It is common knowledge that our health and overall well-being depend heavily on our lifestyle. Having said that, the habits and routines we develop over the years can either improve or worsen our quality of life.

According to experts, four common morning habits most of us have can increase the risk of a stroke.

A stroke is when blood stops flowing to a part of your brain, as explained by NHS. It can affect the speech and the movement, and often, it takes a lot of time for the person to recover. As it represents a life-threatening condition, it requires urgent medical help.

One of the things to avoid doing in the morning is jumping out of bed abruptly. The reason is that when we get out of the bed suddenly, it can cause a sudden spike in blood pressure, putting extra strain on the arteries.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Quang from the Military Medical Academy explains that during sleep our parasympathetic nervous system dominates, which means the heart rate is slower and the blood pressure is lower.

He suggests staying in bed for a minute or two after waking up.

While many of us love having coffee first thing in the morning, health experts suggest avoid doing that because the caffeine in our favorite beverage raises blood pressure temporarily. This is especially risky for people with hypertension.

Instead, have a glass of water first to hydrate your body and wait for a while for the body to stabilize after the night’s rest before indulging in a cup of fresh coffee.

Further, experts advise against skipping breakfast because it can lead to a drop in blood sugar levels and increase the risk of a stroke.

Lastly, don’t take hot showers first thing in the morning because it can cause a sudden drop of the blood pressure. The heat of the water dilates the blood vessels which can also cause dizziness.
