Two Republicans turn against Trump as Senate votes 52-46

The Senate confirmed Kelly Loeffler, a former senator and a business executive, to lead the Small Business Administration. The voting concluded with 52 in favor and 46 against.

Nevada Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen joined 51 Republicans in support, while Republican Sens. Jerry Moran of Kansas and Dan Sullivan of Alaska did not take part in the voting.

The opposition of 46 Democrats to Loeffler’s confirmation reflects the strong ideological disagreement on government spending, small business policy, and federal reform.

Senators Moran and Sullivan abstaining from voting instead of opposing her nomination raises speculations about the GOP divisions over Loeffler’s record and the SBA’s future.

Loeffler’s nomination came during a period of economic uncertainty and growing calls for better efficiency and accountability in government spending.

A number of Democrats and progressive commentators believe that Loeffler’s alignment with Trump-era policies may not benefit small businesses or the public. Also, they see her confirmation as a setback for social safety nets and fair government spending.

Loeffler, whose husband serves as CEO of Intercontinental Exchange and is the chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, promised to help the president start a “golden era of prosperity and growth” by “ending inflation, cutting taxes, unleashing American energy dominance, slashing regulation, and reining in fraud, waste, and abuse across government.”

Before her confirmation, Loeffler pledged to donate more than $200,000 of her annual salary as Small Business Administration administrator to charity if confirmed.

She claimed she did the same while serving the Senate between 2019 and 2021.

Taking to Truth Social, President Trump said of Loeffler’s nomination, “Small Businesses are the backbone of our Great Economy. Kelly will bring her experience in business and Washington to reduce red tape, and unleash opportunity for our Small Businesses to grow, innovate, and thrive. She will focus on ensuring that SBA is accountable to Taxpayers by cracking down on waste, fraud, and regulatory overreach.”

Senate Small Business Committee Chair Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) also praised Loeffler’s credentials, highlighting her “zero-tolerance policy for waste, fraud, and abuse” and commitment to ensuring SBA resources are used efficiently. “As a successful businesswoman, it is abundantly clear that Senator Loeffler truly understands what it takes to be an entrepreneur and will be an effective voice for small businesses across America,” Ernst said.
