“The loveliest masterpiece of the heart of God is the heart of a mother” – St. Therese of Lisieux.
Mother’s love and sacrifice are beyond comparison. Mothers are guardian angels who would go above and beyond for their children’s well-being and happiness and that is why they are the most special creatures on Earth.
The following story is about one mother who sacrificed her own life in order to save those of her two children.
40-year-old Mariely Chacón and her family went on a boat trip on September 3. Everyone was looking forward to that day which was supposed to be all about fun, laughter, and enjoyment. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned.
As they were traveling from Higuerote, Venezuela, to Tortuga Island in the Caribbean, the boat was hit by a huge wave and broke apart.
Chacón somehow managed to grab her two kids, 6-year-old son Jose David, and 2-year-old daughter Maria Beatriz Camblor Chacon and place them on a lifeboat. The nanny got on the boat as well.
They had already spent a long time floating under the hot sun before someone finally spotted them off the island La Orchila on the evening of September 6.
Search teams started a rescue mission right away but only managed to pick them up on September 7, around 2:10 p.m. Unfortunately, Chacón had been dead for several hours at that point. Her children were still clinging to her body.
The children and the nanny were rushed to the hospital where they were treated for dehydration and burns.
The little ones survived only becausetheir mother breastfed them and drank her own urine in an attempt to stay hydrated. Eventually, she died from organ failure caused by dehydration, according to The Sun.
The rest of the people who were in the boat at the time of the accident, including Chacón’s husband, Remis David Camblor, are still missing. Rescuers have little hope of ever finding them.
Chacón has been dubbed a hero for saving her children from certain death. May she rest in peace.
