffeine.

1. Coffee (of course), strong tea, and energy drinks

Coffee is at the top of the list for sleep disruptors because caffeine suppresses sleep pressure even six hours before bedtime. But caffeine is not just in coffee. It is also found in tea, energy drinks, and sweet treats such as tiramisu. However, as metabolism is genetically determined, all caffeine products should be avoided in the late afternoons to prevent fragmented sleep, morning grogginess, and caffeine dependency.

2. Chocolate and cocoa desserts

Chocolate masks stimulants behind a comforting reputation. Cocoa contains caffeine and theobromine, which can trigger alertness, especially in dark chocolate. Beyond stimulation, chocolate’s fat and sugar can cause nighttime reflux and indigestion. To ensure deeper rest, treat chocolate like coffee and avoid it in the hours before bedtime.

3. Alcohol before bed

Alcohol is a deceptive sleep aid that trades quick sedation for shallow, fragmented rest. While it speeds up sleep onset, it disrupts sleep architecture, suppresses REM, and worsens snoring or reflux. This “nightcap” often leads to 2 a.m. wakefulness and morning grogginess, creating a cycle of caffeine dependency the next day.

4. Spicy dishes and chili-heavy takeaways

Spicy foods have a tendency to interrupt sleep because they cause heartburn and indigestion, especially when you sleep on your back. In addition, capsaicin increases the human body’s temperature, which is contrary to the natural processes of heat loss for sleeping. This has the effect of forcing the human body to digest the meal and control its heat at the same time.

5. Sugary desserts

Sugary desserts can interfere with sleep because they cause blood glucose levels to spike and provide large amounts of saturated fat and refined flours. The effects of this are lighter sleep and more awakenings. While ice cream or cake may be tempting, a midnight dessert means an exhausting morning.

6. White bread, sugary cereals, refined carbohydrates

White bread, sugary cereals, and crackers are all refined carbs that are stealthy sleep disruptors. Their high glycemic index causes blood sugar to shoot up while the body is trying to wind down, which might contribute to insomnia. These “light” foods are often low in fiber, causing shallow sleep and morning grogginess without the obvious discomforts of heartburn or caffeine.

7. Fried foods, burgers, pizza, and fatty meats

Greasy foods such as burgers, pizza, and fried chicken ruin sleep because they put the digestive system to work overtime. Fatty foods cause light and unrefreshing sleep. They also cause reflux. These foods keep the body active and engaged in heavy digestion even when it should be resting.

8. Tomatoes, citrus, and acid-triggering sauces

Healthy foods like tomatoes and citrus can ruin your sleep as they can set off heartburn as soon as you lay flat. Although this does not completely wake you up, it can disrupt your sleep. To save your sleep, eat such acidic foods earlier to enable digestion before sleeping.

9. Beans, lentils, broccoli, and other gas-producing foods

Healthy legumes and cruciferous vegetables can cause sleep disruption because of gas, bloating, and pressure. Although beans and broccoli are full of fiber, which is great for you, they are digested slowly, keeping your body restless. To reap the nutritional benefits of beans and broccoli without having your sleep affected, have large portions of them during the day.

What your favorite flavor says about you: a fun personality insight

It’s actually kind of wild just how much our little daily habits and behaviors, especially in terms of the food we eat, can reveal about who we really are. Are you the kind of person who reaches for the same snack every time? Or the kind of person who can’t help but be attracted to the boldest, sharpest flavors possible? Either way, it’s not just about the food itself. Those behaviors tend to be like little windows into your mood and your actual experience of the world.

If you think about it, we’re not necessarily choosing these flavors at random. We’re drawn to things that somehow connect with our headspace at any particular time. Things that somehow ground us, excite us, or feel right. That’s what makes these choices interesting.

This is not some scientific study or psychological in-depth analysis. It is simply an intuitive, playful way of viewing yourself in the context of flavor. Each personality type has its own style: bold, relaxed, sweet, or adventurous; and often times, one of them will feel more like “you” than the rest.

So, what’s your favorite flavor saying about you today?

Caramel Apple – The Balanced Dreamer

If you’re a caramel apple enthusiast, then you’re probably living in the sweet spot between two worlds. You love the best things in life, but your feet stay firmly on the ground. There’s a natural balance to the way things go in your life. You’re never easily rattled, and you always seem to find your center.

You’re the go-to person when things get messy. You’re the voice of reason and stability in the midst of chaos. You’re a thoughtful and emotionally intelligent person, and this makes you a steady and reliable person to have in your life.

You haven’t lost your sense of wonder and your big dreams. You’re a dreamer, and the things in life that might seem mundane to other people, to you, they’re magical.

Cherry – The Confident Romantic

Cherry types are used to attention, and you know what? They thrive on it. If you are a cherry type, you are a bold and expressive individual, comfortable in your own skin.

You are a romantic at heart. Whether it is a love affair, a friendship, a passion for life or a work project, you are all-in. There is passion and intensity to everything you do, and while that may be a little too much for some people, for those around you, you are impossible to forget. You are honest and will voice your opinions even if they are unpopular. Some may say you are a little dramatic, but those who know you know you are just honest and straightforward.

Pecan – The Old Soul

Choosing pecan means you are a person who is extremely grounded. You are someone who values meaning over noise, depth over superficiality, and connection over complete chaos.

You are probably a person who loves quiet moments, deep conversations, and traditions that feel like a warm hug. There is a sense of timelessness to you, as if you have a well of knowledge you have been carrying around for a while now.

You are probably a person people come to for advice. You are a good listener and talker only when you have something meaningful to say. Being around you just feels like home.

Blueberry – The Quiet Strength

If blueberry is your choice, then you might not be the loudest person in the room, but you are probably the one making the biggest impact. You are an observer, someone who absorbs everything before making your next move.

You are someone with quiet strength. You handle life’s curveballs with a lot of grace, and you don’t feel the need to brag about how tough you are. In fact, you’d rather let your results speak for themselves.

You might be someone who is easily overlooked at first, but when people see what you’re made of, then they see how much depth is there. You are someone who is smart, solid, and emotionally balanced, someone who makes an impact without even trying.

Pumpkin – The Comfort Giver

You’re the human equivalent of a fireplace if you’re a pumpkin lover. If you’re one of them, then you’re probably the kind of person who is very nurturing, reliable, and the go-to person whenever someone needs emotional support.

You have the capacity to give people a sense of security. It might be in the form of an encouraging word or simply being present; the presence of someone like you is enough to make anyone feel better. You’re the type of person who listens and reassures everyone that everything will be fine.

You’re the type of person who is very grounded. You value kindness and real emotional intimacy. You’re the type of person who looks out for the well-being of everyone else as well.

Coconut – The Free Spirit

Love the coconut? Then you’re all about being free and doing your own thing. So if this was your decision, then I guess you’re not really interested in following the crowd and doing your own thing.

You’re an inquisitive person who isn’t afraid of anything. Being stuck in a routine is like being in jail to you. You’re at your best when you’re exploring or doing something entirely new.

There’s just a little bit of wild in you, but that’s what makes you so attractive. People love your authenticity and the fact that you just dive into life without worrying about what’s “expected.”

Maple Sugar — The Gentle Heart

If maple sugar is your pick, kindness is basically your superpower. You move through the world with a certain softness, empathy, and a lot of genuine sincerity.

You’re the person who catches the little things—you notice how someone is really doing and what they might need before they even ask. Just being in the room with you can make people feel seen and appreciated.

You aren’t looking for applause or a big thank you, but your impact is huge. People trust you and feel a sense of peace around you that they can’t quite find anywhere else.

Key Lime — The Energetic Optimist

Key lime lovers bring the light. If this is your vibe, you’re naturally upbeat and you bring a fresh energy into every room you walk into.

You have a way of cheering people up, even when things are looking pretty grim. Your optimism isn’t just blind luck; it’s a choice. You decide to see the good, find the fix, and keep things moving forward.

People crave your company because you bring a sense of fun and lightness. You’re the reminder that life shouldn’t be taken too seriously and that the present moment is worth enjoying.

Banana – The Easygoing Soul

If banana is your choice, then you are refreshingly simple – genuine, warm, and incredibly easy to be around. You don’t feel the need to overcomplicate things, which is why people find you so easy to be around.

You enjoy comfort, honesty, and relationships that don’t feel like a chore. People feel like they can breathe around you because you don’t bring any unnecessary drama or pressure to the table.

There is something powerful about being simple. You know who you are, so you don’t feel like you have to prove anything to anyone.

Sweet Potato — The Hidden Gem

Sweet potato represents a kind of depth that isn’t always obvious at first glance. If you picked this, you might seem a bit reserved to start, but there is so much going on under the surface.

You’re thoughtful, creative, and you spend a lot of time in your own head. You don’t reveal your whole self to everyone immediately, but for those who stick around, they find someone incredibly complex and rich.

There is a massive amount of strength in your quietness. You don’t have to shout to be powerful, and your presence often leaves a more lasting impression than the loudest voice in the room.

Chocolate – The Intense Lover

Chocolate lovers are the “all-in” type. If you’re one of them, then you’re passionate, emotional, and fully present in your life.

You’re not one to do things halfway. It doesn’t matter if it’s your job, your hobbies, or your relationships – you give it your all. And while it can be overwhelming at times, it makes your life experiences incredibly rich.

You’re not one for small talk or shallow relationships. You want it all or nothing at all. And when you’re in it, you’re in it with everything you have. It makes you both powerful and unforgettable.

Strawberry – The Playful Charmer

You are all about joy, lightness, and even a little wink. So if this is your flavor, then you’re the one who brings the joy and the positivity wherever you go.

You’re all about the light side of life and try not to get bogged down in the heavy stuff. Your playful nature makes you super accessible, and everyone just wants to be around you.

You’re really good at making people happy without even trying. There’s just something charming about you that feels completely effortless and, more importantly, completely genuine.

So… What Did You Pick?

The reality is, at the end of the day, a taste does not determine who you are. Human beings are too complex and multifaceted for something like a taste preference to determine our essence. What you chose today might just represent how you are feeling today or even what you need to help you get through the rest of the day.

Perhaps today you are feeling the high-intensity energy of chocolate, but tomorrow you might crave the refreshing taste of strawberry or key lime. And that’s the way it should be.

Our personality is not static; it evolves and develops as we go through different stages in life.

So, it’s not really about defining you; it’s more like a little representation of you in this moment.

The best part is, you can evolve, reinvent yourself, and adore every single version of you in the process.

Health expert warns itching in the breast shouldn’t always be ignored

Breast itching is something that many women have experienced at some point in their lives. It can be a mild problem or a possible sign of an underlying issue. In most cases, it is simply a matter of dry skin, hormonal changes, or irritation from clothing. While occasional itching is not something to be worried about, if it persists, it can be a sign of something more serious going on in your body and should not be ignored.

In some instances, breast itching can be associated with more alarming conditions like inflammatory breast cancer and Paget’s disease of the breast. It is thus crucial for women to be aware of when an otherwise common symptom crosses the line and requires medical attention. While it is no secret that breasts often cause discomfort due to issues like poorly fitting bras and back pains, itching is becoming an alarming symptom for a number of women.

This awareness is evidenced by the rising search engine results for words such as “itchy breast.” The searches, which also include phrases such as “one itchy nipple” and “itching below breast,” tend to peak during times such as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, where there is greater awareness of possible symptoms.

Unsplash

While breast itching is generally considered harmless, health experts stress that recurring itch, noticeable changes, and unusual sensations that are unlike the usual feeling should not be taken lightly. In addition to this, there is the inconvenience of having an itch in a rather sensitive part of your body.

Dr. Tim Woodman, Medical Director for Cancer Services at Bupa UK Insurance, explains that occasional itching in the breast area is not unusual and often has straightforward explanations.

“It’s rare for itchy breasts to be a symptom of breast cancer,” Woodman said, “but if you have a patch of skin on or around your breasts that you find yourself regularly scratching, it’s always worth getting it checked by a health professional.”

Unsplash

As stated above, while most common causes of itchy breasts are ether skin conditions or allergies, there are two rare forms of breast cancer that may include itching as a symptom:

  • Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC): IBC is a rare and aggressive form of this disease that may also bring noticeable changes to the skin, such as redness, swelling, warmth, and persistent itching, according to the Cleveland Clinic. There may also be feelings of breast heaviness, tenderness, or a sudden change in size.
  • Paget’s disease of the breast: Paget’s disease of the breast is another rare form of breast cancer that “causes scaly or crusty skin on the nipple. The affected area may slowly grow to involve the skin around the nipple, called the areola,” according to the Mayo Clinic. This condition, different from Paget’s disease of the bone, “refers to breast cancer in the nipple,” and may cause itching, redness, flaking, or burning of the skin.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, about 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. In 2026 alone, an estimated 321,910 women and 2,670 men are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

Unsplash

Because of these concerning numbers, doctors stress the importance of paying attention to any unusual symptoms, especially those that occur alongside changes in breast tissue.

The Mayo Clinic reports that symptoms include:

  • A breast lump or thickened area of skin that feels different from the surrounding tissue
  • A nipple that looks flattened or turns inward
  • Changes in the color of the breast skin. In people with white skin, the breast skin may look pink or red. In people with brown and Black skin, the breast skin may look darker than the other skin on the chest or it may look red or purple
  • Change in the size, shape or appearance of a breast
  • Changes to the skin over the breast, such as skin that looks dimpled or looks like an orange peel
  • Peeling, scaling, crusting or flaking of the skin on the breast

While these symptoms are often linked to non-cancerous conditions, medical professionals stress that getting them checked is the safest way to rule out anything serious.

“Advances in breast cancer screening allow healthcare professionals to diagnose breast cancer earlier. Finding the cancer earlier makes it much more likely that the cancer can be cured. Even when breast cancer can’t be cured, many treatments exist to extend life,” the Mayo Clinic writes.

7 subtle signs you’re going through a deep inner shift

Let’s face it: there’s a certain type of inner shift that nobody really teaches you how to deal with. It’s not a mid-life crisis, and it’s certainly not a lightning bolt of an epiphany that strikes you like a bolt of lightning out of the sky. It’s much more subtle than that. It’s more like a tide rolling in. One day you wake up and you look around and you see that the things that once kept you up at night—social climbing, the need to always be “right,” the need to buy things to prove yourself—are just not as sharp as they once were.

It’s a little disorienting, to be honest. You might think to yourself, “Am I losing my edge? Am I getting old?” But if you lean into that, you’ll find that it’s not about losing anything. In fact, it’s about gaining clarity that you could not have achieved when you’re younger and busier. It’s the process of finally fitting into your own skin.

If you’re feeling as though the world is getting smaller and deeper, you’re not alone. This is what that looks like in real life.

1. Your relationship with “stuff” changes

We spend the first half of our lives gathering. We gather things like degrees, professional titles, and a lot of physical things to prove to the world that we’ve “made it.” But at a certain point, that starts to feel less like a badge of honor and more like a ball and chain.

You may find yourself standing in a closet full of clothing or a garage full of gear and feeling a strange impulse to just…let it all go. It’s not about becoming a monk or a hardcore minimalist. It’s just a matter of realizing that your identity is not wrapped up in your stuff. When you stop trying to prove your worth to the world through your stuff, you stop being a slave to the “upgrade.” There is a huge freedom that comes with realizing that the guy or girl across the street doesn’t actually care that you’re driving a Mercedes, and even more importantly, that you don’t care if they care or don’t care, if you know what I mean.

2. Quiet is no longer boring

Remember back when you were in your twenties? Silence was something to be avoided. We filled every void with music, television, or a night out on the town. But as this inner change begins to take place, you will find that noise is becoming very bothersome to you.

You may find that you are becoming more protective of your energy levels. That noisy restaurant that once was the place to be now becomes a source of a headache. You find yourself craving the quiet of a coffee shop in the morning, the sound of the wind rustling the trees, or the simple pleasure of a drive with the radio off. This is not being antisocial; it’s being choosy. You are at last understanding the value of the quiet: it’s full of the things you need to hear.

3. The past becomes a teacher, not a haunt

Most of us are burdened with a heavy backpack of “should haves” and “could haves.” Old arguments or decisions made a decade ago are replayed in your mind. Yet, in this stage, the pain begins to dissipate.

You think about past loves or past career choices, but instead of the pain of regret, you experience a sense of distant empathy. You start to see yourself in the past as a person who simply did the best they could with what they knew back then. The need to be the “hero” of your story begins to dissipate, and you are comfortable simply being the narrator. Being at peace with the past doesn’t mean you enjoy what happened in the past; it simply means you are no longer trying to change what is no longer changeable.

4. A deep pull towards the real and the grounded

There’s a certain kind of “settling” that goes on during this time. There’s a certain kind of attraction to things that are tangible and slow. Some people find it in gardening, some people find it in woodworking, some people find it in cooking, some people find it in just walking.

It is an attraction to the rhythm of the natural world. In a world that is increasingly digital and everything is fast and fake, there is something healing about things that take time to grow. You are no longer seeking the “next big thing”; you are seeking the “current small thing.” You are no longer trying to get away from your life; you are actually seeking to be in your life.

5. Sleep and rest become sacred

Sleep was something we thought was a luxury or even a waste, a product of laziness. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” we’d say. But as you move into this new, introspective place, you realize that was a lie.

You start to listen to your own body with a level of respect that you may never have had before. You realize that a poor night’s sleep can make you short-tempered and change your outlook on things. Your dreams may even become more vivid, as if your subconscious is finally getting a chance to talk to you, since you’ve been talking over it for the rest of the time.

6. You no longer try to control the uncontrollable

One of the most exhausting aspects of being a human is the idea that we can prevent horrible things from happening if we just worry enough. We live in a perpetual state of future anxiety.

As you get into this new place, though, you stop doing that. You still plan and you still care, but you don’t panic anymore. You start to accept the fact that life is going to do what life is going to do, and you start to accept the fact that you’ve survived 100% of the horrible days so far. You start to accept the fact that no matter what the future is, you’ll likely find a way to deal with it when you get there. That’s probably the single biggest factor in finding peace.

7. The beauty of the mundane

When the big, loud goals begin to lose their luster, the small things begin to shine like beacons. You might even find yourself touched by a decent cup of tea, the light on a brick wall, or a genuine conversation with a neighbor.

You become more aware, and realize that you’re no longer just passing through your life, but are, in fact, present for your life. You begin to understand that the “good life” isn’t waiting for you at the end of a promotion or a vacation, but in the crevices of your ordinary Tuesday.

How to live through the change

This is not a medical condition or a problem to fix. It is an evolution. So, if you are feeling these things happening, the best thing you can do is get out of your own way.

Stop saying sorry for your “no.” If you don’t want to go to the party, don’t go. Your energy is a finite resource, and you need to spend it on people and things that actually matter to you.

Clear the clutter. If your environment is feeling heavy, clear it. Your house is supposed to be a place where you can breathe, not a museum for things you used to be into.

Be patient with the “old” feelings. If a feeling that happened to you twenty years ago is suddenly surfacing, just leave it there. You don’t have to analyze it to death. You don’t have to make a story about it. You just have to acknowledge that it is there and then move on.

Touch the ground. Literally. Get outside, put your hands in the dirt, or just walk around barefoot on the grass. It helps to quiet the brain.

Unsplash

Conclusion

In our society, we’re obsessed with the idea that “growth” is defined by “more.” We’re taught that to be more, to be better, we need more money, more followers, more achievements to add to our trophy case.

But the greatest growth is about less. Less noise. Less ego. Less of the things that don’t really nourish our soul. It’s almost like our inner world is finally turning down the static on the radio to turn up the music.

If you’re becoming more quiet, less engaged with the “hustle,” it might feel like you’re losing your spark. But what if I told you that what’s really happening is that you’re not losing your spark, you’re just replacing the flickering flame of the candle with the reliable heat of the fire. You’re moving away from the energy that will inevitably burn out and towards the energy that will sustain you for the long haul.

So, if you’re feeling a little more introspective and a little less “on” lately, don’t worry. You’re not disappearing. You’re just finally opening your eyes to see the world—and yourself—for what it really is.

WWE star makes huge claim about Trump’s assassination attempt and points at key detail

During Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024, prior to the presidential elections he won, the now president of the US was shot at by a 20-year-old man named Thomas Crooks.

The president wasn’t injured with any life-threatening injuries but was only hit in the ear. Sadly, Crooks claimed the live of a volunteer fire chief. Two other people were wounded in the incident in which Crooks fired eight rounds from an AR-15-style rifle from a nearby building’s roof.

“For 15 seconds, time stood still,” Trump told the crowd. “This vicious monster unleashed evil. The villain did not succeed in his goal.”

Trump was “fine and being checked out at a local medical facility,” a spokesperson said at the time.

In his inauguration speech, Trump said, “I was saved by God to make America great again.”

However, following the shooting, the FBI said they had no, or little, information concerning the shooter, who was apprehended shortly after the shooting. However, there has been speculation that they did not give out information concerning Crooks and the event itself.

Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images

Rep. Pat Fallon from Texas, speaking to The National News Desk, said that they, as a task force, were not given certain information, even though they were meant to look into the assassination attempt.

“We definitely got stonewalled,” Fallon said. “When we finally got answers that we thought were fully forthright, now it seems like they weren’t.”

The investigation, however, revealed that the event was preventable.

Among those raising doubts about what really happened on the day of Trump’s assassination attempt is Jesse Ventura, the former WWE star and Minnesota governor, who sparked controversy by questioning a key detail of the 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

During an interview with Piers Morgan, Ventura suggested the incident may have been staged.

Known for his past interest in conspiracy topics—especially from his show Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura—he surprised Morgan by describing Trump’s near-death experience as what wrestlers call a “blade job.”

In professional wrestling, a “blade job” refers to a performer deliberately causing themselves to bleed to make an injury look more dramatic and convincing. While it’s meant purely for entertainment in WWE, Jesse Ventura suggested the same idea could apply to the shooting at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in July 2024.

Trump had been speaking to the crowd when he was struck on the ear by a bullet after turning to examine a chart on the stage. Secret Service agents immediately attended to the scene. Trump was later seen in Wisconsin with a bandage on his ear.

During the interview, Morgan noted Trump’s defiance after being attacked, to what Ventura said, “Oh yeah right, right, right, you ever heard of a blade job?” When asked if he thought the assassination attempt was “fake,” Ventura added: “I don’t know, where’s his scar today?”

Morgan then reminded the MMA fighter of the death of the former volunteer fire chief, who was struck by a bullet. Ventura went on to say, “I don’t know, come on Piers, you’re going to tell me this guy’s a big hero now?” When Morgan pressed further, Ventura replied sharply: “Then he accomplished what he wanted out of you guys.”

When asked what he’d say to Trump face-to-face, Ventura said he’d “rather not” speak to him, explaining, “He has no courage. He never has. There’s always one guy who will start the fight, and then hold your coat. That’s Donald Trump.”

Ventura was born in Minneapolis and has had a long and varied career in different fields. He initially served in the United States Navy’s Underwater Demolition/SEAL Teams during the Vietnam War. He later joined professional wrestling. From 1975 to 1986, he wrestled under the alias Jesse “the Body” Ventura, portraying an evil character.

Following his retirement from wrestling, Ventura continued working for the WWF/WWE, this time as a commentator. He was later inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004. He was also involved in acting and appeared in popular movies such as Predator and The Running Man.

Ventura ventured into politics in 1991 when he became the mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, a position he held for four years. However, his biggest political breakthrough came in 1998 when he ran for governor of Minnesota, winning under the Reform Party despite competing against both Democratic and Republican candidates.

However, he distanced himself from the Reform Party and finished his term as a member of the Independence Party. While serving as governor, Ventura implemented tax reforms, lowered income taxes, and was involved in building the METRO Blue Line light rail system. He chose not to run for a second term and finished his stint in 2003. He continued to be an active participant in politics through books, TV appearances, and political endorsements, including supporting the Green Party in 2020 and the Democratic Party in 2024.

Hidden PFAS in toilet paper linked to cancer risk: 6 types to be aware of

For most of us, toilet paper is not even a blip on the radar screen. It’s the ultimate “invisible” essential, until, of course, it runs out. So, learning that the rolls in your bathroom might have ties to some not-so-great chemicals, well, that’s a bit of a curveball.

But there’s a scientific reason why researchers are looking into this. It seems that some toilet paper out there has PFAS, or what’s sometimes called “forever chemicals,” which means they just don’t go away. That’s not to say that the rolls in your bathroom right now are a health risk or anything, but rather that an unremarkable aspect of our lives has become part of a bigger, more complex story.

The point of all of this, however, isn’t to try and freak everyone out, but rather to consider the facts, determine what, if anything, we should be worried about, and what we should do about it.

How toilet paper joined the PFAS conversation

This is not the result of a social movement; it is the result of a lab. Scientists studied wastewater samples and realized something unusual. Certain types of PFAS were showing up in the sewage. As they back-tracked to determine the origin, toilet paper came into the picture.

A study conducted in 2023 by the University of Florida analyzed rolls from North America, Europe, and Africa. The researchers detected measurable levels of fluorinated compounds in the rolls. The concern, however, was not the presence of these chemicals but the method by which they were being “disposed of.”

While a jacket or a pan might be used and then stored, toilet paper is used and then immediately disposed of. It goes right into the water system, which was not designed to filter out these kinds of molecules. Eventually, millions of households’ worth of toilet paper can make up a large portion of the PFAS in the sewage sludge.

The interesting thing is, these chemicals are not always intentionally added. Sometimes, they are inadvertently added during the manufacturing process, recycled paper pulp, or even machine lubricants in the factory.

Now, let’s get a little more specific. PFAS is a huge category of chemicals, with thousands of different varieties. While some, like PFOA, are associated with serious health problems, such as increased risk of cancer or suppressed immune systems, this risk level is completely dependent on how you are exposed.

The biggest risk with toilet paper, however, is not your skin at all. Most health experts, including those at the EWG, observe that skin absorption of PFAS is very, very low. The big culprits in human exposure are contaminated drinking water and food packaging.

Therefore, while these chemicals are noted in the product, the risk level as a result of using the product is low. The problem lies in the environmental build-up. Since these PFAS do not degrade, they accumulate in our soil and water forever.

The bigger picture: Life after the flush

But the real story begins when you push the handle. When the PFAS is introduced into the wastewater treatment, it is frequently included in “biosolids” (treated sewage sludge). It is frequently used as fertilizer for industrial farms.

This is the cycle: the chemicals go from the paper to the water, to the soil, and even into the food we might one day be eating. It is the environmental impact in slow motion, showing the effect our daily choices can have on our footprint.

Recycled vs. Bamboo: Are “eco” options safer?

If we try to do the right thing for the planet, we assume that using recycled or bamboo paper, as opposed to traditional wood pulp, is a get out of jail free card, so to speak, in terms of trees and carbon footprints. But in terms of chemical purity, there are a number of issues, some of which are a little ironic.

The Recycled Paper Paradox: While recycled toilet paper can be a fantastic option for the circular economy, it can be a “magnet” for unwanted chemicals. Consider what we put in the recycling bin. Glossy magazines, shipping labels, and thermal cash register receipts can all make their way into the recycling bin. These items can have BPA or PFAS to make them water-resistant or printable. If we mash them up into pulp, we can end up with unwanted microscopic chemicals in the finished product. Unless a company has extremely stringent filtration, your “eco-friendly” option could have more of these chemicals in it than virgin wood pulp.

The Bamboo Factor: While bamboo itself is considered a miracle crop because of its incredible growth rate and low water requirements, once the bamboo is cut, it must then be processed into soft, white paper. The safety of the finished product, however, rests entirely in the idea of a “closed-loop” factory. If the company uses harsh chemical solvents or even elemental chlorine to leach the difficult bamboo fibers, then we’re right back to square one. To get the full benefits of bamboo, we must find companies that emphasize mechanical processing over chemical-based techniques.

How to shop smarter: Products to watch

But when it comes time to fill the bathroom, things get a little fuzzy. While the peer-reviewed studies cited in this conversation so far haven’t mentioned any specific brands, further independent tests have tried to fill in those blanks.

It is, of course, absolutely essential to take these results with a grain of salt, as most of these tests are merely a series of spot checks, not exhaustive tests of a wide variety of brands. Take, for instance, a 2023 report conducted by Mamavation, in partnership with Environmental Health News, where 17 different products were sent to an EPA-certified lab to test for total fluorine, a chemical which is a common indicator of PFAS.

The levels found were generally low, in the range of 10 to 35 parts per million, which Environmental Health News indicates is a level at which these chemicals are “unlikely to be added on purpose, but are instead accidental contaminants from the manufacturing process.”

The “caution list” from limited testing

Within that particular screen of 17 brands, four of these products were shown to have detectable levels of fluorine. This doesn’t mean all rolls of these brands have fluorine in them; however, it is a reminder of how contamination can seep in.

Charmin Ultra Soft: As a major conventional brand, it is placed in this category based on those initial screening tests.

Seventh Generation 100% Recycled: Even green-rated brands are not spared. The company notes that because they use recycled paper, there’s a chance that any impurities in the original source material (such as old inks or coatings) may be found in their final product, too.

Tushy & Who Gives a Crap (Bamboo): Both brands were found in the limited fluorine screening tests. Who Gives a Crap has taken this situation in stride, noting on their site under their Transparency section: “Through our regular testing, we have found some trace amounts of organic fluorine… we won’t stop there! We are sooo committed to investigating where this contamination is coming from.”

These disclosures don’t settle the question, but they do confirm that concerns about contamination are a very real problem for manufacturers, not a purely hypothetical one.

Two categories to approach with extra care

Aside from the names themselves, you can generally protect yourself by being aware of two general categories of chemicals that often cause problems in safety standards such as the 2025 Green Seal GS-1 Standard:

The “Extra” Rolls: This category includes anything heavily scented or treated with lotions. These additives are not really necessary and can include hidden chemicals. The Green Seal standard even bans these kinds of additives in sanitary paper to avoid these risks.

The “Vague” Brands: If a company does not discuss their recycling contamination control or their whitening process, then it might be time to go elsewhere. Transparency is the only guarantee of safety.

What’s the safe bet?

If you want to play it safe, the strongest advice you can follow is this: look for the most basic products available. The current gold standard is trending towards Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) processes. This is a big deal, as the World Health Organization (WHO) has pointed out that previous chlorine bleaching processes have resulted in the creation of Dioxins – a type of toxic by-product.

The moral of this story is this: take a look at those with clear labels and a fragrance-free guarantee, and those with vague promises and luxury add-ons, and think of those as less safe options. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about choosing a brand that is working hardest to be perfect.

Conclusion

Toilet paper is not exactly something we ever thought we’d have to go around “auditing” in terms of safety, and learning that this is another contributing factor to this worldwide problem of PFAS chemicals in our environment is just another thing to add to the list of worries, right? However, let’s keep in mind that this is just a small piece of a gigantic worldwide puzzle, and this is not the entire picture.

The most balanced advice, in this case, would be: Don’t panic, but stay informed. You are not going to change the worldwide chemical situation by changing your type of toilet paper, but you can help change your personal household’s contribution to this situation. Going with simpler, less processed products is a classic example of a “low effort, high reward” situation. It’s a small change, but if millions of people are making this change, then this will start to change the market.

But until that time, a little bit of information and awareness is a big help in keeping your house and the world a little cleaner.

Clearing throat phlegm the safe way: proven methods that help

That tickle in the back of your throat and the constant need to clear it. The general grossness of the mucus just… sitting there. If you’re experiencing this, rest assured: you’re not crazy. And you’re definitely not alone.

Chronic throat phlegm is one of those symptoms that is very simple in theory but ends up being ridiculously difficult to overcome. Most people think it’s some kind of infection and look for either antibiotics or other heavy-duty medication. The thing is: most of the time, it’s not an infection but your body telling you something’s a little out of whack.

The good news is that once you figure out exactly what is causing the problem, finding a solution is not nearly so difficult.

First, what is throat phlegm?

Phlegm is just a form of mucus. In fact, phlegm is the good guy. It’s a protective mechanism that catches dust and junk for you.

Phlegm is supposed to simply go down your throat without you ever even realizing it. The problem arises when your system overproduces it, or when it gets thick and cannot go down your throat as easily. And that’s when you’ll know it’s there—stuck in your throat, making you want to cough or swallow every five seconds. It’s not usually there for no reason, though. There’s usually something that caused it.

The most common causes

1. Post-nasal drip

Post-nasal drip is the usual cause in the vast majority of cases. This occurs when mucus from your nose or sinuses runs down the back of your throat, which is frequently brought on by allergies, weather changes, or a little sinus irritation.
Common symptoms are: worse when you wake up, thin, clear-ish mucus, constant throat clearing, itchy eyes or nose.

Many people do not even realize that their sinuses are the cause because they don’t really feel “stuffy.”

2. Silent reflux (LRP)

Unlike the classic version, this type doesn’t always produce heartburn. Instead, the stomach acid rises high enough to touch your throat.
Common clues: hoarseness or raspy voice, a “lump in the throat” sensation, made worse by eating or lying down.

3. Dehydration

When you’re dehydrated, your mucus gets thick and sticky. That in itself causes the sensation of phlegm being “stuck.”
The signs of dehydration are: thick, gluey mucus, dry mouth, relief after drinking water.

This is the simplest thing to cure, yet most people are totally unaware that dehydration is what causing it.

4. Medication side effects

Some meds can actually increase mucus production or dry out your throat. Look for: certain blood pressure medications, hormones, certain antidepressants.

If this problem began after you filled a new prescription, this may be your answer.

5. Smoking or chronic lung issues

If you have a persistent cough and a long-term cough (especially if you are a smoker), then a check-up is in order. Warning signs: a cough every day for months, discolored or thick phlegm, difficulty breathing.

This is not as common, but it is not something you should ever ignore.

What most people miss

Throat phlegm is real; it is not “all in your head.” It is simply not a cause for alarm in most cases. This is why “blunt force” treatments rarely work and can sometimes make things worse.

What actually helps

1. Hydration

If you only take one piece of advice from me, let it be this: Water thins out the mucus so your body can expel it more easily. When it is thinned out, it does not pool or stick around.

How to do it right: drink steadily throughout the day (don’t chug it all at once), shoot for 2-3 liters based on your activity level, drink warm liquids like herbal tea, broth, or water. Warm liquids are good because they relax the muscles in your throat and help the mucus go along.

What to cut back on: too much caffeine and alcohol as both of these will dry out your body and make the phlegm stickier than usual.

By the way, that dairy product rumor about increasing mucus production? Not exactly supported by science. But if it does make your throat feel filmy, trust your instincts.

2. Saltwater gargling: Old School, but it works

This is the reason why your grandmother recommended this. Saltwater gargling is the best way to reduce the swelling caused by the fluid loss in your throat tissues. This is how to do it: mix one-half teaspoon of salt with warm water, gargle it for 30 seconds, spit it out. Do not drink it. Do this several times a day if it is bothering you. This is not a cure, but it is incredibly relieving.

3. Humidity matters more than you think

Dry air turns mucus into glue. This is why it’s always worse at night or in a heated office. What helps: running a humidifier while you sleep, setting indoor humidity at 40-60%, even just placing a bowl of water near your radiator will help.

Solve the root of the problem

This is how you get rid of it for good.

If it’s allergies: Try a saline nasal rinse (like a Neti Pot), use an antihistamine, avoid allergens like dust or pollen.

If it’s silent reflux: Don’t eat 2-3 hours before bedtime, prop your head up with an extra pillow, avoid “triggers” like mint, chocolate, or booze.

If it’s dehydration: Set a “water reminder” on your phone, drink more during your workout.

If it’s your meds: talk to your doctor about alternatives but don’t stop your meds on your own.

What doesn’t work

The internet loves a “quick fix,” but most of them are junk.

Apple cider vinegar for reflux: It actually burns your throat more if you already have a raw throat.

“Drying out” the mucus: It actually makes your mucus more sticky. You want to thin it, not get rid of it.

Essential oils: There’s no scientific evidence that they help stop phlegm. In fact, for some, the smell of these oils causes your throat to constrict.

Dairy products as the “evil” cause: It can actually change your mouth sensation, but it’s not actually producing more phlegm.

Unsplash

When to see a doctor

Most of the time, some more water and a humidifier will cure your problem. However, pay attention to your body. See a doctor if you have: blood in your phlegm, hoarseness that won’t go away in a few weeks, trouble swallowing, losing weight for no reason, symptoms that last longer than two months, if you’ve tried the basics and nothing is budging, get an expert opinion.

Why this is so frustrating

Let’s be real: chronic phlegm is a mental drain, it’s distracting and constant, and it messes with your voice and sleep.

You can’t “see” it, so it’s hard to explain to others. Since it feels like such a “small” problem, it’s even more annoying when it won’t go away. The reality is that your throat, your sinuses, and your stomach are all connected. A “one-size-fits-all” solution is not going to work for you.

A smarter approach: Spot the patterns, stop guessing and start observing. Ask yourself: when is it worst? After coffee? First thing in the morning? Is the mucus clear and thin, or thick and yellow? Does it get better when you drink more water? By tracking this for a week, you’ll know more than a Google search could ever hope to provide. For instance: morning issues usually mean post-nasal drip. Post-meal issues usually mean reflux. Thick gunk usually means you’re just dehydrated.

Conclusion

Honestly, it’s super annoying to have to clear your throat every five seconds, but it’s rarely ever a situation that actually causes you to freak out. Most of the time, it’s just your body’s way of reacting to something totally fixable, whether it’s because the air is too dry, some random irritation, or because you need to drink more water. You don’t need super-strong meds to fix it; it’s more about those little, boring habits of making sure you’re hydrated, grab a humidifier, and actually pay attention to it. If you simply stop and pay attention to what your body is telling you, the solution is usually more obvious than you’d have thought.
