When two people who share children divorce, things can easily turn ugly. Most separations involve lengthy custody battles, and it’s often the children who endure the hardships of their parents’ disagreements.
A man shared the story of how he lost contact with his only son following his separation from his ex-wife and how she did all in her power to keep the child out of his life.
When they made the hard decision of moving separate ways, she got a full custody on their son and the man felt completely hopeless. He was granted visitation rights, but over time, they became increasingly rare because his ex always wound reasons to either delay them or cancel them altogether.
As months passed by, the man’s calls were left unanswered and during those rare occasions when his wife picked up her phone she would tell him that their son was sick, unable to see or speak with him, and a bunch of other excuses.
Sadly, this affected the man’s relationship with his son and their bond was nearly non-existent.
Crushed, he couldn’t stop blaming himself of letting his marriage end in the first place. He couldn’t keep but wonder if there was more that he could do to preserve his relationship, although he knew he did everything to stay in that marriage.
One day, out of the blue, he received a message from his son. “Dad, I think we should meet,” the message read. The man experienced a rollercoaster of emotions. He re-read that message hundreds of times before he could answer it. As he was typing, his trembled. All he could think of was the chance to be close with his son.
They met at a coffee shop. Their conversation was stilted and rather awkward. But the man was aware it would take baby steps to create the bond he always longed for.
His son, David, then said, “Know what, dad? Maybe mom wasn’t fair to you.”
The man felt relieved. Was it that his ex finally admitted to David that his father never really gave up on him? He hoped so.
Over the next couple of months they met regularly, learning about each other and spending quality time together. It was like a dream come true for the father.
As they got close, the father offered to buy David a house. He didn’t have a home on his own, and the man felt like it was the least he could do for his son.
All of a sudden, the two found themselves standing in front of a beautiful house. While the father was overly excited with the place, David mumbled something along the lines that it wasn’t bad, just an old-fashioned house. The father was taken by surprise, but he just chuckled and said it wasn’t really old-fashioned, but classic. “Whatever,” David replied.
The place cost a fortune, but the man was more than happy to buy his son his first home.
As they entered the place, and the man started picturing spending time with his future grandchildren at the spacious kitchen and the stunning garden, David felt unenthusiastic. It seemed like wasn’t an ease, and his dad could feel that.
At one moment, he said he needed to make a phone call and left the place. His father continued exploring the rest of the house, and as he entered one of the rooms, he could hear David speaking on the phone.
A woman’s voice could be heard from the other side of the phone. “It’s probably his girlfriend,” the man thought to himself. But then, David’s words crashed the man’s world.
“Hey, mom, he’s getting the house for me. Then we can easily sell it for more, and you can finally get all those procedures you wanted.”
The man was left in complete shock, but his calm demeanor didn’t let him act immediately. Instead, he waited inside and when David got inside, he told him they needed to talk about the real reason he reached out to him.
Instead of showing he was sorry, David got angry and started yelling at his father, demanding that he proceeded with purchasing the house.
He said his dad owed him and his mother that, that he wasn’t the father he wanted, and that his mom was right about him the whole time.
The man believed his son’s words would hurt him even more than he was hurt already, but not, he somehow felt a weight lifting from his shoulders.
He left the place that represented all his hopes and dreams, and as he was walking and the house was getting smaller and smaller he could hear his son’s voice saying they could still sort things out. But the man knew that wasn’t possible, not now, not ever.
