Ruth, my eight-year-old daughter, was in a hurry to finish her letter to Santa. After all, she’s been a good child all year round and she most definitely deserved a beautiful gift. But when I read her letter and learned she was expecting Jolly Old St. Nick to bring her heart-shaped earrings just like the ones daddy gave to her nanny, my heart sank.

The holidays, especially Christmas, have always been about tradition in our family. One of those little rituals that made all the difference and lifted our holiday spirit was Ruth’s letters to Santa. She would always put them in the fridge after finishing them, believing that was how they traveled to the North Pole.

This year, I waited for her to write the letter and go to bed before I could read it and buy whatever she asked for. But when I went through the words, I felt like my entire world collapsed.

“Dear Santa, this year, I love the same heart-shaped earring my dad gave to my nanny. Thank you!”

This didn’t make sense. Why would my husband give the nanny jewelry?

“Brian,” Jerry said quietly, “my best friend who died of cancer 14 years ago.”

It was then that Gloria revealed that Brian was her brother.

“Before he died, Brian made me promise to be there for his sister,” Jerry explained, and I realized that was why he was so pushy about giving her the job.

“He left me a box of gifts for her,” Jerry said. “He wanted her to have pieces of him for milestones in her life—like birthdays, special occasions, moments where she needed to feel he was still with her. Brian planned all of it while he was undergoing chemo.”

It turned out Jerry was only fulfilling a promise he gave years ago.

“Do you know that Ruth is asking from Santa to give her heart-shaped earrings like the ones you gave to Gloria, Jerry?” I asked my husband. “I read her letter and that’s why I though there was something between you to. You should have told me the truth before you made this mess.”

Both Jerry and Gloria apologized for keeping a secret from me.

I wasn’t mad, I just wanted them both to promise there will be no more secrets.

I also asked from Jerry to speak to our daughter and explain to her why he gave the nanny jewelry. It turned out Ruth loved the story.

And of course, she got earrings from Santa just like the ones she wanted.

While my husband was dying in the hospital, a stranger told me to set up a hidden camera to expose the truth

“Stage four cancer… just weeks to live…” These words echoed in my head as my world turned upside down. My husband was dying. The diagnosis was dull. I was crushed.

When we saw Dr. Matthews about Eric’s condition, his face said it all. I knew something was terribly wrong. And that’s when he told us that Eric had stage four cancer and only weeks to live.

The news hit us like a ton of bricks.

Eric needed to stay at the hospital, and in the days to come, I spent most of my time there, being supportive and assuring him everything was going to be alright.

I cried my heart out at the thought that Eric could leave this world, but the doctor told me I should be prepared for the worse.

As I was pacing the hospital halls, I felt like I needed some fresh air so I went out and found myself sitting on one of the benches. And that’s when SHE appeared, a nurse in her late 40s. Wearing navy scrubs and shoes worn by someone who spent long hours on their feet, she sat next to me.

“Set up a camera in his ward,” she whispered. “He’s not dying.”

“What!?” I yelled. “What are you talking about?”

“Just do what I say, you deserve to know the truth.”

And then she was gone.

Her words planted the seed of suspicion in me. I was torn between trusting my husband or violating his privacy. Eventually, I convinced myself that if there was any truth behind the words of that nurse, I deserved to know it.

That evening, as I was typing my credit card number and pressed “order,” my hands trembled. Once I purchased the tiny camera, I caught myself whispering “I’m sorry,” not aware who I was apologizing to, Eric or myself.

Two days later, when Eric was scheduled for a CT scan, I went into his hospital room and set up the tiny camera.

Not knowing what to expect, I played the footage the following morning.

What I saw broke me. A woman wearing a sleek leather coat entered Eric’s room and he jumped out of his bed. The pain that he described as unbearable seemed to have vanished the moment he saw that woman.

They hugged and kissed, and their body language was intimate and familiar. Sadly, I couldn’t hear what they were saying, I just saw her handing him some papers that he placed under his mattress.

All that time I believed my husband was dying, he was seeing someone else behind my back, someone with whom he was obviously planning something big.

I knew I needed solid proof of whatever Eric and that woman were doing, so the following night, I stayed at the hospital without him knowing.

Around 9 pm, the woman came again. She walked through the hallways as though she owned the place. Confident and unbothered. Once she entered the room, I stood by the door and listened. What I heard was the ultimate betrayal. Something I would never expect from the man I was married to for 15 long years.

It turned out their plan was to fake his death, and once he was declared dead, the insurance money would be transferred offshore.

“This was too easy,” Eric said. “You should have seen my wife today. She’s already planning my funeral. So concerned and loving, I almost feel sorry for her, poor thing,” Eric said through laughter. “And I have to admit, Dr. Matthews played his part well, although his fake diagnosis cost me a little fortune.”

I was heartbroken. The cruelty of Eric’s words cut deeper than a blade.

Luckily, I caught their conversation on my phone, ready to share it with the world.

The following day, I called everyone I knew, family members, colleagues, friends. I told them Eric’s condition worsened and he wanted everyone at the hospital, to see them for one last time. Then, I went to him and waited. As those people I called started arriving one by one, Eric could sense something wasn’t right.

His face went pale, because he could sense his plan could crumble.

Once I made sure everyone was there, I said, “Before you say your final goodbyes, there is something I want you to know about Eric.”

He looked at me in confusion. “Diana, what are you doing, what is going on?”

I didn’t bother to answer. I just played the recording.

Shocked, his family and friends started murmuring in disbelief. His mom started crying. “Oh, Eric, how could you do this to us? To your wife?”

She was so shocked and so disappointed in her son, that she almost collapsed.

“Don’t worry, honey,” I said. “The police are on their way.”

At that moment, I spotted Eric’s mistress. When she realized something odd was going on, she tried to run away, but she didn’t even got to the elevator before she got arrested alongside my husband who I thought was dying, and Dr. Matthews.

I filed for divorce the following day, glad I hadn’t fallen victim to my cruel husband who convinced me he was dying.

Relieved, I returned to the bench in front of the hospital. After some time, the nurse who saved me from being betrayed showed up. I thanked her for warning me about Eric and she explained that she overheard him speaking to his mistress during a night shift.

“You saved me from a different kind of grief,” I said.

Losing my husband, not to cancer, but to his lies, felt like the best thing that has ever happened to me.

“Every day after school for 10 years, I was on the set of Married, with Children, which is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up,” she told Esquire.

“There were a lot of times my dad would say, ‘Meg, why don’t you go and help with the craft services room over there? This is just a little off-color for your 11-year-old eyes,’” she said of the days when she and her dad were getting along just perfectly.

Although she was familiar with how the industry worked, Meghan reportedly never wanted her story to be a cliché and she refused to be known as the L.A. girl who dreamed of becoming an actress. Entering the hospital room, Mark was fuming. “What is this Lindsay?” he asked, and I was totally unaware of what he was talking about.

“Mark, is everything okay?”

“Of course it’s not. These can’t be my kids. Did you cheat on me?” he asked as I could hear his voice breaking. “You tricked me, Lindsay. You didn’t tell me you were carrying girls.”

“Mark, why does that matter? They are beautiful and they are perfectly healthy,” I said, still confused by his words and his ridiculous behavior.

“This isn’t what I wanted. I needed boys so they could carry on a legacy and my name.”

As he uttered those words, my heart crushed into a million pieces. I looked at my girls who were sleeping peacefully, unaware that their father rejected them.

At that moment, I was looking at a man I didn’t recognize. Mark never acted like that before, not once.

A DNA test brought me to my brother, and he remembers the past I never lived

That DNA test I took by chance taught me one thing – that life would never be the same.

Being an only child meant I was kind of spoiled. My parents always showered me with gifts and attention and I loved the life I had.

The three of us made the perfect family, or at least that’s what I thought so.

On my 18th birthday, I decided to treat myself with a DNA test, the one that tells you if you’re certain percentage from Scandinavian ancestry or whatever. I took it just for fun, not realizing it will reveal a much deeper truth; one that was hard to swallow.

While I was waiting for the results, I kept refreshing my email.

“Honey, what are you so excited about?” I heard my mom yelling from downstairs.

“It’s nothing, mom, I’m just messing around,” I answered.

But when the results finally came, I was shocked. It said there was a close match with someone named Daniel. So close, that the results suggested he was my brother.

Certain it was just a mistake, I called the company’s helpline but they assured me the results were accurate.

Not knowing what to do, I decided to speak to the only person I trusted the most, and likely the only person who could provide me with something more about this revelation – my father.

The moment I heard his car pulling in the driveway, I rushed towards him. “Dad, do you have a second. There is something I want to ask you,” I said quietly, not knowing what to expect.

“Of course, son,” he said, as he gave me a hug.

“Dad, do you remember that DNA test I told you about?” I asked, as my dad nodded. “It turns out I have a brother, someone named Daniel.”

Before saying anything, my dad looked around, making sure mom was out of sight.

“Look son, let this be our little secret. Years ago, I had an affair,” my dad said while I listened in disbelief, knowing he wasn’t that kind of person. “Please don’t ever bring this topic again. If your mom find out, she’s leave me.”

I was stunned at his confession. He tried to convince me that our family’s happiness depended on my silence, and I agreed to let it go.

However, something deep down told me there was more to the story, and despite my dad’s pleas, I contacted Daniel though the social media.

He answered right away.

“Billy, is that really you?” he wrote, and it sounded as he already knew I existed, which confused my brain even more.

The following day we met at a cafe not far from my home. The moment I saw him I knew it was him, my brother, because it felt like I was looking at a mirror. We resembled one another so much.

“Hey, Billy, do you remember how much fun we had by the lake near our old house?” he asked me. “And how we threw stones in the water?”

Listening to him, I said to myself, “this guy is speaking nonsense.” However, as I didn’t want to be rude, I said i didn’t remember any of it because it never happened.

“What do you mean, buddy,” Daniel said. “We lived together until you were three or four, and then the house burnt down and our mom and dad died. You got adopted and I ended up in foster care.”

“But… but my dad says you are the affair child,” I said quietly.

“That’s not true Billy. I’m your real brother. Don’t you remember the fire?” he asked again.

One thing I was certain of was that I couldn’t be adopted. My mom and dad loved me too much to hide something like that from me. But why would Daniel lie?

When I returned home, I went straight to my dad’s office. I was aware I was violating his personal space, but I needed to learn the truth.

In one of the drawers, I found old documents.

It turned out that who I believe were my parents were actually the owners of the place that burned and killed my parents. They ignored complaints about defective wiring to avoid expensive repairs, and that was how the fire started.

In order to avoid lawsuits, they adopted me.

Reading through those documents made my world spun. My legs felt shaky and I could barely breath.

But still, I found the courage to confront who I believed were my mom and dad.

When they got home from work, I asked them about the fire.

“What fire?” my dad asked, as though he had no idea what I was talking about.

My mom started crying, but I avoided her glance.

They came up with a bunch of explanations; how they wanted to protect me and keep me safe. But I wasn’t willing to listen.

I went upstairs and packed all of my belongings, or at least what could fit in a single suitcase. I spent the night at Daniel’s place, and he assured me I could stay with him for as long as I wanted.

Had it not been for that seemingly harmless DNA test, I would have never learned the truth about my life.
