Brielle “Brie” Bird, the 9-year-old social media star who captured the hearts of millions around the world by sharing her battle with cancer, died on December 11, five years after being diagnosed with an aggressive and recurring form of neuroblastoma.

Brie came to prominence on Instagram, where she chronicled her daily life, hospitalisations, treatments and moments of joy to an audience that eventually swelled to more than 650,000 followers at @briestrongerthancancer. These posts became beacons of light for families undergoing similar struggles, particularly with neuroblastoma that most commonly affects young children.

Brie was initially diagnosed with stage-4 neuroblastoma in 2020 and, although the disease was devastating, battled through years of treatment before achieving remission in 2022. Unfortunately, the cancer came back in January 2024. As her health deteriorated, she was transferred to hospice care in July for end-of-life care, where she was surrounded by her devoted family and loved ones.

Despite their heartbreak of witnessing their girl’s last days, Brie’s family wanted to make the rest of her days as happy and meaningful as possible. In August the young girl got an unexpected surprise. Ariana Grande, one of her favorite singers, mailed her a Christmas care package, providing a brief moment of joy at a time when she was really struggling. Brie’s reaction to the gift was so sweet and so endearing, she even shared a video as she unboxed the items with her fans.

Many of the gifts were inspired by Wicked and Glinda the fan favorite character played by Ariana in the blockbuster movie, making it all the more magical for the young fan. Brie was overwhelmed by the kindness, and the video has gone viral. Many praised the kindness of the singer and the happiness it brought Brie.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on 18 December, mother Kendra looked back on her final talks with Brie the week before she passed and honoured her incredible bravery. In a statement in which they shared the news of their daughter’s passing, Brie’s family called her a “miracle” and expressed gratitude that she inspired so many others around the world.

“One week ago from this very moment, we were having regular conversations,” Kendra wrote of her final conversation with her daughter. “We talked about what finishing touches you were going to make on your Christmas list, why Annie was an orphan (since we watched it the night before), and sleeping in your room on Christmas Eve. An hour later, you had fallen asleep, and we never heard your voice again.”

She continued: “I laid by your side, as dad sat next to your bed. We both held you, as your body transitioned, whispering all the things we’ve told you for 9 years. ‘You’re amazing! You are so loved. You have changed the world. It’s such a privilege to be your mom.’

“Brielle, our home will never feel the same. We will continue to dance in your honor, we will always serve those around us, and we will tell the world about the goodness of God,” she concluded her caption. “Though I don’t agree with or understand His plan right now, we do know that you are no longer in a broken body, and finally able to run; run straight to Jesus. 💔”

Despite a tragically brief life, Brie’s strength, positivity, and honesty inspired millions and will continue to do so for years to come.
