El Faro was a small hostel on the outskirts of town, and a woman named Mariela worked there for five years. Over the course of her career as a waitress there, she had witnessed it all, from lone travelers, to people seeking shelter, but that night was different, and deep down, she knew that something could be terribly wrong.
In the middle of the night, a man who checked in at the hostel by the name Rubén Cifuentes and a teen girl no older than 14 entered the place. The man said he was the girl’s stepfather. The girl kept her head down, but it wasn’t anything Mariela hadn’t seen before. She knew teenagers could be shy, so she didn’t think much about it.
However, in the days to come, the stepfather and the girl only returned to the hostel for the night and left it every morning. They never used any extra services.

One quiet night, Mariela brought fresh towels upstairs. As she passed room 207, a loud thud and a harsh male voice made her stop. She told herself to ignore it and keep moving.
Later, while shaking out a rug, she noticed the bathroom window in 207 slightly open. She couldn’t help but glance inside, and the sight made her freeze.
The girl was crying on the bed and had bruises all over her arm. Rubén held her wrist in a tight grip, speaking to her in a low, threatening tone. Mariela could see the fear in the girl’s eyes.
She became suspicious and started wondering if Ruben was indeed a stepfather to the teen girl.
Although she knew it wasn’t her job to interfere, she still decided to alert the local police of her suspicions.
In the meantime, Mariela paced up and down the hallway, wondering if she had done the right thing. And then, out of nowhere, she heard loud banging coming from upstairs. She quickly went to check if everything was fine, and knocked on the door of room 207.

“Is everything all right?” she asked Ruben, who tried to slam the door before he said it was none of her business. But Mariela wouldn’t let him. Instead, she looked at the girl, who was obviously scared to death, and said, “Don’t worry, the police are on their way.”
Hearing that, Ruben got angry and grabbed the girl by the arm, trying to escape. But was too late. The police officers were there already. They handcuffed Ruben when he tried to push them and questioned the teen girl, who felt relieved at that point.
She explained that Ruben was indeed her stepfather, but after an argument with her mother, he kidnapped her, and they were going from one hostel to another for weeks.
The girl, Lucia, was taken to a shelter until her mother arrived.
Mariela was relieved her intuition didn’t lie to her and she was right about Ruben. That night, a kind hostel worker saved the young life of the teen girl.
