Love him or hate him, Donald Trump is impossible to ignore, and while he’s often spoken in favor of conservative values, his personal life tells a more complex story: five children with three different women, ranging from his eldest, Donald Jr., who will turn 48 this year, to his youngest, Barron, now 19.
Trump is also a grandfather to 11 grandchildren, who mostly stay out of the spotlight, unlike their parents who are involved in different public spheres, from politics to business. Truth is, every member of the Trump family, with a few exceptions, seems to enjoy the media presence and being under the limelight.
Yet even those not yet in the spotlight can become subjects of media scrutiny, especially when their lives intersect with the public personas of their famous parents.
One example is Spencer, the 13-year-old son of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump, whose recent birthday post from his father drew attention and sparked public outrage.
Namely, Trump Jr. wished his teenage son a happy birthday on the social media, but his post didn’t sit right with many of his 10 million followers.
“Happy birthday to the littlest of my little men. Spencer, I can’t believe you’re 13 and I hope you have an awesome day buddy,” Don Jr. wrote.
“I love you so much. I can’t wait to get back into the outdoors with you. You make me very proud.”
It might have seemed like an innocent birthday tribute, and to many, it was. Still, a handful of images featuring Spencer with hunting rifles drew criticism from those who felt it was inappropriate for a 12-year-old.
“Not even 13 and you threw a gun in his arms. Truly sick. There is no reason a young man today needs to kill an animal for food,” one person wrote on Instagram.
Another added: “You’re a sorry excuse for a human – not happy unless you’re killing some innocent animals.”
Truth is, Trump’s oldest son is considered a controversial figure by many due to the “incident” he’s been involved in in the past, including one in 2019 when he took a hunting expedition to Mongolia that reportedly cost US taxpayers more than $75,000, the BBC reported at the time. The trip involved a killing of a rare Argali mountain sheep for which he granted a hunting permit from the Mongolian government only after the public reacted to the incident.
