The death of Burt Reynolds was met with disbelief and sadness by his family, friends, and fans from all around the globe. He will always be remembered as a prominent figure of Hollywood who entertained millions. Ever since he played the role of Lewis Medlock in Deliverance, he made a breakthrough and his career started moving upwards.
Lots of his celebrity friends were deeply moved by his passing and many of them came with statements about their relation with Burt and how his death made them feel. Among many, the statement of Burt’s longtime on-again-off-again girlfriend caught the eye of the public as one of the most touching. Sally Fields, decided it was the time to speak out her feelings for Reynolds.
Following Burt’s passing, Hollywood A-listers like Arnold Schwarzenegger shared their grief. He wrote:
“Burt Reynolds was one of my heroes. He was a trailblazer. He showed the way to transition from being an athlete to being the highest-paid actor, and he always inspired me. He also had a great sense of humor – check out his Tonight Show clips. My thoughts are with his family.”
Dolly Parton who was his friend and a co-star spoke about his death. The heartbroken country music superstar posted a tribute on her Facebook page, saying:
“Oh, how sad I am today along with Burt‘s millions of fans around the world as we mourn one of our favorite leading men. I know we will always remember his funny laugh, that mischievous sparkle in his eyes, and his quirky sense of humor. You will always be my favorite sheriff. Rest in peace, my little buddy, and I will always love you.
Sylvester Stallone also shared his own statement:
“A sad day, my friend BURT REYNOLDS has passed away. I remember him back in 1979, he always reminded me that I should’ve cast him as Colonel Trautman in FIRST BLOOD, I said that’s impossible because you’re too expensive and too famous, and probably tougher than Rambo! He laughed. He had a great sense of humor and I enjoyed his company so much…
Even though dozens of socialites and celebrities felt the need to share their own remarks on the subject, it was Sally Field’s words that really caught the world’s attention.
The couple started dating back in 1977, while staring in the hit film Smokey and the Bandit, and not long after that they became serious. In an occasion, while being interviewed for Vanity Fair following a rough patch in his life involving addiction and bankruptcy he admitted Sally was the love of his life.
When the couple split in 1982, Burt took the breakup upon himself.
“I miss her terribly. Even now, it’s hard on me. I don’t know why I was so stupid. Men are like that, you know. You find the perfect person, and then you do everything you can to screw it up.”
Burt held onto his regret for more than 40 years – but he never knew Sally felt the same way. It wasn’t until his passing when Sally released a statement saying that he will live on in her heart forever.
“There are times in your life that are so indelible, they never fade away. They stay alive, even forty years later. My years with Burt never leave my mind. He will be in my history and my heart, for as long as I live. Rest, Buddy.”
Burt and Sally’s undying love for one another is proof that our past relationships teach us about ourselves, help us grow, and (if given the chance) can cultivate life-long friendships.
