One letter, one brave daughter: The moment everything changed

My story starts at the time my daughter Hannah was eleven. That day, she came home from school thinking it would be like any other day, except it wasn’t. You see, Hannah followed this same routine. She’s unlock the door, go inside, drop her bag, yell “I’m home.”

That afternoon, however, they key didn’t fit.

Hannah tried again. And again. It was raining, she was getting cold, and she didn’t understand what was happening. At first she thought maybe the lock was stuck. Then she just sat down on the step to wait.

Minutes turned into hours, and before long, she realized she was sitting there in the cold for five hours.

She tried to call me several times, but I didn’t see her calls right away because I was at work. When I finally noticed them and called her back, I knew immediately something was wrong just by the way she said my name. She told me she couldn’t get inside so I drove home as quickly as possible.

When I got there, she was soaked and trembling, but she didn’t cry. At that moment, Hannah looked like the bravest 11-year-old girl.

I put her in the car, wrapped her up, and that’s when my mother came outside. She looked at both of us and said my daughter and I no longer lived in that house.

Knowing my mother, I didn’t even attempt to argue or ask any questions. I knew it would be for the best to just leave, so I did exactly that. However, one thing I couldn’t understand was how she could leave her own granddaughter in the pouring rain for hours.

That night, we stayed in a cheap motel and my sweet girl tried to make it sound fun, like an adventure.

A few days later, my mother called me, and that’s when I knew there was more to the story. It turned out my father left a letter addressed to me in which he explained he was leaving the house to me. His lawyer confirmed that after we read my dad’s will.

My mother had changed the locks without realizing she didn’t actually own the house anymore and now she was asking if we were coming back.

I didn’t know what to do because although that house was now mine, I didn’t want to have anything with my mother.

Eventually, Hannah and I decided to purchase a small apartment, just enough for the two of us, away from my mother and the rest of the family. And honestly, it was the best decision we’ve ever made.
