My mom hasn’t been feeling well, so I got in the car with my children and drove three states away to take care of her. I had planned to stay there for over four weeks, but when she started feeling better, I decided to return sooner than expected to surprise Ian, my husband. In the end, I was the one surprised when I found a mysterious child watching cartoons in the middle of my living room.

As I pulled into the driveway after driving long hours home from my mom’s place, my kids, Max and Emma, couldn’t wait to enter the house and see their father. I didn’t tell Ian we were returning home earlier than planned because we wanted to surprise him.

“Surprise! Dad!” they shouted, but no one answered.

“Mom, why are there small shoes in the hallway?” Emma asked, pointing to two pairs of shoes. One pair belonged to a young child, and the other was obviously a woman’s.

“I have no idea, honey, maybe dad has guests,” I said quietly. My heart sank, sensing something was obviously not right.

The few stairs to the bedroom seemed like an eternity. I was hoping Ian wouldn’t be there with another woman. Sadly, my fears were confirmed when I saw him in the bed with someone else.

“You are home!?” he yelled, surprised to see me. “It’s not what you think,” he tried to explain. The woman next to him was looking at me with confusion.

“Who are you?” she asked, and that’s when I realized she was lied to just the way I was.

I didn’t say anything but got out of the room, making sure Max and Emma don’t see their dad cheating right in front of their eyes. At that moment, I believed it was for the best to protect them from his actions.

Entering the living room, where they still played with Jason, whom they believed was some guest, I told all three of them to go to the kitchen.

“Do you want anything to eat?” I asked them while my hands were still trembling from the shock. Emma could someone sense something bad had happened and that I needed a distraction, so she said, “Yes, mom, let’s make something to eat.”

While at the kitchen, I spotted Ian from the window getting out of the house while dragging his suitcase.

In that moment, the woman, Sophie, approached me. She started crying and apologizing. “I’m so sorry. Ian said you died four years ago and his kids were staying with your mother in another state. I had no reason not to trust him.”

I looked at Sophie and felt both anger and sadness. No matter how much I hated her for being the woman my husband cheated on me with, I felt sorry for her because she was manipulated and lied to, just like I was.

We had a long conversation and we both agreed Ian needed to pay for everything he did. We exposed him in front of his family, friends, co-workers, and even his boss.

As for Sophie and me, we bonded over time. At the end of the day, our children were siblings, and they deserved to be part of each other’s lives.

However, over time, I noticed that they texted often than usual. What’s most, there was this strangely affectionate smile on Ethan’s face whenever Rachel called him; a kind of a smile he hadn’t directed to me in months.

Being in love with him and sharing two kids together, I convinced myself I was imagining things.

But then, Ethan told me we couldn’t afford a family vacation that year due to our poor finances. Honestly, I knew he was working hard, often overtimes, and that he made good money, so his words about a financial strain we were facing didn’t make much sense.

After a while, when I noticed the masseuse stepping down, I entered the massage room, carrying a bucket of ice-cold water I picked up at the lobby and spilled it over Ethan and his alleged work wife.

They screamed and jumped out of the massage tables. When they saw me, Ethan asked me what I was doing there. “I think I should be the one asking that question,” I answered. “I thought we couldn’t afford a family vacation, but apparently, spending $3K for a weekend gateway with this woman wasn’t a big deal.

Rachel tried to convince me there was nothing going on between them, but I said, “Save your explanations for your husband. I’m calling him right away.”

“And you, Ethan, you chose this woman over your wife and children. Don’t even think of returning home. I’m done with you.”

On my way to my mom’s place, I called Rachel’s husband, and then I called my lawyer.

Old, worn out, and carrying a battered suitcase, that man that I spotted on the highway that freezing December night was a haunting silhouette against the snow.

Against my better judgement, I pulled over and asked the old man why he was all alone in the middle of the highway during the night. With fear and desperation in his eyes, he said he was trying to get to Milltown where his family was waiting for him.

“Miltown?” I frowned. “That’s a day’s drive from here. You are going to freeze, please get inside the car,” I said.

My children were waiting for me to get home on time for Christmas Eve, and I couldn’t disappoint them, not after their father left us for another woman.

The old man, who introduced himself as Frank, got into my car slowly, holding his suitcase tightly, as though he carried everything he had in the world inside it.

Realizing his face was red from the cold and his hands were numb, I turned up the heater.

“Do you really have family in Miltown?” I asked.

Shyly, he answered, “Of course I do,” but the expression of his face said otherwise.

“So why they didn’t come to pick you up?” I asked further, feeling like intruding his privacy.

“You know, life’s busy and they had other things to do,” he said.

I couldn’t drive to Miltown and miss spending Christmas Eve with my kids who were at my parents’ place, but I also couldn’t leave the old man, who wore a thin coat that barely protected him from the harsh wind, alone and out in the cold.

After hesitating for a while while stealing gazes at him, I uttered, “We can’t reach Miltown this night, but you are welcome to stay at my parents’ place and we’ll figure something out in the morning.”

Frank felt uncomfortable, but I assured him it would be fine.

My parents were very welcoming, and my kids embraced his presence. He shared with them stories about what the celebration of Christmas Eve was like when he was a child.

After dinner, I showed him his room. He thanked me and said good night, but he then started crying.

“Maria, you’ve been so kind to me, and I’ve been lying to you,” he said as his voice broke.

“What do you mean,” I asked, confused.

“I don’t have a family in Miltown,” he confessed. “I ran away from a nursing home where I was abused. Not only I, but the rest of the residents too. My life was a living hell. I didn’t say anything because I was afraid you would return me there.”

“Oh, Frank,” I said as I extended my hand to him. “Don’t worry, I won’t ever return you somewhere you weren’t treated right.”

In the morning, he told me everything about the life at the nursing home. I promised to help him expose the truth about that place and help the rest of the people who lived there and were mistreated.

The process was grueling. It required endless paperwork and a bunch of painful memories, but at the end, the investigation revealed widespread neglect.

Members of the staff were fired and the nursing home underwent reforms.

Frank then returned to the nursing home, but he became a frequent visitor of our home. Often, he would spend a couple of days at our place, sharing stories, love, and laughter with my children who adored him.

One evening, he stopped by, carrying a carefully wrapped painting.

“This painting is a very valuable one. It belonged to my late wife, and now it’s yours. It’s a thank you gift for everything you’ve done to me,” Frank said.

This father was aware that attending a good school would open doors to Danielle and Michael, so he enrolled them in an exclusive private school. The tuition took every cent he earned with hard work as a cabinet maker. But he didn’t mind, because after graduation, they were both accepted at prestigious universities with scholarships.

Yet, the living and traveling expenses were still huge.

Eventually, Peter’s children got well-paying jobs and had their own families. He was happy for them, feeling proud at every success they achieved, trying not to bother them, and living a quiet life.

Sadly, it was like that until he suffered a stroke one day.

This father ended in a wheel chair. He couldn’t walk or speak, and it was to his children to take care of him.

However, Danielle and Michael weren’t happy about the idea of having their father stay with them, so they often argued about who would take him in. “Michael, I told you I won’t be stepping up for you. Not another time. Take dad and go away.”

Despite his sister’s words, Michael was certain Danielle would take her father in. She on the other hand believed Michael returned home together with their father.

But they were both very wrong, and their father spent the night out in his wheelchair.

In the morning, when Danielle got outside and saw her father on the porch, freezing and unable to call for help, she immediately called the ambualnce.

Peter was taken to the hospital. The doctors said he suffered of hypothermia. He was close to dying and they weren’t sure if he would make it.

Feeling guilty and ashamed of herself, Danielle called her brother. “Michael, it’s dad…,” she said.

“Danielle, if you are calling to complain about last night, I’m not willing to listen.”

No, Michael. Dad’s at the hospital. Please come as quickly as you can.”

While staying next to their dad’s hospital bed, both Michael and Danielle realized what they did. He did everything for them, and they returned with bitterness and disrespect.

“Michael, we did our father wrong,” Danielle said. “Yes, and I’m so sorry for that.”

“Young boy,” Jessica’s dad, Hubert Pennigton said to Karl, who was getting ready for the wedding day at the room across Jessica’s, “you’ll leave right away, and you’ll never look back.”

“Sir, I’m not a boy, but a man, and I’m in love with your daughter. I’m not going anywhere,” Karl said, trying hard to hide how afraid he was of Hubert’s words.

“Listen now, and listen carefully. I’m not offering you any options. YOU’LL LEAVE! And that’s final. You know I have connections with influential people. I’m gonna make your life a living hell.”

Karl was aware Hubert’s threats were real. Everyone in town was intimidated by him. He worked with suspicious people who were involved in nasty businesses.

“Are you threatening me, sir?” Karl asked, trembling.

“No, it’s not a threat, it’s a promise,” Huber said, and Karl knew he meant it. “Now, you will leave this place right now without anyone noticing and ghost Jessica forever, OR ELSE!”

Hubert placed his index finger on Karl’s chest, and Karl got scared for his life, so he left.

Running out of the room, he entered a taxi and headed to the airport.

His heart broke by the thought of Jessica waiting for him at the church. But it was for her sake too. Her father was a dangerous man.

Jessica walked down the aisle, and with every step she made, her nervousness grew because she couldn’t spot Karl among the people gathered at the church to celebrate their wedding day.

When a few hours passed by and she realized Karl wasn’t coming, Jessica broke into tears. She cried and cried on her mother’s shoulder, but nothing could comfort her.

In the years to come, Jessica didn’t date anyone. She couldn’t forget Karl. But then, her father introduced her to the son of a wealthy family friend and forced her to marry him. They welcomed a daughter, Olivia, but her husband cheated on her whenever he could. But it was often that Jessica thought of Karl and their wedding day, especially while sitting at her porch and having her cup of tea.

Lost into her thoughts of past memories, she was disturbed by the voice of the mailman. “Ms. Pennington, there is mail for you,” the mailman said with a smile on the face. “Oh, dear, you scared me,” she said, almost dropping her tea.

He then handed her an envelope with her name and address written on it. The name of the sender was too familiar to be able to ever forget; Karl Pittman.

Jessica’s hands started trembling. She could barely open the letter.

“Dear Jessica,

I hope you don’t mind hearing from me. It’s been 50 years, but I wanted to tell you that there has not been a day I haven’t thought of you. It was never my intention to leave you, not ever, but your father threatened me. I shouldn’t have listened, but I was too young and too afraid,” the letter read.

Jessica stopped and wiped her tears. She needed to gather strength to continue reading the letter that she had been hope to receive her whole life.

“I never married and never had children because I could never date anyone after you. Here are my phone number and address. Please write me if you want.

Over time, Daniel and I got engaged and then married. My relationship with Emily remained the same as day one. We were never close although I did my best to enter her world. No matter her indifference, I never lost hope she would eventually accept me fully.

Don’t get me wrong, Emily was never rude to me. On the contrary, she was always kind, but never affectionate or approachable.

A couple of years into my marriage to Daniel, he lost his life in a car crash. My world collapsed. It was just Emily and I.

After the funeral, my stepdaughter approached me with teary eyes and asked, “What do we do now?”

I took her hand and said in a comforting voice, “Now we stick together. We are a family and we’ll get through it.”

I believed that my relationship with Emily would change after the tragedy which was supposed to unite us in shared grief. But once again, I was wrong. Emily enrolled in college and moved out of the house, and the gap between us widened.

A stunning waitress handed my husband a note – his face flushed as he read it

Twenty-five years with my husband Aaron felt like a minute. But did he feel the same? Our anniversary was far from what I had imagined it would be, and it was all because of a young waitress Aaron seemed to be infatuated by.

The not that fancy restaurant I booked for celebrating 25 years of marriage was the same where Aaron and I had our first date. The atmosphere was as pleasant as always, the smell of garlic bread filling the air.

I put on my fanciest dress, trying to look stunning for my dear husband.

However, no matter how hard I tried to have his attention, he seemed to be distracted by something else, looking at all directions except at me, his wife.

The realization that Aaron had his eyes at the young waitress, made me feel so unappreciated that I wanted the earth to open and swallow me.

“Aaron, honey, this place looks just like it did when we first been here,” I said. But Aaron just nodded. He wasn’t interested to pay any attention to me.

He called the waitress, and she came to our table.

“Are you ready to order?” she said pleasantly. “Yes, I’d have a steak and roasted potatoes, and my wife would have chicken and mashed potatoes, please,” Aaron ordered, not taking his eyes off of the waitress.

I didn’t want the chicken, I wanted fish and chips, but I didn’t have the strength to argue with my husband.

As the night proceeded we’ve learned plenty of things about our waitress.

Her name was Kelsey, she lived two blocks away, and owned a cat, Gypsy.

She was in a hurry to get our orders, somehow trying to get my husband to shut up and stop asking her that many questions.

I was overwhelmed by the entire experience and excused myself to the bathroom. The moment I closed the door, tears started rolling down my face. I looked at myself in the bathroom’s mirror and wondered why I wasn’t enough for my husband when he was my entire world.

I collected myself and got out, putting a smile on my face. But just as I headed towards the table, I noticed the waitress handing Aaron a piece of paper. As he red it, his face flushed.

I didn’t ask anything about it although I was dying to learn what that note read.

It didn’t take long before we decided to call it a night.

My heart raced as I wondered what that note contained. But I was too afraid to ask.

At one moment, I noticed Aaron crumbling the piece of paper and tossing it in the trash can. He then said he needed to get outside, but that he would be back in a minute.

As I heard the door closing, I rushed towards the trash and took the note out.

“You have a gorgeous wife sitting in front of you, SIR! She looks at you with loving eyes. Meanwhile, you’re staring at me. I wouldn’t have written this, but your beautiful and kind wife deserves better. Appreciate her. Love her!“

I sighed in relief. “Oh, Kelsey,” I murmured.

I was holding that piece of paper as something sacred when Aaron entered the house with a bottle of wine, a box of chocolate, and a bouquet of flowers.

He saw me with the paper and said, “Sorry I needed a stranger to remind me how special you are and how much you mean to me.”

He kissed me, and I forgave him. We spent the rest of evening celebrating our anniversary.

When the homeless man who asked for coffee at the café at the airport sat next to Jimmy in first class, it raised a lot of questions. If he had money for an expensive plane ticket, why would he ask for something that only cost a couple of dollars?

Jimmy was a seemingly ordinary guy next door, but his heart was one of gold.

When he met Kathy, he knew she was the one the moment he laid eyes on her. When he popped the question just a month later, his friends called him crazy. “You are rushing things, you don’t even know her well,” they’d say. But Jimmy’s heart said otherwise.

That day, he was about to meet Kathy’s parents for the first time. Her words and “warnings” about her stern and serious father only added to the nervousness Jimmy felt.

As he was waiting for his flight, he decided to have some coffee at the airport’s café and get a bit distracted from the thoughts of what was awaiting him.

Jimmy was enjoying the calm atmosphere when he noticed a man wearing worn clothes entering the place. He went from table to table, asking from something, but every person at the coffee shop either avoided eye contact or shook their heads.

Finally, the homeless man approached Jimmy and asked him for coffee.

Jimmy hesitated before agreeing. “Sure, what would you want?” he asked.

“I’d have Jamaican Blue Mountain,” he said, almost sheepishly. “I’ve heard it’s really good.”

I smiled, because it was the priciest item on the menu. “Why that one?” Jimmy asked.

The homeless man replied that he asked for that particular brand of coffee because he had heard it was the best one, and since it was his birthday that day, why not there and then.

Jimmy ordered the coffee along with a slice of cake. He thought to himself, “What’s a birthday without a cake.”

He placed it on his table and told the homeless man to join him.

The man shared his life story, and Jimmy loved their conversation.

Before Jimmy left, he handed the homeless man $100. He didn’t want to accept it, but Jimmy insisted. “Consider this a gift from me for your birthday,” Jimmy said, “and have a good one.”

Once he boarded the plane, the nervousness of meeting Kathy’s family suddenly returned. Jimmy couldn’t help but wonder if his future mother and father-in-law would accept him. He cared for Kathy so much that he truly wanted to make an impression.

As he was sitting next to the window, someone approached him and said, “Mind if I join you?”

Jimmy looked at the man and his heart started racing. It was the homeless man who asked for coffee just an hour ago. But this time, his hair was neatly combed and he wore an expensive suit.

“What is going on?” Jimmy asked, confused.

“Let me introduce myself again,” the man said, “I’m David, Kathy’s father.”

“What?” Jimmy asked. “You are the man I’m flying to meet?”

“Yes,” David said. “My daughter is my world, so I didn’t want to hear your rehearsed answers, I wanted to see what kind of a person you are when nobody’s watching.”

As David smiled, he added, “By the way, Jimmy, you passed the test.”

“A test?” Jimmy mumbled. “So this was a test?”

“Yes, and now I want to see how you act around my family.”

When Jimmy arrived at Kathy’s parents’ place, he was welcomed by her mother and her siblings. They were easy-going people who made Jimmy feel welcomed.

Once the dinner was over, David turned to Jimmy and said, “You passed another test. Welcome to the family.”

Jimmy was relieved. He wasn’t mad at Kathy for not warning him about her father’s plan.

All he cared for was his future with the woman he loved.
