Growing up, Prince William and Prince Harry were extremely close. Besides being brothers, they were also friends, and the same goes for Harry and Kate Middleton.
However, this relationship and the strong bond no one ever believed could be broken was affected after Harry tied the knot with former Suits actress Meghan Markle.
It isn’t a secret that Meghan and Kate didn’t get along, at least according to the media and various reports.
“Meghan would agree with the assessment that the duchesses were not the best of friends,” authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claim in their book Finding Freedom. “Their relationship hadn’t progressed much since [Markle] was Harry’s girlfriend.”
According to them, Kate wasn’t welcoming and didn’t take Meghan under her wing as most people expected. Out of everyone in the family, she knew best what it was like to be getting inside the Firm as a ‘newcomer.’
“Meghan was disappointed that she and Kate hadn’t bonded over the position they shared, but she wasn’t losing sleep over it,” Durand and Scobie wrote, adding that “Meghan would far rather have had Kate check in on her during the most difficult times with the press.”
Kate and Harry have been another story. Just how close the two were speaks the fact that he had a special nickname for her.
Ok Magazine wrote how the prince called his sister-in-law “Cath.”
During an interview with BBC Radio 1, the host asked Kate: “Is this a thing just in the family?” referring to what Harry calls her. “Yeah, I’m not sure,” the Duchess answered. “I’m not that familiar with it I have to say, but I’ll answer to most things to be honest.”
Kate Middleton and Prince Harry first met in 2003 at Highgrove. The Duke of Sussex was around when his brother, Prince William, invited Kate Middleton to meet his father at Prince Charles’s family house.
“I actually went bright red when I met [him] and scuttled off feeling very shy about meeting [him],” Kate admitted, adding, “William wasn’t there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn’t there from Fresher’s Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on.”
According to royal author Christopher Andersen, when Harry and Kate first met and she looked away for a moment, he said, “Oh my God, she is gorgeous!”
Truth is that Prince Harry and Kate Middleton got along from the start. A University friend of Prince William and Kate, Jules Knight, said: ”Kate and Harry got on like they’d known each other forever.” She added that two shared a playful bond. “They were always full of fun when they were together. They were joking around all the time – always trying to find ways to make each other laugh,” Knight said.
During their younger days, when William and Kate took some time off and he reportedly dated other women, among which Becca Craig whom he met during a trip to Kenya. However, it was Harry as well as Prince Charles who insisted William not to give Becca any false expectations and get together with Kate.
Having said that, despite the feuds and the rocky relationship between William and Harry, Kate wishes the two brothers make amends.
According to royal expert and author Christopher Andersen, Kate could be a pivotal figure in facilitating a reconciliation between Prince Harry and Prince William.
One major hurdle that could stand in the Princess of Wales’ way is her own husband.
“Kate was close to Harry, true,” Christopher Andersen shared with Fox. “They had a special bond. They shared the same goofy sense of humor and laughed at the same jokes. Harry often said Kate was the sister he never had. Of course, Kate would like nothing better than to have the brothers kiss and make up. It would be one less cloud hanging over the royal family’s head.”
He continued: “But above all else, Kate is loyal to her husband. She understands completely why William is still fuming. Kate is not about to pressure William while he has so much on his plate, notably her cancer and the king’s cancer battle as well.”
