Before Donald Trump addressed the lawmakers for the first time as a president of the country, a role he has undertaken for the second time, he had a brief exchange with Bush-appointed Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
Trump’s words to Roberts caused a stir on the social media and triggered a number of rumors and conspiracy theories, pretty much as expected, we’d say.
As Donald Trump and Justice John Roberts shook hands and the president gave the judge a friendly pat on the arm, the microphone that was on revealed a chunk of their conversation.
“Thank you again. Thank you again. Won’t forget it,” Trump said.
Following the “incident,” The Daily Beast suggested a conspiracy that arose from the hot mic revelation, as reported by the Daily Mail. “It was not immediately clear what, exactly, Trump was thanking him for,” the publication stated before adding, “though [there] have been more than a few instances over the past few years of Supreme Court intervention in favor of the president.”
Author Paul Blumenthal argued, “Roberts gave Trump a get-out-of-jail-free card, and Trump is grateful.
“Whatever decisions are forthcoming from the court on Trump’s unlawful administration are now tainted by Trump’s gratitude to Roberts. He ripped the mask off the court’s pretensions to fairness and independence and revealed his most vital accomplice.”
President Trump took to Truth Social to comment on the speculations.
“The Fake ‘Play the Ref’ News, in order to create a divide between me and our great U.S. Supreme Court, heard me say last night, loudly and openly as I was walking past the Justices on the way to the podium, ‘thank you’, to Chief Justice John Roberts,” Trump wrote.
“Like most people, I don’t watch Fake News CNN or MSDNC, but I understand they are going ‘crazy’ asking what is it that I was thanking Justice Roberts for?”
He went on, “They never called my office to ask, of course, but if they had I would have told these sleazebag ‘journalists’ that I thanked him for SWEARING ME IN ON INAUGURATION DAY, AND DOING A REALLY GOOD JOB IN SO DOING! The Fake News never quits!”
During his address to Congress, Trump said that the ongoing war in Ukraine is on the top of the list of his priorities, alleging the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is “gambling with World War 3.”
