Zohran Mamdani, 34, will become New York City’s youngest mayor in over a century when he takes office just after midnight on Jan. 1, 2026. Mamdani is also the first Muslim, South Asian, and African-born person to hold the office.
However, not everything seems to be smooth for the first Gen Z mayor given the attacks coming from Donald Trump and MAGA-aligned supporters.
Namely, Trump, who labeled Mamdani a communist, threatened to cut funding if Mamdani gets elected.
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, but Mamdani is not!” Trump wrote on his social media platform.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home.
“Because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!” he continued. “It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad. It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.”

When he took the stage to address the crowd on the day of winning the elections, Mamdani responded, saying, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.
“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”
He added: “New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.”
Unsurprisingly, some of Trump’s most loyal supporters also turned against Mamdani, among them Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, whom Trump pardoned on Monday for his role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Giuliani remarked, “My advice to him is to step down and do something else,” and went on to label Mamdani a “supporter of Muslim extremism” because he had been spotted with Imam Suraj Wahhaj.
“The imam he was with is a strong supporter of terrorism,” Giuliani added. “I’m not worried that he’s a Muslim. I’m worried that he supports Muslim extremism.”
Giuliani, who served as New York City’s mayor during and after 9/11 and was once called “America’s mayor,” went on to label Mamdani a “security threat.”
“You think the federal government will give this guy a security clearance?” Giuliani told to the NY Post. “Zohran Mamdani is a serious security threat to the United States of America. He’s a communist and a sympathizer for Muslim terrorism.”
Previously, Mamdani was bashed by actress Debra Messing and rapper 50 Cent.
