My neighbors and I have always been very close. Not only greeting each other, but more like babysitting for each other every now and then, having casual dinner when our schedules allow, which isn’t that often, and taking care of the houses when some of us is away.
Well, this time, my neighbors went on a holiday they were invited to unexpectedly so they were in a bit of hurry.
Just as they left, they called me on the phone and asked for a little favor. As always, I said yes, but what they asked from me left me a bit confused.
They wanted me to wrap the handle of their front door in aluminium foil.
Without asking any further questions, I suddenly found myself on their front porch with the foil in my hands. Honestly, I felt a bit ridiculous, wondering what the rest of the neighbors would say of they saw me what I was doing, but I did it anyways.

However, I somehow couldn’t stop thinking about the reason behind it. Maybe it was some form of protection, or maybe it was a superstition. Although part of me thought I was putting to much thought into that, I must say I was really curious.
When they finally returned from their vacation a few days later, I couldn’t help but ask them about the aluminium foil. Of course, I didn’t want to sound too curious.
My neighbor started laughing and explained it was his way of knowing if someone would try to open their door while they were away.

If the foil had been ripped or moved, they’d know someone had tried the door. But since it was untouched, they knew no one had come by.
I laughed and thought to myself, “Well, that’s what the cameras are for,” but since they didn’t have any installed yet, this was their way of protecting their place.
