King Charles III’s recent visit to the United States centered on reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the UK and the US, with discussions focusing on shared global priorities rather than formal political negotiations.
Following the visit, however, President Donald Trump has made several claims which prompted an official response from the Palace.
As a head of state, King Charles, as well as the rest of the members of the British royal family, traditionally stay above party politics and remain neutral. This time, however, the king found himself in a rather delicate position after Trump publicly suggested that Charles shared his stance on the Iran crisis, particularly the view that Iran should never obtain nuclear weapons, at the State Dinner hosted at the White House.
“We’re doing a little Middle East work right now… and we’re doing very well,” Trump said over a toast. “We have militarily defeated that particular opponent, and we’re never going to let that opponent ever, Charles agrees with me even more than I do. We’re never going to let that opponent have a nuclear weapon. They know that, and they’ve known it right now, very powerfully,” he continued.

The remarks came after repeated calls from Ed Davey to cancel the visit ahead of the King’s four-day state trip, which began on Monday. Davey had previously raised concerns about the meeting between the monarch and Donald Trump, telling the House of Commons earlier this month that such an engagement risked placing the King in a politically sensitive position.
“President Trump is one of the most unpredictable people we have seen on the world stage and I hope he does not embarrass our monarch,” Davey said.
In response to Trump’s remarks, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “The King is naturally mindful of his Government’s long-standing and well-known position on the prevention of nuclear proliferation.”
Mere days following the visit, Trump once again referenced the monarch in a political context. Following their departure, he announced plans to remove tariffs on Scotch whisky, drawing a subtle connection to the recent royal visit.
“In Honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful Country, I will be removing the Tariffs and Restrictions on Whiskey having to do with Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on Whiskey and Bourbon, two very important Industries within Scotland and Kentucky,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The president continued by claiming that “people have wanted to do this for a long time,” calling the new development a “great Inter-Country Trade.”
“The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking! A wonderful Honor to have them both in the U.S.A.,” Trump concluded.

This post prompted yet another response from the Palace. “The King has been informed of President Trump’s warm gesture and sends his sincere gratitude for a decision that will make an important difference to the British whisky industry and the livelihoods it supports,” a spokesperson said, as per People Magazine.
“His Majesty will be raising a dram to the President’s thoughtfulness and generous hospitality as he departs the US after a most enjoyable State Visit for both Their Majesties in this special anniversary year,” the statement continued.
During a press conference, Trump confirmed he “took all the restrictions off, so Scotland and Kentucky can start dealing again.”
The development comes as the whisky industry faces pressure on both sides of the Atlantic. During his trade policies, Donald Trump introduced a 10% tariff on imports, including Scotch whisky, according to BBC. Leaders in Scotland and across the United Kingdom have since called for the tariff to be lifted, arguing it would benefit both Scottish and American producers, especially given that the United States remains the largest market for Scotch, as reported by Politico. At the same time, Scotland continues to spend hundreds of millions annually importing oak barrels from Kentucky, adding further strain to the industry.
