Michael Strahan, who had an impressive career as the defensive end for the New York Giants, turned to television upon retiring from playing football.

The Houston Texas native has become a media personality, appearing as a football analyst on Fox NFL Sunday before co-hosting the syndicated morning talk show Live! with Kelly and Michael. Currently, he’s the host of Good Morning America, and turns out that his departure from Kelly Ripa was a messy one.

When he decided to leave Live! with Kelly and Michael, Ripa was so shocked that she took a week-long break from the show to collect herself.

“I needed a couple of days to gather my thoughts; after 26 years with this company, I earned the right,” Ripa told her audience. “(This) started a much greater conversation about communication, and consideration, and most importantly respect in the workplace … apologies have been made.”

Together with Ripa, Strahan won a Daytime Emmy twice for “Outstanding Talk Show Host” during his tenure on the show and their ratings were just going higher and higher.

Now, six years after he left the show, Strahan revealed all about his relationship with Ripa, admitting they don’t really talk to each other any longer. According to him, their relationship never recovered after he left the show. “I learned through all that went down with that, you can’t convince people to like you,” he said in his interview for Time. “I haven’t spoken to her in a long time.”

In the past, Strahan dropped hints that things between him and Ripa weren’t smooth behind the stage while they worked together.

“I remained the same person I was from Day 1. One thing I will not do is alter my attitude for somebody else’s. I learned so much from Kelly, so much from (executive producer) Michael Gelman. When it was time to go, it was time to go. Certain things that were going on behind the scenes just caught up,” he revealed in an interview with Deadline in the past.
