Cher’s mom, Georgia Holt, passes away at 96 – rest in peace

Georgia Holt, an American singer, actress, a former model and mother of pop queen Cher passed away aged 96.

The sad news was shared on Twitter by the ‘Goddess of Pop,’ who wrote, “Mom is gone,” next to a sad face emoji.

In the past, Cher opened up of her mother’s health issues due to her advanced age. Once, the singer revealed, “Sorry I’ve Been Mia. Mom’s Been Sick Off & On. She Just Got Out Of Hosp. She Had Pneumonia.”

In a 2013 documentary titled “Dear Mom, Love Cher,” featuring the life of Georgia Holt, Cher expressed her love and appreciation for her mother who had always been by her side and helped her become the woman that she is today.

Georgia Holt, born Jackie Jean Crouch on June 9, 1926 in Kensett, Arkansas, was married six times during her lifetime.

Her mother had her when she was just 13 years old and Georgia spent most of her childhood with her father who took her to nightclubs where she performed. She remembers her dad, Roy, as a caring father who wanted only the best for her. In hopes of a better life, Georgina and Roy moved to L.A. She changed a number of high school and recalls being the poorest kid in each of them. “I was the only poor kid in the school, and I was already insecure. But my voice saved me because I sang in school, and I was real popular because of my voice,” she said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune.

Holt was best known for her roles in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. She also starred in I Love Lucy, Father’s Little Dividend and Lovely to Look At.

During the ’80s, Holt recorded an album, Honky Tonk Woman, but she only released it in 2013.

After Holt divorced Cher father shortly after giving birth, she was forced to leave her baby daughter in a Catholic orphanage.

Cher spoke of that in the documentary and said that her mom didn’t want to talk about it.

“I heard the abortion story when I was a teenager,” Cher revealed in the documentary.

“The orphanage story has been a touchy one for my mom her whole life, and she didn’t want to talk about it. I said, ‘Mom, why didn’t you just march in and take me?’ She said, ‘I didn’t have the power. I didn’t have any money or a job, and the church was so strong. I’d go see you every day and you’d be crying. You don’t know what it was like.’ It was harder for women then.”

Cher’s loss comes at a time when the other aspects of her life seem to be going as planned.

She is currently dating Alexander Edwards, a 36-year-old music producer who is 40 years her junior.

Speaking of their age gap, Cher twitted, “Love doesn’t know math, it sees [red heart emojis]. Rinpoche told me ‘some ppl [sic] meet, others ‘recognise’.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with Cher during these times of grief.
