With threat levels increasing for three US volcanoes, experts warn of potential eruptions

Scientists raise concerns over the increased threat levels for three US volcanoes, Alaska’s Great Sitkin and Mount Spurr, along with Hawaii’s Kilauea.

Following the seismic activity increase, the US Geological Survey (USGS) is keeping Alaska’s Great Sitkin volcano on a watch list, which is the third level on a four-tier warning system, due to it “exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest.” The volcano

This week, lava started erupting from the volcano’s summit and a few small earthquakes were felt in the past day.

Regarding Mount Spurr, which is located 75 miles west of Anchorage, scientists believe there is a 50-50 chance of eruption.

Hawaii’s Kilauea also erupted this week, marking it’s ninth episode since December 23. The latest eruption saw lava shooting 300 feet into the air within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Residential areas haven’t been affected, but still, authorities remain cautious of the the risks of ash clouds and volcanic glass.

There are 169 active volcanoes on the territory of The United States of America.

As per the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), the seismic activity is the result of presence of magma beneath the volcano. This is a sign that an eruption is imminent.

The factors experts monitor in order to predict any changes in the volcanos’ behavior include seismic activity, ground deformation, volcanic gasses, and thermal emissions.

Scientists mapped danger zones and communities around Great Sitkin, Mount Spurr, and Kilauea that are of greatest risk in case of an eruption. In Alaska, Great Sitkin poses a threat to the Aleutian Islands, with ash clouds possibly disrupting flights and covering nearby towns.

Mount Spurr could affect travel, power infrastructure, and air quality at Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, while in Hawaii, Kilauea’s activity in Volcanoes National Park raises concerns about lava flows and hazardous gases forcing evacuations.

Residents should stay informed and alert of any potential eruptions.
