Will & Grace star Debra Messing faces major backlash for brutal message to Zohran Mamdani

Will & Grace star Debra Messing received backlash for sharing Islamophobic memes targeted at New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani, who is the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York, received 50.4 percent of the vote, beating the independent candidate Andrew Cuomo to the office.

On the day of the voting, Messing shared on the social media that she cast her ballot for Cuomo because “we need someone with experience.”

The actress further added, “Our city is too massive, complex, and consequential to have someone 33 years old who has never held a job, and missed 80% of his votes as Councilman.

“Perhaps with more experience. But not now.”

In the days leading up to the elections and Mamdani’s historic win, Messing, who stared in more than 240 episodes of the popular show and became fan favorite, re-posted memes in which she labeled the newly elected mayor a “jihadist.”

The account sharing the original meme, Persian Jewess, shows a voter filling out a fake ballot with two options: “A Democrat. Just a Democrat,” and “An actual communist jihadist. A literal Karl Marx-quoting America-hating jihadist.”

They captioned the post: “This isn’t just a mayoral race. It’s the battle for Democracy itself. New York City, make the right choice. Vote for Cuomo, Vote for NYC. Vote for Democracy,” accompanied by the hashtag #ZohranMamdani, according to Yahoo News.

In fact, this was just one of the many posts she made about Mamdani. In another post, she urged New Yorkers to “vote no to terrorism” and called Mamdani “Osama Bin Mamdani.” Messing also re-shared a Truth Social post by President Donald Trump where he called Mamdani a “JEW HATER.”

Her view of Mamdani appears to be influenced by his pro-Palestinian stance, while she is known for her outspoken support of Israel.

It didn’t take long before people started calling her “racist” and “Islamophobic.”

“I truly hope Debra Messing never gets hired for anything ever again. The way she was calling Zohran a jihadist. The day OF the election. Just a deeply racist person,” one user wrote.

Another added: “Not to poke fun at a woman’s appearance, but why do y’all think Debra Messing looks like that now? Ugly rots from the inside.”

A third person commented: “That was some sort of journey she has posted on her story. I would say meltdown isn’t quite enough of a strong word.”

Someone else shared, “I think Zohran has actually broken her brain.”

Mamdani has spoken out about the growing antisemitism in New York, describing anti-Jewish prejudice as “a real issue in our city.”

He has denied accusations of antisemitism and has openly condemned acts of terrorism, including the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

In his victory speech on Tuesday, Mamdani addressed some of the smears and personal attacks he faced during the campaign.

“The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist,” Mamdani said. “And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.”
