Country music icon George Strait suffered the loss of two very special individuals saying he “won’t ever be the same.” 

Posting on the social media, Strait, 71, shared his tributes to his “treasured” band member, Gene Elders, and his manager of 45 years, Ervine “Erv” Woolsey. The two music legends died within hours of each other, leaving Strait heartbroken.

“Hard to believe we lost two of our music family members on the same day. Our Ace In the Hole treasured band member Gene Elders passed away yesterday afternoon shortly after we lost Erv,” Strait wrote. “All of our prayers go out to both families. Me and the band won’t ever be the same without our brother Gene. We loved him so much. Go play with Mike again Geno. We’ll come join you guys later.”

Elders, a native of Austin, Texas, had been with Strait’s Ace In the Hole band since 1984. He played the fiddle and mandolin for Strait and had previously been with Lyle Lovett’s Large Band for 11 years.

Strait’s manager and “most importantly my friend for even longer” was one of the most renowned managers in Nashville, Tennessee.

According to Strait’s post, Woolsey died due to complications from surgery despite fighting hard. “He had complications from a surgery and just couldn’t overcome it. He was a very tough man, and fought hard, but sadly it was just too much,” the singer wrote.

Strait’s fans shared their condolences. “I can’t believe it. So many great ones, so many years of bringing us wonderful music. Thinking of you all 🙏🏻,” one fan wrote. “I loved listening to his fiddle playing during your songs,” another added.

Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, also celebrated Ervine’s legacy, acknowledging his contributions to the careers of numerous country artists, including Lee Ann Womack, Dierks Bentley, and Clay Walker.

“Without the savvy and determination of Erv Woolsey, we may never have heard of George Strait,” he told Variety. “Erv heard Strait in a Texas bar in 1975 and was an immediate fan and proponent, when others said the singer sounded too traditional. 

As an MCA Records exec, Erv pushed to sign Strait in 1981 and supported his refusal to change his image or sound. Strait went on to become a superstar, revitalizing country music’s traditions.

“All of us owe Erv Woolsey an enormous debt of gratitude for leading with his convictions and always supporting artists and new talent,” Young added.

When my father married my stepmother Linda following my mom’s passing, I hoped for the best. She had two daughters, Amanda and Becca, and the thought of having sisters felt comforting at the time. I was just a 12-year-old girl who suffered a loss, and the presence of someone my age in my life could bring a sense of normalcy, or at least that’s what I thought.

The truth was that Linda’s daughter’s were the center of her world – a world in which there was no place for me. My dad didn’t seem to mind that I wasn’t getting the attention her daughters were.

The kitchen, where I spent hours cleaning and washing the dishes, suddenly became my prison and my sanctuary.

My stepmom would always praise her daughters for their straight A’s, while my report cards would sit forgotten on the kitchen counter, collecting dust and ignorance.

Doing my best to fit in, I would sometimes offer help with Amanda’s and Becca’s homework, but they would always refuse it, crushing every attempt I made to make any sort of connection.

Whenever Linda and dad planned a holiday, it was her daughters who would pick the destination. I remember asking my stepmother once why everything revolved around my step-sisters, but she just glanced at me coldly and said, “Carol, please stop acting like a victim.”

I couldn’t help but wonder what made her do such a thing.

Eventually, I decided to seek answers so I went to the mansion, my father’s favorite place.

Once inside, I recalled all the beautiful moments shared with my father and my mother there. As I walked through the hallway, I noticed an envelope on the table of my dad’s home office. It was as though the door to the room was left open intentionally.

As I tried to open it, my hands trembled.

The words I went though changed everything.

Linda said that leaving me my father’s mansion was an attempt to get rid of the weight of her mistakes for years. She wrote that in the attempt to protect her daughters, she became blind of the harm she caused me. Over the years, she realized her daughters turned into entitles women who only cared about money and status, and I on the other hand never asked anything from her or my father.

Linda regretted treating me as though I didn’t exist. She was mad at herself for failing me, repeatedly and profoundly.

Honestly, at that moment, I didn’t know what to feel. I read that letter many times, letting those words sink in.

Mum wakes to find five-year-old daughter dead beside her

Lila Marsland, who was weeks shy of her sixth birthday, was found unresponsive next to her mother, Rachel, 36.

When the mom woke up and realized her daughter wasn’t breathing, she called the paramedics. Sadly, there was nothing that could be done. According to them, the girl had been dead for several hours before they arrived at her home.

The devastated mother said the family didn’t have any answers of the cause of death. Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Rachel shared, “I woke up and she was dead next to me. I rang for an ambulance but she had been dead a few hours.

“They gave her CPR; they arrived within minutes but it was already too late. It’s horrendous. I still can’t believe it’s happened.

“She was kind to everyone; I would take her to school and pick her up and she would be hugging all the teachers. It would take her 30 minutes to leave.”

Lila attended Flowery Field Primary School in Hyde.

She was described as “the nicest child ever.” According to her mom, Lila had a lot of friends and was known for her bright red hair and her bubbly personality.

“Because we don’t know what she’s died of, I don’t feel like we can even grieve properly at the moment. We haven’t even been given answers on how she’s died,” Rachel told Manchester Evening News.

Lila’s funeral was held a month after her sudden passing, with everyone from her primary school in attendance.

“It was a nice send off for her,” Rachael said. “We had a horse and carriage. The church was absolutely packed; all the school attended. It was the perfect day for her.”

Tragically, Lila died on December 28, 2023. In October of 2024, an inquest into Lila’s death has now opened at Stockport Coroners Court, with troubling details emerging at a pre-inquest review hearing, Manchester Evening News reported.

It emerged that the original copies of Lila’s medical notes in the weeks leading up to her death had been ‘misplaced.’

“The court heard that there appeared to be no entry on records provided to the court for an assessment at 18.35 on October 8 2023. Other entries on the records indicated that Lila had been prescribed paracetamol, and though she never received the medication this suggested that she had been seen by someone senior enough to order a prescription,” the outlet reported.

Area Coroner Chris Morris requested that the ‘misplaced’ original copies of the notes be located, adding this is a “serious matter.”

“We believe this is a complete record because a copy was taken before the original was misplaced.”

Further, Mr. Morris decided that the inquest will have a jury and set aside a period of eight days, an unusually long time.
