My perfect marriage of sixteen years burst like a bubble one ordinary Friday. It was a day like any other. I was carrying my groceries and just as I was about to enter my home, I heard my husband’s voice. He wasn’t alone, a female voice could be also heard.
It didn’t take long before I figured out it was Mia, my younger half-sister who worked as a life coach and whose jobs lasted shorter than Internet trends.
“She still dresses like she’s 45, doesn’t she?” she asked my husband David and started laughing, obviously speaking of me. “Doesn’t she know any better?”
David replied with a laughter, “Well, I guess she’s just comfortable that way, who knows.” He sounded like he was talking about a random woman he met on the street, not his wife of 16 years and the mother of his three children.
I was furious, but somehow, I managed to stay as calm as possible before entering the room.

The moment I was in, they stood apart. Mia handed David a book and said, “Hey, sis, I stopped by to give your husband a book on how to find himself again. I was just leaving.”
I didn’t say anything. Instead, I just smiled and that was it.
The following morning, I texted her. “Hey,” I wrote. “Could you come over tomorrow evening? I really need your advice… I feel terrible about my body lately, and you’re so into fitness. Maybe you could help me lose some weight?”
Her response was immediate: “Aww, of course! Six okay?”
Mia was at my place exactly at 6, and I did my best to be as polite as possible.

She immediately started sharing her precious tips on how I should get into shape. “Know, sis, you need a detox first, and then I’ll do my magic and help you lose weight,” she said smilingly while she reached to her cup of tea.
And that’s when I had it enough.
“That sounds like a plan. And should I also find myself a married man to keep motivated? Or is that just your personal brand of self-care?” I asked very casually.
Mia was caught by surprise. Her smile disappeared in an instant. “I… I don’t know what you mean,” she said, but I could see her hands trembled.
“You’re glowing, Mia. I figured maybe that’s your secret—wrecking someone’s marriage to stay in shape? Should I try that too?”
Before she could say anything, I opened my lap top and a footage of her kissing with David played on it.

You see, what neither Mia nor David knew was that I had installed a camera in the hallway months earlier when the school called me and told me my son sneaked beer at the school. The camera was to control what my son was doing, not my husband.
When Mia saw the video, she started accusing David on hitting on her, when it was more than obvious that they both enjoyed what they were doing. And just as she tried to accuse me of a bunch of things, I told her there was yet another surprise waiting for her.
It was than that my father, who had Mia later in a second marriage, and Mia’s mom, got out of the room and joined us.
My dad, who always preferred Mia, turned to her and called her selfish. She tried to defend herself, but they had seen the footage before and very aware of Mia’s intentions.

Not long after, David arrived too. He quickly realized why everyone was gathered at our house.
“Honey, it was her, it was your sister who wanted something with me,” he started repeating over and over again. Mia got mad and called him a liar.
And I? I had it enough.
The following day, David moved places and I filed for a divorce. Eventually, I ended up getting the house, the car, and a full custody on the children. And Mia? She moved to another country away from everyone, leaving her entire life behind.
