“It is hard to know how to write this— it seems nuts, given the world, to mourn a pet, but since we have shared Birdie with all of you, it only seems fair to let you know of her passing,” Garner wrote on Instagram.
Out of the blue, Birdie fell ill on Tuesday. They took him to the vet’s but the prognosis was dull. Birdie was at the end of her life.
Birdie brought a lot of joy in the family. She passed away after Garner’s daughter, Violet, came home from college. It seemed like the sweet dog was waiting for everyone in the family to gather around her before she left this world.
During the final moments of her life, Birdie was surrounded by her favorite humans, who petted her soft ears and thanked her for being the best dog.

Birdie wasn’t just a pet, she was a valuable member of the Garner family who was often featured in the videos of the actress’ Instagram series Pretend Cooking Show. Being a therapy dog, Birdie brought comfort to many throughout her happy life.
“She lived a happy dog life and is now in the role she was born to play: angel girl. It’s a gift to love and be loved by such a creature as Birdie the Doggie. 🐾🪽,” Garner shared, adding photos and videos of Birdie.
In one of the videos, Garner and Birdie are sitting on the sofa. While Garner is reading William Steig’s Pete’s a Pizza, Birdie is listening with much attention. They both wear glasses, and that’s beyond cute.
Words of comfort from her fans and friends came pouring in. Tracee Ellis Ross commented, “🐾🐾🐾🐾❤️❤️❤️❤️ these furry beings bring so much goodness.” Actress Jennifer Aniston wrote, “Oh Jen…💔I’m so sorry. Sending so much love.”
Chef Ina Garten was among those who shared their sympathies, “Oh Jennifer, I’m heartbroken for you!!! She was the best buddy and always up for an adventure with all of you. Sending my love to you and the kids. I’m so glad they’re home with you now. Birdie will be eating turkey in heaven.”

Garner found comfort in her family and her community. She and ex-husband Ben Affleck, along with their children, volunteered at the Midnight Mission in Los Angeles.
The family served 2,000 homeless and near-homeless individuals at the non-profit’s annual Thanksgiving brunch. They spent three hours working side by side and sharing warm moments.
