It was late afternoon when 16-year-old Jake walked through the front door holding a baby

When 16-year-old Jake rushed into the house with a baby in his arms, his mother froze.

“Oh, Jake, whose baby is that?” she asked after barely collecting herself together.

Confused and scared, Jake explained that he found the little one in the park on his way home. The baby was left on a bench, and there was no one else around. He waited for some time, hoping the baby’s mother would appear from somewhere, but when that didn’t happen, he took the baby home.

Jake’s mom, Susan, got scared. “Jake, someone is probably looking for it at this moment. Let’s alert the police.”

Two officers appeared at their door in no time. Social workers arrived shortly after.

They asked Jake a bunch of questions he didn’t have the answer to. All he knew was that he couldn’t leave a baby, who was around 5 months old, alone in the park.

The social workers praised him for what he did. They took the baby to the hospital where doctors checked his vitals.

Jake asked if he could accompany them, and they agreed. He was worried for that little soul who was fragile and helpless.

Couple of days after the incident, Jake and Susan paid the baby, whom they named Elliot, a visit at the social center. They were told that the police wasn’t able to locate the baby’s mom and that he would be placed in a foster home.

That’s when Jake looked at his mom as though he begged her to take Elliot. However, it was easier said than done. Becoming a foster family wasn’t something that they could just decide on a whim. ‘Let’s talk to Ms. Randall, the social worker. It’s not as simple as it sounds. But if we can do something to help, maybe we should,” Susan said as she rested her arm on her son’s shoulder.

A few days later, Ms. Randall came to their house. She observed the surroundings, jotted down notes, and inquired about their daily life, financial situation, and family habits.

Ms. Randall left with a courteous yet vague smile, telling Jake and Susan that emergency placement was a complex process.

But Jake and Susan didn’t mind the waiting. All they wanted was Elliot to be safe and have someone who loved him and cared for him.

It didn’t take much longer before Susan received a call from the social worker. Seeing the number on her phone screen, she said, “This might be it. Let’s pray Elliot stays with us.”

But it wasn’t the reason why Ms. Randall called them. “Susan, we found Elliot’s mother,” she said.

It turned out his mother was a young woman, only two years older than Jake. She was a single mother who found the care of a baby overwhelming.

However, she realized she made a mistake when she abandoned her baby and wanted him back.

Jake was a bit disappointed Elliot wouldn’t be part of their family, but he was also happy the little one’s mom realized her mistake and did the right thing.

Over time, the social workers set up a support plan for Elliot’s mother, including counseling and housing help. She began rebuilding her life, with supervised visits allowing her and Elliot to reconnect. Jake was also invited to see him.

Eventually, Elliot’s mom found stable housing and asked if Jake could visit occasionally, wanting her son’s rescuer to be part of his life.

Months later, Elliot was thriving and Jake’s life was forever changed by this incredible experience.
