I thought the girl living with us was my husband’s daughter

At 49, I had everything I’ve ever dreamed of, my own house, a successful career, and people I cared for. But, the one thing that was missing was love, a man who would make me feel complete. And then, Aiden came into my life. The most charming individual, a widower with an 18-year-old daughter, or at least that’s what I thought.

That evening at the fundraiser, Aiden caught my attention. He was handsome and unlike the flashy men I often encountered.

He approached me and started chatting. His big brown eyes looked at me the way I was never looked before. As he poured us wine, he mentioned something about not usually attending events of that type but it was Emily who forced him to get out more.

I got curious and asked who Emily was.

Aiden said she was his daughter. After he’s wife’s passing it was just the two of them. She was his most important person, his rock.

The way he spoke of her told me he was a caring father. It was obvious he adored her and she meant the world to him.

It didn’t take long before I fell for Aiden. I was so infatuated with him that I couldn’t stop thinking about him.

In the days to come, he sent me flowers and organized lovely dates. I enjoyed the long conversations with him. He was there to listen to me when I needed to vent about work. By his side, I felt young again.

When I met his daughter for the first time, I felt nervous. I knew how much Aiden cared for her so I hoped she would accept me.

Emily was as lovely as her father spoke of her. But she was the secretive type. She didn’t speak much and whenever I’d ask her about school, she would avoid the conversation by simply saying, “You know, just the usual boring stuff.”

Aiden convinced me she has always been like that, so I didn’t want to force my relationship with her.

A couple of months into dating, Aiden started complaining about the state of his home, saying it needed repairs and it wasn’t fit for a teenager. Feeling sorry for him and Emily, I told them they could move in with me, not knowing that the offer would change everything.

I was working long hours while Emily attended school and Aiden stayed home.

One day, I decided to leave work early and surprise Aiden with a nice dinner. But what I stumbled upon shattered my world.

As I opened the front door, I heard laughing coming from my bedroom. I climbed the stairs while unease settled in my chest.

And there they were, Aiden and his daughter. She had one of my most valuable bracelets on her wrist. My jewelry box lay open on the bed, and some of my watches, necklaces, and cash were there. Items I hadn’t even notice were missing.

At first, I thought they were planning a surprise for me, but Emily’s bag with my jewelry inside told a different story.

“There’s more in the bottom drawer, Aiden said, while his daughter laughed and added, !I know. This was easier than the last time.”

As soon as I realized they were robbing me, I went downstairs as quietly as I could and called the police. They arrived in no time and arrested Aiden and Emily.

Among their belongings, they found a bunch of fake IDs.

And Emily? She was far from an 18-year-old schoolgirl. In fact she was 32 and Aiden’s partner in crime.

The officers told me that who I believed was the love of my life was a con man targeting wealthy individuals like me to rob.

As he was getting out of the house with the handcuffs on, Aiden turned to me and said, “You’ll regret this.” But I wasn’t afraid of him. His threats meant nothing to me.

That night, as I lay in my bed, I thought of all the red flags I decided to ignore.

I was hurt and betrayed, but what Aiden did to me was just a lesson. He tried to rob me and steal my belongings, but he could never steal my strength.
