Caitlyn Jenner announced the passing of her mother, Esther Jenner.

The 73-year-old Olympic gold medalist shared her heartbreak through an emotional Instagram post.

“I am heartbroken to announce my mom passed away yesterday morning, peacefully. Losing a mother is unique in the sense that she is the only person that loved me my entire life,” Caitlyn wrote.

Posting several pictures of her beloved mother, who was a “few weeks shy” of her 97th birthday at the time of her passing, Caitlyn showed her love for her late mother and wrote, “I will miss her tremendously.”

When Caitlyn transitioned in 2015, Esther supported her publicly.

“It takes so much courage to do what she’s doing,” Esther told People in June 2016. “When I first saw [Caitlyn], all I wanted to do was give her a big hug.

“I love her,” she said at the time. “And she’s happy. That’s all that matters.”

When Caitlyn was excluded from the Hulu series, The Kardashians, Esther said, “I think that Kardashian show is the most senseless thing I have ever watched,” and added: “But my two granddaughters, Kendall and Kylie, created it, and I love them dearly.” Further, Esther told The Sun, “They’re my blood. And my four step-grandchildren — Kim, Kourtney, Khloé, and Robert — feel like they’re mine, too.”

Esther never left her son-turned-daughter’s side and she was even featured in the shows I Am Cait, which ran for two seasons between 2015 and 2016, and Untold: Caitlyn Jenner, a five-part docu-series that was released in August 2021. Previously, Esther appeared in Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

“It seems as though when people start to have more understanding, the stigma of being different goes away. To me, that’s the beauty of [Caitlyn] giving herself permission to do this because—like for any of us—once you’ve seen something over and over again, you get more used to it, right?” Esther once said.

Messages of condolences came pouring in. “So very sorry to hear that. That is truly heartbreaking sending you love, thoughts and prayers,” one person wrote.  “She loved you for you! rest in peace mama jenner!” another added.

Rest in peace, Esther. Our thoughts and prayers go to Caitlyn Jenner and her family.
