Woman with criminal past gave kidney to the officer who arrested her on several occasions years ago

Life is unpredictable and some encounters are so serendipitous that they end up changing our existence entirely.

Such was the meeting between a drug abuser of many years named Jocelynn James and the cop who arrested her on several occasions, Terrell Potter. James was going through a very dark period of her life at the time and she and Potter went separate ways after her arrests. However, many years after that, their paths crossed and she ended up saving his life.

This story, which was initially shared by Rick Karle, WVTM 13, stole the hearts of many.

Last year, Potter experienced some health issues and was in need of a kidney transplant. Finding a donor, however, was very hard and the only thing he could do was wait. “We began praying about getting the right kidney,” Potter said. “We were looking all over the Southeast.”

Then, James came across Potter’s family plight on Facebook. She remembered him and something inside her told her she had this man’s kidney. The next thing she did was to test if she was a match, and she was.

“If you asked me 100 names of who may give me a kidney, her name would have not been on the list,” Potter said. “It’s just unbelievable that she was willing to do that,” he told WTVM-TV. “It’s not a coincidence, it’s just God.”

James was happy she could save Potter’s life. “For God to use me as a vessel to extend Mr. Potter’s life is my greatest accomplishment. I should be dead. Instead, God helped me save a life. I am overwhelmed,” she said.

The transplant took place in June 21, 2020, and was successful. James and Potter are now very close friends, and he even considers her a family.

“God restored me from the inside out, and to be able to give another human a kidney to extend his life is really rewarding,” she said.

James added how Potter locking her up was the trigger that changed her life. She somehow became aware that the life she led wasn’t meant for her and that she needed a change, and that’s exactly what happened. Her criminal past in now behind her and she is very happy she was able to start her life over.

James now runs a nonprofit organization for women called The Place of Grace.

“I want people to realize that there is help out there for them,” James said. “It doesn’t matter what happens in your life. You can always turn it around.”
