Meet Rama Duwaji — The talented artist married to New York mayor Zohran Mamdani

Meet Rama Duwaji, the 28-year-old Syrian American artist and the most important woman in the life of New York’s new elected mayor Zorhan Mamdani. Rama’s work in illustration, animation, and ceramics combines creativity with purpose. Her art often explores themes of identity and belonging, and she has always preferred to keep her life centered on creativity rather than politics.

While she kept a low profile during the election campaign, she did appear on stage alongside her husband during his victory speech.

Zohran Mamdani became New York City’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest to lead the city in more than a century, and Rama Duwaji now steps into the public eye as the city’s new First Lady.

Their story began in 2021 on the Hinge dating app, not in political circles. At the time, Mamdani had just been elected to the New York State Assembly, and Rama was living in Brooklyn, focused on her art and community. They quickly connected, married in a small civil ceremony earlier this year, and have been together ever since.

During his victory speech, Mamdani looked at her and said, “To my incredible wife, Rama, hayati. There is no one I would rather have by my side in this moment, and in every moment.”

Although she wasn’t directly involved in her husband’s political campaign, some people have called her a background figure, but Mamdani disagrees, saying, “She’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.”

However, she played a key role in shaping her husband’s campaign branding, combining Metrocard yellow, Mets blue, and firehouse red into a bold visual identity featured across posters and digital ads throughout the state.

“She’s been a huge influence on how we present our message,” one campaign staffer said. “Even if she’s not on stage, she’s everywhere.”

Rama, who is ethnically Syrian, was born in Texas. She studied at Virginia Commonwealth University and earned her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. During the pandemic, she and her parents lived in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and she’s now based in Brooklyn, according to People.

Her portfolio includes collaborations with The New Yorker and The Washington Post, as well as international art residencies.

Rama’s work often explores themes of identity, conflict, and resilience, reflecting on humanitarian crises in Gaza and Syria. Her politically aware art has drawn both admiration and criticism, marking her a bold new voice in contemporary art.

Speaking to Yung Mea, she sared her goals, saying, “These days, I focus on making art about my experiences and the things I care about, and the community that forms from conversations about my work — both online and in person — happens organically. I make my work for people who care about the things I care about.”

She continued, “If it happens to engage someone or loop them into a conversation about politics or community they might not have thought of being a part of, it is an added bonus instead of the actual goal of making art,” as per People.

As the couple is preparing for their move to Gracie Mansion, people can’t stop but comment on the first Gen Z generation to be running the Big Apple.

“If Mamdani wins the election, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in a century, Duwaji too would be positioned to make and shape history. She would be the first member of Gen Z to serve as New York City’s first lady,” one person posted on X.

“Now, that’s exciting!” exclaimed another, while a third added: “The new First Lady of NYC, Rama Duwaji, ladies and gentlemen.”

“First-ever Gen Z First Lady of NY!” gushed a fourth.
