          A traditional favorite finds new life in modern dining

          A favorite restaurant is returning to the US after more than two decades away. The casual Mexican restaurant chain closed its last American locations in the early 2000s following financial problems and reputational damage. Since then, the brand has largely existed through frozen food products rather than sit-down restaurants.

          However, that has changed with the opening of a new Chi-Chi’s location in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, its first US restaurant since 2004.

          Rather than a nationwide rollout, the company is treating the location as a test to see whether the brand still appeals to modern diners in a restaurant market that has changed significantly since the chain’s peak.

          The development follows a new agreement between Hormel Foods, which owns the Chi-Chi’s trademarks, and Michael McDermott. The deal grants McDermott, the son of founder Marno McDermott, the rights to operate new restaurants under the Chi-Chi’s name.

          “I still have fond memories of growing up in the Chi-Chi’s restaurants that my father built throughout their time, instilling in me the passion and determination to pursue my own career in the restaurant industry,” McDermott said in a press release.

          “We have seen the impact our restaurant has had on individuals and families across the country and believe there is a strong opportunity to bring the brand back in a way that resonates with today’s consumer — an updated dining experience with the same great taste and Mexican flavor.”

          The new, updated menu McDermott posed with includes tacos, enchiladas, and chimichangas.

          Chi-Chi’s first opened back in Minnesota in 1975 but closed its doors in 2004 after a hepatitis A outbreak at a Pennsylvania location dealt the chain a blow it could not recover from. The outbreak, traced to raw green onions served in the restaurant’s complimentary salsa, got around 650 people sick, caused four deaths, and triggered hundreds of lawsuits. It remains the largest hepatitis A outbreak in US history and led to changes in national food safety standards.

          By that point, the company was already struggling. Chi-Chi’s had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2002 after years of declining sales, oversized and costly restaurant layouts, failed expansion attempts in cities like New York and San Diego, internal management problems, and shifting dining trends.

          Outback Steakhouse later purchased the Chi-Chi’s brand in a $40 million deal and shut down the remaining locations, converting many of them into Outback Steakhouse, Bonefish Grill, and other concepts owned by its parent company.

          In today’s world when the restaurant business is crowded, costs are higher and it’s more difficult to keep customers loyal than in decades past, the long-term outlook for Chi-Chi’s remains uncertain. Nostalgia by itself has not buoyed many current revivals. Even so, Chi-Chi’s return is notable as a calculated bid by a one-time national chain to make a comeback without forsaking the original identity that once defined it.

          For eight years, my husband, a gynecologist, treated my ‘chronic pain’ — until the truth was revealed

          It was then then I finally realized my husband was well aware about what was causing my pain, and for some reason, he decided not to do anything about it. My pain hadn’t been ignored by chance. No, it had been a conscious choice made by the person whom I loved and trusted with all my heart.

          And it was that certainty, more than the diagnosis itself, that took my breath away. My mind replayed every appointment, every report Javier had signed, every moment he asked me to be patient. At that moment, it dawned on me that my health and my marriage were caught up in a reality I could no longer escape.

          The operation took place that night, ran longer than anticipated, and the expression on the doctor’s face told me that everything had changed.

          They had discovered an old IUD that had been left inside me for years. It was what was causing pain and infection, and it wasn’t even in my records.

          And then all that fell apart. My husband denied it, tried to say it was a mistake, but the reports and ultrasounds showed he knew and did nothing. When I confronted him, he addressed me like a patient, not his wife. He tried to diminish my pain and discount my fear. That’s when I knew he never saw me as his equal.

          Tragic discovery: Missing 4-year-old found dead in toy chest

          Four-year-old Kache Wallis from Hurricane, Utah, was reported missing after his grandma put him to sleep in his bed but he wasn’t there the following morning. She looked for him everywhere and when she failed to find him, she alerted the authorities.

          Police searched the house and determined the boy wasn’t home after which a frantic search for Kache started. A number of local volunteers took part in it and a missing alert was issued while everyone prayed for the little one to be found safe and sound.

          Unfortunately, after a second search of the home, the boy was found dead inside a toy chest in his room.

          According to new reports, the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office have investigated the 4-year-old’s passing and determined his official cause of death was “positional asphyxiation.” They believe that Kache climbed into the chest and died of deprivation of oxygen. After family members were questioned, the boy’s death was ruled accidental.

          However, although the incident was ruled accidental, authorities used it to underline an important safety message. They warned that everyday household items can pose unexpected dangers to young children, especially storage or play items like toy chests and trunks.

          Curious children may see these as places to hide, without realizing the risks. Officials stressed that raising awareness isn’t about blame, but about helping prevent similar tragedies in the future.

          The City of Hurricane Police Department released a statement about the case and shared their sadness over the tragic incident. “Our sincerest condolences are sent to Kache and his family,” the statement read.

          I spent a couple of nights at my friend’s previous apartment and saw these unusual bumps

          Around a week or so ago, I asked my friend if I could use his old apartment while I was having mine renovated, and he agreed.

          However, only after a couple of days, I noticed strange bumps appear on my skin, especially my legs and my back. Since I hadn’t changed anything regarding my hygiene and used the same shampoo and took regular baths, I guessed it could be related to anything with the place.

          Before I could even afford getting to the doctor’s, I searched the net in hopes of learning what could be causing the itchy bumps, and everything pointed to bed bugs.

          Well, the place was rather old and the mattress was there for years. However, when I inspected it, I couldn’t find anything. Yet, I took some precautions and had the mattress on the balcony, leaving it on the sun for a day, and then I used multiple bed covers before I slept on it again. Sadly, not much had changed, and I was simply forced to sleep there for the remaining of the week.

          According to NHS, bed bugs are tiny insects that often live on furniture or bedding. While their bites don’t pose any health risks, they can be very itchy.

          A bed bug bite can make you itchy, uncomfortable, and keep you awake at night. They may also be difficult to distinguish from bites from other insects.

          These are some of the symptoms that can help you identify if the bites are from bed bugs. However, not every person experiences them, as many people don’t react at these bites at all.

          Red, itchy bumps – Bites from bed bugs appear as red bumps on the skin. Although don’t spread diseases, their bites are very itchy and irritating. While they won’t usually cause a rash, scratching too much can break the skin and lead to bleeding or a secondary infection.

          Bites on uncovered skin – Bed bugs usually feed on skin that is exposed during the night.

          I never expected helping a veteran could change everything

          If I’m being honest, at that time I was just constantly on the go. It was like everything was running on autopilot, and I wasn’t chasing any goals or looking toward the future, I was only trying to get from day to day.

          I was a single parent of two young children, working full-time at this tiny insurance office, making so little money that it barely covered our basic needs. But it was steady. Every day was pretty much the same: up before the sun, get the kids ready, sit in traffic, work all day, then hurry home to start all over again.

          I was exhausted, so much that it didn’t even cross my mind anymore. Days got hazy, and all I did to track time was given-to-do lists: meals, homework, bills. Even breaks weren’t really breaks. Whenever we sat down for lunch, we were usually playing catch-up on calls or paperwork.

          My mother pitched in when she could, even as she was exhausted from working hospital shifts. She would pick up the kids if I was running late, or she would drop off groceries when I was overwhelmed with work . I just felt like I was always one step away from everything coming crashing down.

          But I wasn’t seeking meaning or inspiration at that time in my life, because I thought I didn’t have the room to do that.

          Then, one night after grocery shopping, something apparently meaningless but odd happened. I was loading bags into my car in the cold, already stressed about bedtime and money, when I saw a man sitting off in a corner of the parking lot.

          He didn’t want money or anything. He was just sitting there quietly with this dog resting against him. The dog seemed calm and well taken care of, and that’s what caught my attention.

          He told me he was a veteran and that he hadn’t eaten since the day before. He only asked for some food, and honestly, I hesitated.

          I had kids to feed, and I could barely keep going. But then I saw him straightening the dog’s collar, making sure it was snug. He was hungry, but he was still looking out for his dog, and that got me.

          So I went back inside and bought him a hot meal, some water, and dog food. When I handed it to him, he thanked me, nothing dramatic, just real.

          I started driving home thinking that was it. Just a bit of quiet goodwill.

          A few weeks later, I was called at my boss’s office unexpectedly and fired immediately. No warning. I was terrified. Two kids, no savings.

          It turned out the man I helped had contacted a veterans organization to say thank you, and they sent a letter about my kindness and my work. I was told I was “inappropriate under the circumstances” and that I had “represented the company poorly” in the eyes of my boss.

          Later, when they learned I’d lost my job over it, they intervened. They didn’t just help fix the problem, but stood up for me.

          Long story short, that later turned into a job as a veterans advocate, helping them find support and stability. My life is very, very different now.

          I wasn’t trying to change anything that day. I was just being human. And all of a sudden, that made all the difference.

          Air Force Academy cadet, 19, discovered unresponsive in dormitory

          19-year-old US Air Force Academy cadet Avery Koonce was found unresponsive in her dormitory in early September 2024.

          According to the academy, first responders are called to the scene but were unable to revive her.

          “We lost an incredible teammate last night,” academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind said in a post shared on the social media. “While only with us for a short time, Avery positively impacted her unit, her intercollegiate team, and her class — her loss will be felt across USAFA. Our team is focused on providing support to Avery’s family, Cadet Squadron 38, the Track and Field team, and the entire Academy family.”

          According to an autopsy report from the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, Koonce died  of “paeniclostridium sordelli sepsis complicating parainfluenza laryngotraceobronchitis,” the New York Post reported.

          “In essence she died of untreated pneumonia,” forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, who reviewed the autopsy report, told the publication.

          The bacteria triggered sepsis in her lungs and intensified a preexisting respiratory infection, ultimately leading to her death, Daily Mail reported.

          Paeniclostridium sordellii is known to cause a toxic shock syndrome that can advance rapidly and become fatal. The organism was detected in both her bloodstream and her lungs.

          The report further noted that Koonce’s left lung “exhibited histologic evidence of acute inflammation.” She had been struggling with a severe cough in the days before her tragic passing.

          In other uncommon instances, this bacteria can also lead to pneumonia, endocarditis, arthritis, peritonitis, and myonecrosis, and it carries a mortality rate exceeding 70 percent.

          Koonce graduated from Thrall High School and was a member of the Air Force class of 2028 as well as part of the academy’s women’s track and field team.

          She is remembered as an “exceptional leader” and “talented athlete” whose dream was to become a pilot.

          “I was incredibly saddened to hear about the loss of USAFA Cadet Avery Koonce,” Texas Rep. Pete Sessions, who nominated her for the U.S. Air Force Academy, said in a statement. “It was my honor to nominate Cadet Koonce to the US Air Force Academy where she had begun her studies, planning to major in biology and minor in kinesiology with hopes of becoming a pilot physical therapist.”

          Michael J. Fox opens up about his journey with Parkinson’s and his hopes for the years to come

          After decades of battling Parkinson’s disease, actor Michael J. Fox returned to acting with a role many dubbed powerful.

          Fox was first diagnosed with the disease at the age of 29. It was a period in his life when he was at the peak of his career, so the condition, which he knew little about at the time, stood on his way of acting, forcing him to semi-retire.

          It took young Michael a lot of time to accept the reality, but he eventually decided to make the best out of his life despite the struggles the disease forced him to face.

          “Parkinson’s sucks, but it’s a great life, so thank you for it,” the actor said back in 2023 during the showing of the nonfiction film featuring his life. “Pity is a benign form of abuse. I can feel sorry for myself, but I don’t have time for that. There is stuff to be learned from this, so let’s do that and move on,” he continued.

          “My fans have basically given me my life. I wanted to give these people who have done so much for me my time and gratitude. It was great for me to hear from all of you.”

          Speaking to People, he opened up about his health and his future, saying, “I wake up and get the message of what the day is gonna be like, and I try to adjust to it.

          “I keep getting new challenges physically, and I get through it,” he continued. “I roll around in a wheelchair a lot, and it took some getting used to.”

          He explained that embracing a darker but amusing outlook on life allows him to move past uncomfortable situations that can surface in challenging discussions, according to the publication.

          Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Fox said his outlook on life has changed over the years. “After 35 years or something since I’ve been diagnosed, this is just my life, and I don’t think about it much,” he said.

          Recently, Fox stepped back into the spotlight with a role in Shrinking season 3 alongside Harrison Ford.

          The newly released trailer shows Fox’s character in a waiting room at a medical facility, seated next to Dr Paul Rhoades, played by Ford.

          When Fox’s character asks Paul why he’s there, Paul answers bluntly, “Parkinson’s.” Fox follows with a perfectly timed quip, joking that he’s only there for a haircut, prompting laughter between them, according to Variety.

          Fox’s casting reunites him with series co-creator Bill Lawrence, following their earlier collaboration on the ABC sitcom Spin City, where Fox starred for four seasons before leaving in 2000 as early Parkinson’s symptoms emerged.

          He later made a notable return to Lawrence’s work with a memorable two-episode guest arc on the medical comedy Scrubs in 2004.

          According to Variety, Fox personally called Bill Lawrence after finding out the show featured a character with Parkinson’s disease, asking why he hadn’t been asked to take part. Lawrence said he’d love for him to join the series.

          Lawrence himself later confirmed that Fox reached out after learning that Harrison Ford’s character was dealing with Parkinson’s — a storyline introduced in the first season.

          During the five years of staying out of acting, Fox focused on his Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which he founded in 2000. 

          In his 2020 memoir No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, Fox wrote that losing the ability to speak consistently posed a major obstacle for him as an actor, explaining that memorising lines had become increasingly difficult as his Parkinson’s symptoms progressed.

          Recently, he opened up about his health with People magazine. “I wake up and get the message of what the day is gonna be like, and I try to adjust to it,” Fox said. “I keep getting new challenges physically, and I get through it, I roll around in a wheelchair a lot, and it took some getting used to.

          “You take the good, and you seize it.”

          The Back to the Future star announced retirement from acting in 2020, but has since guess-starred on the Emmy-nominated series Shrinking‘s third season, playing a person with Parkinson’s.

          Michael J. Fox also opened up about his beautiful family, and his daughter Esmé, the youngest of his and Tracy Pollan’s four children, saying she looks much like him.

          “My littlest one, Esmé, is the most like me. She’s always reading a book, editing a movie on her computer, or dressing up; when we go on vacation, she writes a book about what she has seen,” he told Good Housekeeping, per ABC. “She’s got that curiosity and that joy that I had, in spite of some of the things I’ve had to deal with. And I still have that now. “

          On November 3, 2024, Esmé celebrated her 23rd birthday, and her dad posted a tribute on the social media, sharing a photo of her, which is something he doesn’t do often. “Esme, Happy birthday to our renaissance gal. You do it all. Your Dood loves you very much..Who doesn’t? Keep living your best life,” Fox wrote.

          On Esme’s last year’s birthday, Fox shared yet another photo of his youngest daughter who took part in the New York Marathon.

          “Esme…then…and now- you did it! You are amazing, congratulations! Your dood is very proud, oh yea, and happy birthday!” Fox wrote in the caption to the pictures posted on Instagram.

          George Clooney hits back at Donald Trump with scathing response after he slammed actor over French citizenship

          Ocean’s Eleven‘s star George Clooney and his family have been spending time in their 18th century Villa Oleandra in Laglio on the western shore of Lake Como, Italy, every now and then, and now, they announced they are moving to France and leaving the States behind.

          Clooney purchased the Domaine du Canadel, a former wine estate, near the Provence town of Brignoles, France, in 2021. With the couple being granted French citizenship, it seems their move to France will be permanent, as they feel “happiest” there.

          One of the reason they decided to leave the US is because both Clooney and Amal wanted to raise their children out of the spotlight, and the French privacy laws help protect their kids from international media intrusion.

          Well, now it turns out that Clooney’s move angered president Donald Trump who took to Truth Social, to criticize the actor and his wife.

          While Trump dubbed the move “good news,” he certainly didn’t mean it in a good way.

          “Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration,” Trump wrote on his favorite social media.

          “Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies,” the president added. “He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics.”

          Clooney didn’t stay silent. He responded to Trump’s post saying, “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November,” Deadline reported.
