Teen finds fossils on family land: Paleontologists are helping her dig up more!

Lindsey Stallworth is a young lady from Alabama who loves picking up fossils on her farm in Monroe County. In fact, this is something she has done since as long as she remembers.

The thing is that she has never been fully aware of the importance of those fossils until one day she found a bigger one and decided to share the news about her discovery with her math and science teacher Dr. Andrew Gentry.

Dr. Gentry is a paleontologist. When he took a look at Lindsey’s latest found, he was intrigued and wanted to learn more about the fossils she has gathered throughout the years and the place where she found them.

“I immediately recognized one of the fossil shark teeth Lindsey showed me, and I wanted to know more about where she found it,” Dr. Gentry said, according to Fox 8 News.

Lindsey was happy to welcome her teacher on her family’s farm. The two started exploring the place, and it wasn’t long before they stumbled upon and incredible discovery, a large bone from a 34 million-year-old whale skeleton.

This discovery led to a huge project of uncovering the rest of the bones, and after around two months, the pair was able to acquire the animal’s skull.

“If the complete skeleton is there, it could take several years before we have the entire animal back in the lab,” Dr. Gentry explained.

In order to be able to keep discovering the fossils, Lindsey obtained a research fellowship.

She could have never imagined that her hobby would turn into something this serious. “We would go out and pick up shark teeth and fossil shells, but we never knew anyone that could tell us anything about them,” she recalled. “We just thought they were cool.”

Her teacher believes that this fellowship would be of great use for Lindsay’s future.

“The Research Fellows Program allows Lindsey to gain real-world experience in scientific research and even present that research at professional conferences,” he said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a high school student to stand out when applying to college and maybe even discover a new career path.”
