Family waited 1,103 days for this photo

The 1,103 days this family waited for in order to be complete was worth all the struggle, all the paperwork, and all the uncertainty.

The morning of June 16, 2015 was unlike any other. It was the day the life of five people would change forever – and in the best way possible.

The mother’s heart raced as she was preparing the dresses of Raelynn and Cloe. Dorian’s tie, that he didn’t like wearing but wanted it this time, was also there.

The road to the court seemed like an eternity. Three little children hoping to settle in their forever home and a couple whose dream of becoming parents was finally coming true were eagerly waiting to make it official.

They all recalled the they they first met, everyone in a way they remembered it the best.

What started as a temporary visit turned into days, then months, and years. Birthdays came and school registrations followed. It was then that the couple knew their home wasn’t just a temporary shelter for the three kids that found themselves under their roof, but a forever home.

“It’s official,” the judge said, and little Dorian clutched his mother’s hands with the same intensity he did when he had nightmares of being taken away and placed in yet another foster home.

“Do we get to have a same last name now?” Raelynn asked. The resounding “yes” to that question held the weight of an entire new world.

“So we never have to leave now?” Cloe wondered. “Of course not, honey, you are home,” he mother assured her.

“This family waited 1,103 days for this day and this photo,” the dad added as he asked from the children whom he now got to call his own to say “cheese.”

Years after that day, the family gathered around flipping an old album. And there it was – the photo of the adoption day.

“Mom, do you remember how nervous I was?” Dorian, now a teenage boy, asked. “I remember the waiting, you know?” he said.

“The waiting?” the mom asked, a bit confused. “I though your father and I were the ones waiting for you to be ours.”

But then the mother realized that the waiting was mutual. The children also waited. They waited for a mom and dad who were there to stay.
