I booked a $2,000 rental for a group trip, but no one paid their share – so I took action

I was looking forward to the group trip my friends and I were about to take at a cozy cabin located on a sparkling lake. However, their excuses about paying their share almost cost us our friendship of many years.

Weekend getaways with my group of friends have always been something we have all cherished. Despite our hectic schedules, all eight of us did our best to make a room for three-day trips at least once a year.

This time, it was my turn to organize everything, and I was more than happy to make this trip the most memorable one.

After booking and paying upfront, I let my friends know they were supposed to pay me $250 each, which was a reasonable amount for that many days and for such a lovely cabin not away from the city.

They all said they were perfectly fine with the amount, assuring me they would send me the money as soon as possible, but as days passed by, they started coming up with a bunch of excuses.

“Sorry, Sarah, I need to have my car fixed, but I’ll pay you for the trip as soon as I can,” Marry texted me. Next was Brittany. “These student loans are killing me, can I pay for my share for the group trip with my next paycheck. I know you understand.”

Melissa’s text said she needed more time to cover her part.

Honestly, it felt strange. It was as though my friends did this on purpose.

But why? I started wondering if it was because of something I did, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t think of a reason for their behavior.

Weeks passed by and whenever I reminded them about the group trip and the money they were supposed to pay me back, they came up with a bunch of new reasons to ignore their responsibility.

So, I decided to teach them a lesson.

A day before the trip, I went to the supermarket and bought plenty of food, enough to feed an army. I got some marshmallows for the bonfire I was planning to set, a nice selection of wines, cheese, you name it.

On the day of the trip, I stocked the fridge and texted my friends that everything was ready for their arrival. I also told them I was getting back to the city to grab some more things. However, I locked the place and the garage and took the keys with me. Then I sat at my favorite coffee place and ordered latte.

As my friends arrived at the cabin one by one, they texted me, telling me they were waiting for me to open it. I told them I was on my way, while I was in fact enjoying my coffee.

When they realized I wasn’t going any time soon, their texts became more frequent.

“Why are you making us wait like this, Sarah,” one of them wrote. “It’s not fair that we keep waiting for you for that long,” the other one texted.

After I received a bunch of texts, I decided to drop the bomb.

“Girls, I’d be happy to come, but not before you pay your share for this group trip.”

All of a sudden, notifications of payments started rolling in. It was then that I got inside the car and drove to the cabin.

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when I got there. I wasn’t even sure if my friends would be willing to proceed with the weekend gateway, but at that point, I felt like I didn’t even care. They showed lack of respect for everything I did.

“Sarah, I’m sorry but…” Melissa started speaking, but I cut her off. I told them what they did was unfair and to my surprise, they all agreed I was right. One by one, they hugged me and told me they were truly sorry for not paying when they were supposed to.

“We didn’t mean to hurt you,” Brittany said.

I accepted their apologies and reminded them that the true friendship was built on trust.

At the end, the group trip was as fun as I imagined it would be the moment I booked the cabin.
