My husband’s daughter arrived late at night, moved in like she owned the place, and ordered me around while my husband stayed silent

That same morning at six o’clock, I prepared a simple breakfast: hard-boiled eggs and dry toast served on paper plates, along with coffee. I avoided anything greasy because I didn’t want to provoke my step-daughter and her husband, who had unexpectedly showed up late the night before with a list of demands.

As soon as Madison walked into the kitchen, still in her pajamas and staring at her phone, she took one look at her plate and said, “My dad told me you’ll be making protein pancakes for me.” I shot a look at my husband, who was busy adjusting his robe’s belt and deliberately avoiding eye contact. I told her that from what I remember from the night before, she wanted “no greasy food,” and the breakfast I served wasn’t greasy, so…? Shortly after, Evan walked in and asked for oat milk. And not just that, he expected me to serve it to him. It just goes to show how absurd their expectations were, they honestly expected me to act as their personal, unpaid maid.

Their original list was a joke. They literally demanded breakfast on the table at six sharp every morning, fresh sheets every single week, the bathroom scrubbed down every night, separate meals made just for them, and—get this—all of their clothes hand-washed.

I really wasn’t in the mood of getting into an argument with any of them, I just slid my own piece of paper across the kitchen island. I laid down the law: two grand a month in rent, split utilities, rotating cooking duties, a strict bathroom schedule, and staying the hell out of my office and bedroom.

Madison actually laughed in my face and said I couldn’t charge them rent because it was her dad’s house. Her face dropped real quick when I corrected her. I reminded her that my name is on the deed and half the down payment came from selling my old condo. Robert turned pale and begged me not to start a fight, but he was well aware of where our finances stood and that there was a prenuptial agreement he insisted on back in the day to protect our assets.

I gave them an ultimatum: sign the roommate agreement and pay the first week’s rent by noon, or pack up and get out.

Right on cue, the doorbell rang. Madison was totally thinking someone was arriving to back her up. But her face completely dropped when she opened the door and saw a cop standing on the porch next to a locksmith.

I’d actually called the non-emergency line at three in the morning to get an officer there just to watch over things. Since Robert had stupidly let them into the house the night before, I knew the legal side of things was messy and I couldn’t just throw them out myself. I wanted a cop there strictly to keep the peace and make sure there was an official record of everything, so Madison and Evan couldn’t twist the story later.

As for the locksmith, I was just covering myself. They had showed up the night before acting so entitled and confident that I had a bad feeling she had a key I didn’t know about and that’s when I knew the locks on the front door, the garage, and the side gate were getting changed right then and there.

Then Madison tried to turn on the waterworks, crying about how they were practically homeless. I wasn’t buying the manipulation for a second. These are thirty-something adults who rolled into my driveway in an SUV packed to the brim with designer luggage.

Plus, her own aunt had given me a heads-up the night before, so I already knew this whole “financial crisis” was a total lie. Madison had been bragging to the family that she was moving in with us to be pampered. It pissed her aunt off so much that she sent me screenshots of Madison and Evan living it up on a super expensive vacation in Napa just a few days ago. They weren’t desperate at all. They were just freeloaders who finally ran out of people to enable them.

Soon after, they packed up their stuff and were gone within twenty minutes. Robert agreed to pay for exactly one week at an extended-stay hotel—but he paid the hotel directly so no cash touched their hands, which finally made Madison stop the fake crying.

Once they were out of the house, Robert and I had a long, really painful talk. I called him out on how he’s been using me as a shield to avoid his daughter’s temper for the entire five years we’ve been married. I reminded him how I’ve had to sit there and take her constant digs and her calling me “Dad’s wife” instead of my name, while he just looked the other way. We ended up agreeing to go to marriage counseling, and we set some massive new rules about money—basically, neither of us can give anyone a dime without both of us signing off on it first.

Months later, Madison actually showed up at the house again. She didn’t have any bags this time, and she honestly just looked exhausted instead of her usual smug self. She didn’t even ask to come inside, but she actually gave us a real apology for taking advantage of her dad and trying to boss me around. She even handed Robert a two-hundred-dollar money order to start paying him back for that hotel week.

That night, I made a massive breakfast for dinner—we’re talking bacon, buttered toast, and crispy potatoes—and we ate right at the kitchen island. Those house rules I wrote are now taped to the inside of the pantry door, just to remind everyone exactly where we stand.
