A respected man within the community, a loving husband, and a devoted father… Ethan was the perfect example of all this, until a suspicious charge from our account said otherwise. While he claimed we couldn’t afford a family vacation due to a “financial strain,” he spent thousands on a spa day with his work wife.
I met Rachel, my husband’s work wife, a couple of times. She was friendly and always smiling, speaking kindly of her husband.
Honestly, I liked her from the moment I saw her. What’s most, I was thankful she helped my husband stay sane during all those late-night shifts.
I always admired their professional partnership, believing everyone should have a person like that in their life, who is there for them through thick and thin when it comes to work.
However, over time, I noticed that they texted often than usual. What’s most, there was this strangely affectionate smile on Ethan’s face whenever Rachel called him; a kind of a smile he hadn’t directed to me in months.
Being in love with him and sharing two kids together, I convinced myself I was imagining things.
But then, Ethan told me we couldn’t afford a family vacation that year due to our poor finances. Honestly, I knew he was working hard, often overtimes, and that he made good money, so his words about a financial strain we were facing didn’t make much sense.
A few days later, while sorting through receipts for budgeting, I stumbled upon a $3,000 charge from ‘Tranquility Luxe Spa.’
“This has to be a mistake,” I thought to myself, determined to get to the bottom of the story behind that horrendously large charge.
Trying to stay calm, I asked Ethan about his plans for the upcoming Saturday. As always, he claimed he needed to work, this time on the important project he had mentioned earlier that week.
“Okay, since you are working, I’ll be taking the kids to the park,” I said, trying to stay collected.
“Fine,” Ethan replied.
When Saturday arrived and Ethan left the house, I took my kids to my mom’s place and headed to the SPA where my husband was supposed to “be working.”
When I entered the lobby, I was met with the strong smell of eucalyptus. The place looked divine. And then I saw them, my husband and his work wife, sitting together in plush white robes. Until I could realize what was going on, she leaned towards him and he kissed her.
My world collapsed. Ethan’s work wife was so much more than a colleague to him.
Scared that they would notice me, I went to the receptionist and asked if they could add a complimentary massage to Ethan and Rachel’s booking as a part of a surprise. The receptionist said, “That’s lovely, I’ll let them know right away.” I reminded her it should be a surprise and she let someone lead my cheating husband and his “friend” to the massage room.
After a while, when I noticed the masseuse stepping down, I entered the massage room, carrying a bucket of ice-cold water I picked up at the lobby and spilled it over Ethan and his alleged work wife.
They screamed and jumped out of the massage tables. When they saw me, Ethan asked me what I was doing there. “I think I should be the one asking that question,” I answered. “I thought we couldn’t afford a family vacation, but apparently, spending $3K for a weekend gateway with this woman wasn’t a big deal.
Rachel tried to convince me there was nothing going on between them, but I said, “Save your explanations for your husband. I’m calling him right away.”
“And you, Ethan, you chose this woman over your wife and children. Don’t even think of returning home. I’m done with you.”
On my way to my mom’s place, I called Rachel’s husband, and then I called my lawyer.
I wasn’t planning on spending even a minute more with that cheating man.
My kids and I still had the vacation we were supposed to take after Christmas. I booked a nice cabin by the sea, and as we collected shells at the beach, I felt a strange sense of relief.
I have always imagined the marriage as a garden one needs to tend to and nurture; remove the weeds and pour love into so it could go strong. But this time, I was planting seeds for my children and myself.
