Although it’s been almost four years since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left Britain, rumors surrounding the reasons behind that decision that affected their relationship with the rest of the members of the Firm remain hot topic.
One of the reasons, and probably the biggest one, was their desire to run away from the British press and the pressure the media had placed on Meghan. Prince Harry wanted to avoid his darling wife being under constant scrutiny by the media as his late mother was. According to him, he didn’t want the history to repeat itself. However, contrary to their wish to stay out of the spotlight, both Harry and Meghan enjoyed the media exposure in the States, giving interviews, publishing a book, and even taking on tours that resemble official royal engagements.
Hurry’s all-tell memoir Spare has revealed a lot about the British royalty. One of the most explosive claims revealed in it, whose title allegedly comes from Harry’s “spare” role as the second son of the King or the fact that he has been “spared” from his family, is the heated argument between the brothers over Meghan Markle.
According to Harry, his brother reportedly labeled Meghan “difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive.”
Harry explained how William went to Nottingham Cottage, then Harry and Meghan’s home on Kensington Palace grounds in London, in order to discuss “‘the whole rolling catastrophe’ of their relationship and struggles with the press.”
However, the conversation turned into a heated argument.
When they announced what was referred to as Megxit, things between Harry and Meghan and the rest of the royals turned heated. But now it seems that the decision to departure from Harry’s family wasn’t an easy one.
Harry and Meghan said they had decided “after many months of reflection and internal discussions.”
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the statement read.
The couple added that they planned to spend time both in the UK as well as North America while “continuing to honor our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”
“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” the couple said.
Speaking of how the family received the news, Harry said they were outraged and William began “screaming and shouting” at him during the meeting with then-Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth II to outline how he and Meghan were stepping down from their working roles.
“I went in with the same proposal that we’d already made publicly but once I got there I was given five options. One being all-in, no change. Five being all out. I chose option three in the meeting. Half in, half out. Have our own jobs but also work in support of the queen. But it became very clear very quickly, that goal was not up for discussion or debate,” Harry said.
Another reason for Harry and Meghan’s departure from Harry’s homeland was the speech delivered by late Queen Elizabeth in 2019.
When the Queen addressed the nation during the speech in question, there were plenty of photos of each member of the family in the background, but not Meghan’s or Harry’s. This was interpreted by many as a sign that the Sussexes weren’t considered a fundamental part of the family. At the time, the couple had already started transitioning to a non-royal life. But ‘photo-gate’, as it was dubbed in a number of tabloids, was the final nail in the coffin.
Royal expert and author Andrew Morton wrote in his 2018 book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, that there was yet another photograph that added to the suspicion that the royals didn’t want them near.
The photograph in question, taken in 2016, showed Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Prince William, and Prince George. Two years later, another photograph of the four was taken and Harry and Meghan saw it as a sign that the Royal Family was “conspiring against them.”
“The royal couple suspected that the entire institution was conspiring against them. As they saw it, the evidence was all around them. The unspoken code was straightforward: the future of the monarchy was assured, with or without Meghan and Harry,” Morton wrote, as per Express.
The decision to step down from their royal duties made the Queen sad.
“It was a source of sadness to the Queen that she got to see so little of Archie and Lilibet and that Harry and Meghan were not able to join her for a weekend at Balmoral in August when the Queen used to host a ‘sleepover’ for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” royal expert Katie Nicholl wrote in The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown.
Hopefully, despite everything that has happened throughout the last four years, the royals would be able to make amends.
