Research connects ejaculation and prostate health

The prostate is a small gland in the pelvis and is part of the male reproductive system. Its main purpose is to produce semen, a thick white fluid that helps carry the sperm.

Prostate cancer is common among men; however, the exact causes of this form of cancer remain unknown. Scientists do link it to genetics and lifestyle quality.

Research shows that 60% of people diagnosed with prostate cancer are 65 or older.

According to NHS, it is more common in African American men and in Caribbean men of African ancestry while its less common at Asian men.

Since the prostate is a reproductive organ, scientists have long wondered whether prostate cancer is linked to sexual factors.

A study published in European Urology in 2016 states: “We evaluated whether ejaculation frequency throughout adulthood is related to prostate cancer risk in a large US-based study.

“We found that men reporting higher compared to lower ejaculatory frequency in adulthood were less likely to be subsequently diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“These findings provide additional evidence of a beneficial role of more frequent ejaculation throughout adult life in the aetiology of PCa [prostate cancer], particularly for low-risk disease.”

The same study, conducted by researchers at Harvard University, involving 31,925 participants, revealed that men should ejaculate 21 times per month to decrease the risk of prostate cancer.

According to Healthline, ejaculation is beneficial for several reasons. It improves the quality of sleep, the quality of the sperm, boosts the immune system, improves migraine symptoms, and reduces the risks of heart disease.

It it, however, not studies whether the benefits are the same for masturbation-driven ejaculation and partner sex-driven ejaculation.

German health insurance provider Barmer Krankenkasse states, “Masturbation helps you fall asleep.

“If you can’t sleep again, just use your hand to pleasure yourself, or use a toy, then sleep comes all by itself.”
