Singer Mariah Carey faced heartbreak as her mother Patricia, 87, and her sister Alison, 63, died on the same day over the weekend.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” the Always Be My Baby songstress shared with People. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” she added.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” Carey told the magazine. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Carey’s relationship with her mother, who she inherited the singing talent from, had been a rather complex one throughout the years.

In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer opened up about the profound emotional distress that arose from this relationship, describing the anguish and the confusion of what she believed was jealousy that her mother felt. “It’s particularly painful when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age.” She, however, never questioned her mother’s her mother’s efforts to guide her through the path she chose in life; that of music.

Carey told People that she felt blessed she could spend the last days of her mom’s life by her side.

Carey’s relationship with her sister Alison was as complex as that with her mother. According to the singer’s memoir, she made a conscious decision to distance herself from both Alison and their brother Morgan because she believed it was “emotionally and physically safer for me to not have any contact.”

Their relationship turned even more strained when Alison filed a lawsuit against her sister for $1.2 million after the memoir’s release, accusing her of “immense emotional distress.” Based on online court records, Carey never submitted a legal response to the claim.

Carey failed to share any details regarding the loss of her two closest family members, but according to a friend of Alison, her health deteriorated before her sudden passing. Speaking to The Sun, the friend, Dave Baker, revealed she experienced issues with her internal organs and spent the last three weeks of her life receiving hospice care at home.

“Beneath a tough exterior Alison was a highly intelligent, warm, and sensitive person,” Dave told the paper.

“I have known her for nine years and as her friend and in recent months her carer I will miss her greatly. Farewell Alison. May you now find peace, your tortured soul forever free from earthly pain.”

Our thoughts and prayers go to Mariah Carey during this time of grief.
