Her daughter disappeared in a mall restroom — two years later, while walking along a California beach, a stranger’s voice made her freeze

The Man in Sunglasses

Emily froze as the waves, the laughter, and the music faded at Venice Beach. Right in front of her there was a little girl carrying a bucket. Her posture looked way too familiar. Looking at her, Emily whispered, “Lily?”

But just as the girl turned around, the man who was with her yelled, “Sarah! Come here!”

He was a rather tall man with sunglasses on, carrying a towel. The girl ran towards him and just as they were about to leave, Emily approached and said, “Where did you find her? That’s my daughter! Lily Brooks! She’s been missing two years!”

The man’s jaw tightened. “You’re mistaken. This is my daughter, Sarah. You’re scaring her.”

Emily stepped closer, “Sweetheart, it’s me. Mommy.”

The man stood in front of the girl and yelled at Emily, “Back away.”

But Emily wouldn’t let go of the girl. “She’s mine!” she kept saying.

As the man and the girl tried to leave, Emily followed them, and soon after, the police got involved.

Waiting for the Truth

Daniel Cooper, the man, insisted the girl was his daughter and showed his ID. When they asked the girl about her name, she said it was Sarah.

Not long after, both Emily and the man were taken to the police station. They were both questioned about the incident. And after what seemed like an eternity, one of the detectives turned to Emily and said, “There’s a strong chance she’s your daughter.”

Emily was overwhelmed. Did she really find her daughter after her sudden disappearance? At that moment, everything seemed surreal, and she could barely sleep that night.

“It’s Her”

After a couple of days, the DNA results came back. “It’s her,” the detective said. Lily Brooks. Emily burst in tears. She could hardly control her emotions.

Daniel Cooper, the man who claimed Lily was his daughter, said he believed the adoption of Lily was legal, but it was obvious he was well aware adoptions don’t happen just like that. He claimed a woman had given Lily to him, but he wouldn’t say who that woman was.

After the authorities investigated the case further, he was arrested and faced charges for unlawful custody.

Finding Their Way Back

Emily couldn’t believe her daughter, who disappeared from a mall restroom two years prior, was with her again. However, the much-anticipated reunion didn’t resemble the one this desperate mother had always imagined.

Lily was too young to remember she was taken away from her mother, and Emily needed to be careful not to scare her. She needed to regain her trust and her love.

During the first weeks of finding each other again, Emily’s visits of Lily were supervised by a social services worker who helped both of them navigate the emotional reunion.

But then, everything fell into place. Emily and Lily could finally be a family again.
