My husband and his brothers left me at a stranded gas station for a prank video, and I never came back

I’ll never forget how they laughed as that truck tore out of the gas station. It wasn’t just a joke to them, it was pure evil, the kind of laugh that gets stuck in your head for days.

Dust flew up everywhere as they sped off down the empty highway, leaving me standing there in the scorching heat.

“Kyle!” I yelled, running a few steps after the truck. “Kyle, wait!”

He didn’t even tap the brakes. He just laughed harder. His brothers, Brad and Chase, were hanging out the windows hanging their phones out to film me.

“Good luck, Lena!” Chase yelled back. “You’ve got about three hundred miles to walk!”

A split second after that, the truck vanished from sight, leaving me standing alone next to a nearly empty gas station right in the middle of nowhere. I didn’t have my purse because it was in the truck. Nor did I have my wallet; it was also in the truck. No money, no water, and no means of getting home.

The sad thing about this is that I only entered the gas station because Kyle said he couldn’t be bothered to buy an energy drink for himself. I was only trying to be a good wife, but got left behind in the middle of nowhere by my own husband under the hot sun while he and his brothers made my panic their joy.

Almost an hour had passed when my phone started vibrating inside my pocket. My battery was at one percent when I got a message from Kyle saying, “Don’t be angry, baby. This is all just a joke for our YouTube channel. We will be back.”

And then the phone screen went blank before I could even reply.

This man, who I gave everything to, thought my panic was good content to post online for strangers.

I was just done.

An old van pulled up to the pumps on the far side of the lot. A woman got out, stretched, and started pumping gas. Looking at her, it hit me: I didn’t need Kyle anymore.

I took the SIM card out of my dead phone, snapped it in half, and tossed it into the trash can by the door. Then I took a breath and walked over to her.

If it made them happy to make a video about me disappearing, then fine. I was going to give them their money’s worth. I didn’t realize then that walking out of my marriage would start a domino effect that would bring down Kyle’s whole world.

I walked up to the lady with the minivan and asked if she was heading anywhere near a bigger town. Her name was Martha, and she was driving to see her daughter three states over. I told her what my husband did, and she didn’t grill me with a million questions, she just opened the door and handed me a bottle of water from the back.

Two hours later, when Kyle and his brothers pulled back into the gas station expecting to film my tearful reaction for their followers, I was already seventy miles down the highway.

What Kyle didn’t realize was that when he drove off with my purse, he trapped his whole company. As the only operations manager for his family’s logistics business, I handled all the contracts, payroll, and permits. My name was on every main account, and the SIM card I’d just snapped in half was the two-factor authentication key for the entire business. He had my purse, but without me, he was locked out of everything.

I only found out what happened later from a former coworker. By midnight that night, three of Kyle’s trucks were stranded at state weigh stations without valid transit permits. By 3 a.m., his biggest client canceled a contract because nobody was answering the emergency compliance line. When he tried to access our joint accounts to pay the fines, he found them frozen, I had used a gas station phone hours earlier to report my cards lost after he stole my purse.

Kyle’s “prank video” never even made it online. Instead, he spent forty-eight hours dealing with state troopers, furious clients, and a collapsing business.

Meanwhile, Martha dropped me off in a small coastal town. I got a job at a local shipping company, rented a place of my own, and completely rebuilt my life far away from him.

Five years later, I was sitting in my desk at the small logistics consultancy I owned when the door chimed.

Kyle walked in. He looked exhausted, wearing a worn-out coat and looking ten years older. He’d tracked me down through the business registry, probably expecting the same terrified woman he’d dumped at a gas station, desperate to ask me to help him sort out old tax paperwork.

“Lena?” he said, taking an uncertain step toward my desk. “I finally found you. Look… about what happened back then—”

He froze.

My business partner David walked out from the back office, set a cup of coffee on my desk, and rested a hand on my shoulder. David used to be the state compliance inspector whose audit finally shut down Kyle’s ruined company three years ago.

David looked right at Kyle, recognizing him immediately, and slowly crossed his arms.

“Can we help you with something?” I asked, pretending not to know who he even was.

Kyle looked back and forth between David and me. You could see the realization hit him all at once. He wasn’t standing in front of a helpless victim anymore. He was looking at someone who had built a whole life without him, while his had completely fallen apart.

So was his attempt to use me as a part of a prank he could post on YouTube worth it? I don’t think so!
