Teenagers can be quite difficult to deal with. They think they know everything, are eager to try new experiences, and often push boundaries. Being a dad to a teenage daughter, I know all this too well. But recently, my daughter’s behavior changed drastically and I could feel there was more to it than just a typical teenage behavior.
Demi, 13, and her mom, Nora, have always been very close.
In the last couple of weeks, I noticed Demi had been acting strangely. Not only her eyes were sometimes red from I believed was crying, but she tried to ignore my wife.
This was a red flag I wasn’t willing to overlook. However, whenever I asked her about it, she would say it was nothing, she was just dealing with something.
One day, when I went to her school to pick her up, I noticed Demi in the company of another teenage girl who resembled her too much. I have never seen that girl before nor Demi ever mentioned she had a new friend. What startled me was the uncanny resemblance.
While I waited for her to finis her conversation, I noticed an old friends, Todd, whom I haven’t seen in years. I yelled his name, but it looked like he ignored me on purpose. The girl who was talking to my teenage daughter entered Todd’s car so I assumed he was his father.
Demi’s behavior, that girl who resembled her, my friend Todd… things somehow didn’t add up so I spoke to Nora, hoping she could help me understand why our daughter seemed sad and defeated lately.
“Nora, I saw Todd today,” I said. “I believe his daughter and Demi are now friends.”
“Todd!?” Nora said, sound as calm as ever. “I haven’t seen him in ages. I had no idea he had a daughter Demi’s age.”
As we talked, Demi got downstairs, looked at Nora’s eyes, and said, “Mom, don’t pretend you don’t know what’s going on. Dad deserves to know the truth.”
“What truth,” I asked. Puzzled, confused, and feeling as though a storm was coming.
“Demi, stop talking nonsense,” Nora said, trying to prevent Demi from saying anything.
But Demi was determined to share what bothered her.
“Dad,” she said, while she took my hands in hers and started crying. “That man, Todd, I met him a while ago. He’s the father of my friend Sienna.
“He told me once, ‘Dami, you’ve grown up so much, you are exactly like your mom at your age.'”
As the crying became louder and heavier, Demi said, “Dad, he said he was my real father.”
My wold turned upside down when I saw my teenage daughter collapse on the floor.
“Nora, is this true?” I asked, confused and defeated.
But before she could say a word, her face said Demi was telling the truth.
“Billy, I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want you to leave me. I made a mistake years ago, and I regretted it every second of every day,” Nora claimed.
But her words meant nothing to me. She betrayed me in the worst way possible and I couldn’t stay with that woman any longer, not even a second.
The process of divorce was a long and a tiring one. I fought hard for the custody of Demi, and we started our life over, away from Nora who had shattered our trust.
