RFK Jr. on fast food and his ‘Make America healthy again’ platform

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been appointed the new Health and Human Services secretary after being confirmed by the Senate. This new position will certainly bring a number of changes.

In his speeches, JFK Jr. has highlighted that nutrition is the key element of health. With that said, his priorities are the reduction of “the dominance of ultra-processed foods” and the removal of “food additives and chemicals.”

Many of the food additives, largely used in many foods, could soon be examined and even banned, many believe. The new Health and Human Services secretary is especially vocal about artificial colors such as Red Dye 40 and Yellow No. 5 and their usage in the US food supply.

He, however, didn’t mention banning any particular foods.

Asked by Fox News host Laura Ingraham which food additives he’d effectively remove from the US, JFK Jr. argued that he won’t outright ban any because of the “freedom of choice.”

“If you want to eat Twinkies, you ought to be able to eat them,” he said.

He, however, promised to introduce “radical transparency” in informing the public about food ingredients and their health impacts.

RFK Jr. highlighted the need of healthier options at schools. He criticized the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for promoting processed foods and sugary drinks.

“We shouldn’t be subsidizing people to eat poison,” he said.

Speaking to host Steve Gruber in September, 2024, RFK Jr. tied the artificial colors in fast food to lower life expectancy.

As of the fast food chains like McDonald’s, he suggested they should return to its initial practice of cooking the fries in beef fat tallow rather than seed oils. He considers seed oils “one of the most unhealthy ingredients in foods and the reason they’re in the foods is because they are heavily subsidized,” and cause inflammations.
