Over the years, the British Royal Family has gone through a number of scandals. One of them, perhaps the biggest one, was then-prince Charles’ relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles while he was still married to late Princess Diana.
Their affair shocked the country, but not necessarily Lady Di who was aware that her husband had feelings for his former love. Speaking of the troubles in her marriage and the reasons for its failure, Diana told Martin Bashir during a televised interview, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
As expected, Camilla became one of the most hated people in Britain and the public condemned her relationship with Charles, blaming her for wrecking the heir’s marriage.
But thing was certain, that the love between Charles and Camilla was genuine. In fact, Charles was in love with Camilla when he married Diana, but it was already too late for him to call off the wedding.
“Charles was not convinced he was doing the right thing in marrying Diana but there was no way out and, bolstered by the hope that things would be different once they were married, he put a brave face on it,” she wrote, as reported by the Mirror.
Prince William and Prince Harry weren’t happy with their father’s relationship with the “other woman,” but over time, they got along with Camilla, who never really tried to take the role of their mother.
In his book Spare, Harry described meeting Camilla for the first time as “awkward and tense” and added that his brother had “long harbored suspicions about the Other Woman.”
However, Camilla’s first ever meeting with William was said to had gone nicely. At the time, he was attending Eton and was spending the weekend back home. Camilla was aware William was coming to York House in London and asked then-prince Charles to leave before his arrival, but Charles said it was “ridiculous.” Instead, he informed William of Camilla’s presence.
Camilla and William spent around 30 minutes together, and after the successful meeting, she described him as “friendly.”
Today, Camilla is a much loved member of the Firm. People’s affection towards her rose even further after King Charles’ cancer diagnosis when she, alongside William, stepped in and engaged in plenty of royal engagements, representing the Crown at the best of her abilities.
Her support for Charles is immense, and that’s something the public appreciates.
What’s most, she makes sure Charles is highly respected by each member of the Royal Family, including William and Kate, whom she’s very close with.
She’s not described as strict, but she does make sure everyone is well aware of the royal hierarchy. According to author Robert Jobson, Camilla sometimes applies tactics to remind William and Kate not to “disrespect” the King. In his book Catherine, The Princess of Wales: The Biography, he wrote that the Prince and Princess of Wales asked to join King Charles and Queen Camilla’s security convoy from Windsor Castle, but they were late and left Charles and Camilla waiting, which Camilla didn’t like.
“When Charles was kept waiting several minutes for the couple, Camilla insisted they go without them. As William and Catherine emerged, all they could see were the blue flashing lights of the motorbikes disappearing in the distance,” Jobson wrote in Catherine, The Princess of Wales: The Biography.
Despite situations like this, it is apparent that Camilla and William’s relationship is a quality one, reflecting mutual respect and shared commitment to the Crown.
