After 14 years of marriage and unconditional trust, I found out that my husband had been keeping a secret from me, and that shattered my world.
I was about to do the laundry one day when I heard strange buzzing coming out from his gym bag. When I reached inside to see what it was, I discovered he had a hidden phone. And the buzzing, a text message that read, “I can’t wait to see you again tonight. Love you.”
I don’t know how I managed to stay on my feet without fainting from the shock. I was crushed and waited for him to return home before I could confront him, since at the time, that seemed like the best idea.
The moment he entered the house, he saw the phone on the table. “Unlock it,” I said sharply.
He started shaking. “It’s not what you think…Please, just let me…” Chad said.
But I wasn’t in the mood of listening to a bunch of excuses. All I wanted was to know who he was texting with and what he was writing to this other woman.
“Unlock it now, OR WE’RE DONE!” I demanded. However, I was definitely not ready for what he said next.
I always knew that Chad was adopted, and he had a great relationship with his adoptive parents. What’s more, he never really wanted to know why his biological parents left him nor he ever tried finding them. But it turned out that an article about him and his company led his bio mom to him.
She contacted him one day and asked to meet him so that she could share her part of the story.
That message was from her, his long-lost mother.
I was mad. “Why wouldn’t you tell me something so huge?” I asked, feeling like my own husband didn’t trust me enough to share such an important thing with me.
But he explained that when his mother contacted him, he didn’t know how he would feel after meeting her, and he certainly didn’t know if their relationship would last. He simply didn’t want to introduce instability into our lives. He didn’t want our children involved until he was sure she was there to stay.
His feelings were genuine. He didn’t feel guilt, but a mix of fear, hope, and longing.
I was touched and got rid of the anger I felt. But I did want to meet this woman when Chad was ready.
Eventually, both the kids and I met my husband’s biological mother, the one who left him when he was just four. She was very young when she had him and despite her efforts to raise him all by herself, she ended up homeless and didn’t want that kind of life for her son.
Chad forgave her. The truth is, his life has always been a good one, so he didn’t hold any grudges.
It turned out that what seemed like a possible end of my marriage when I found my husband’s hidden phone turned into the start of a new chapter in our lives.
