Rachel and Fred met at the orphanage when they were still very young. They both lost their parents and had no one by their side. Over time, they became each other’s greatest support and soon after, they fell in love and eventually married after finishing high school.
Despite the rough start early in life, they managed to form a beautiful family, welcoming a daughter, Alicia. Fred worked as a handyman, and Rachel was a stay at home mom. Life seemed nice, but then, Fred lost his life, leaving Rachel to take care of their daughter all by herself.
Things weren’t easy and money was tight, but Rachel somehow managed to make ends meet.
One day, she and Alicia visited the flea market to get the girl a backpack – It was old and worn out, but it was pink, Alicia’s favorite color, and it didn’t cost much.
However, what Rachel didn’t know was that the backpack would change her life forever in ways unimaginable.
The day after the purchase, Alicia approached her mom holding a little velvet pouch. “Mom, is this yours?” she asked. “It was inside the backpack.”
Rachel knew it wasn’t hers, but she took it and opened it. Inside, there was an amulet, a photo of a family of three, and some shiny Japanese coins. There was also an address tag that read, “Amanda Turner, 60 Oakland Ave, #216, Colorado.”
Returning the pouch felt like the right thing to do. Without giving it a second thought, Rachel took it in her hand and headed to the address the following day.
It led her to a huge mansion, but there was no one inside. When she asked around, looking for Amanda, one of the neighbors told them she had passed away while traveling home from Japan, and that her husband and daughter moved places. Luckily, after sharing the story about the amulet, the neighbor was kind enough to give Rachel the family’s new address.
It wasn’t far, so Rachel drove there.
When she knocked on the door, a man opened the door. She recognized him from the photo, it was Amanda’s husband.
She told him about the backpack bought at the flea market and how her daughter found the pouch that belonged to his late wife.
The man, John, explained that the pouch was what they had retrieved after Amanda’s tragic passing, saying they had no idea it was inside the backpack they had given away to charity.
John was a nice man, and she and Rachel had a lot in common. They both suffered the loss of their loved ones, and they both had daughters who were around same age. Over time, they became friends, and they eventually fell for one another.
A year later, John proposed. Rachel felt guilty at that moment as she felt like she was betraying her late husband, but she knew that her daughter being raised by two parents was the best for her. So, she said yes.
Never in her wildest dreams did this woman believed a backpack from the flea market would lead to new love and a new begining.
