A body was discovered in White Oak Bayou on Wednesday morning, adding to a string of recent recoveries from Houston-area bayous. With at least 16 remains found in the same location, concerns about a possible serial killer have grown. The latest body, recovered by a dive team around 9 a.m. on October 8 near Marie Street in Houston, was confirmed by Fox 26 Houston.
The body belonged to a female person. As of now, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has not determined the cause of death, but according to the authorities, no signs of foul-play were present.
The frequent discoveries of bodies disturbed the residents of Houston who fear the reason behind the discoveries could be a serial killer.
However, as speculations spread, authorities are urging the public not to believe the rumors.
Mayor John Whitmire acknowledged that the situation is “alarming” but pushed back against “misinformation” and “wild speculation” spreading on social media. During a press conference on September 23, he stated, “We do not have any evidence that there is a serial killer loose in Houston, Texas.”
“If there was, you would hear it from me first,” he added.
Whitmire went on to say, “So, I’m before you today to let you know that enough is enough of wild speculation. It’s very frustrating to me to be at home, watch the news, or social media, and see people spread what I know to be false.”

The mayor explained that Houston’s 2,500 miles of waterways unfortunately contribute to a number of accidental deaths, particularly among the city’s homeless population. He noted that “friends and acquaintances do not take him to a funeral home” when homeless individuals die from illness.
He emphasized that there is no indication “to suggest that any of these incidents are connected.”
According to Fox 26 Houston, Police Captain Salam Zia, head of the homicide division, confirmed that investigators have found nothing linking the cases. “There is no evidence, and I repeat no evidence, to suggest that any of these incidents are connected,” Diaz said, stressing the need “to rely on verified information and investigations.”
The victims whose bodies have been retrieved so far have been both males and females ranging in age from their twenties to their sixties.
One of the victims was identified as 20-year-old student Jade McKissic, whose body was discovered on September 15, just days after she was reported kidnapped on September 11.
Similar fears have surfaced in Austin after several bodies were found in Lady Bird Lake over the past three years.
