The struggle to get pregnant drained me, both physically and emotionally. The financial burdens from the numerous treatments, the long stays at the hospital… But I convinced myself it would all be worthy one day. All I ever wanted was to become a mother and give Ronald, my husband, a child that would call him “daddy.”
Sadly, nothing worked, but just as I lost hope, I noticed two lines on the pregnancy test. My heart started racing. Could this be true, I kept wondering.
Until I was sure I was carrying a child, I decided to keep it a secret, even from my husband.
And then, a couple of days later, I went to my doctor’s. I experienced a swirl of emotions, from excitement to fear and nervous anticipation.
“Can you hear the heartbeat?” my gynecologist asked me. “Carol, you are pregnant, congratulations.”
That moment was pure happiness. All I could think of was Ronald’s face when I delivered the news.
What I never expected, however, was to see my husband at the hospital, right there and then – with another woman who was pregnant as well.
From feeling like the happiest woman on Earth, to being overwhelmed with anger and disappointment.
Ronald seemed happy. He was laughing with her and held her hand helping her walk, as she was well into her pregnancy. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The woman was very young, probably in her early twenties, and way younger than me.
As I struggled to breath, I called an uber and decided to follow them.
They got inside Ronald’s car and headed to a neighborhood I’d never been to before.
Ronald helped her get out of the car and the two entered a house.
I was determined to confront him right there and then, so I knocked on the door. It was him who answered it.
“Carol, what are you doing here?” he asked, shocked by my unexpected presence. But I didn’t say anything, I just entered inside, eager to learn what was going on.
The young woman turned to me while holding her belly and said in a calm voice. “Carol, it’s nice to finally meet you.”
“Meet me? So you knew Ronald was married? I asked, still shocked by this encounter.
“Yes, I knew. By the way, I’m Anna, Ronald’s daughter.”
“Ronald’s what!?”
Those words made my heart sink. I had no idea Ronald had a child already. What’s most, she was pregnant.

Ronald turned to me and said he was sorry for not telling me about Anna.
It turned out that he and her mom dated when they were very young, but things didn’t turn out for the best and they split. He knew Anna existed, but her mom wouldn’t let him see her, and eventually, they lost contact and he had no idea where she was.
However, Anna’s mom died of cancer, and now that she was pregnant, she felt the need to reconnect with her father.
“Carol, I didn’t know how to tell you. I was waiting for the right time, I guess,” Ronald said.
I was confused and didn’t know what to think.
“You know, when I saw my husband at the hospital with a pregnant woman, my world collapsed. I could never assume he had a daughter,” I said.
Ronald then turned to me and asked what I was doing at the hospital.
“I’m pregnant, too, Ronald,” I whispered, not expecting to deliver the news that way.
He hugged me and started crying tears of joy.
I needed some time to think about everything, but I realized that Ronald wasn’t a bad man. He just wanted to be there for his long-lost daughter without hurting my feelings.
As of Anna, she wanted to be part of our life. A big family was something I’ve always dreamed of, and now my dream has finally come true.
