Lone gunman forced his way into a large building housing major offices, including the NFL and Blackstone, at 345 Park Avenue, Midtown Manhattan, and opened fire, killing four people before taking his own life.
Among those killed was a beloved NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, a Bangladeshi immigrant praised as a hero by city officials. At the time of the mass shooting during which he lost his life, Islam was off duty but working as a private security guard wearing his police uniform.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a press conference Monday night, “[Islam] was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way, he made the ultimate sacrifice – shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city. He died as he lived, a hero.”
Tisch explained that Islam was working on a paid security detail, adding, “Paid detail is a program that we have set up at the police department that allows companies to hire officers in uniform to provide extra uniform security.”

Islam had been with the NYPD since December 2021 and was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, Mayor Eric Adams said at the news conference.
He met with Islam’s family, saying of Islam, “He was a hero and we admire him for putting his life on the line.”
“Everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person,” the mayor said. “He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers, he embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.”

Islam was a father of two, and he and his wife were expecting their third child.
NYPD paid tribute to the hero officer, posting on X, “Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy.”
His funeral was attended by hundreds of officers.
The shooter was identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura who came to New York from Las Vegas shortly before the shooting. His motive is still being investigated, but officials revealed that he had a “documented mental health history.”
According to the CNN, before getting to the 33rd floor, where he injured an NFL employee and then took his own life, Tamura killed Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management, Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone employee and a mother, and Aland Etienne, a security officer.
